Foliage research
Flora, but not fauna as of yet.
I am missing some pictures on this blog, so this post is probably more for my own sake more than anything else.
I’ll keep it short; for my bachelor project last year I ended up having to do foliage for our game. I suck at foliage, so luckily Andras will be responsible for that part this time around. I did, however, do a shit ton of research regarding Norwegian flora. So here are some collages I made as a result.

What in the world?
The general world concept:
The setting is Norway between year 1200 - 1800. Yeah, this is a huge amount of time, but we’ll narrow it down as we see fit.
So one really cool thing about Scandinavia is that they, like many other old nations, have their own folklore and myths. I grew up with tales from Asbjørnsen and Moe and these are subjects I am high-key obsessed with still. The insane stuff people used to believe back in the day is something that will forever fascinate me. They really let their creative juices flow in order to conceptualize what they could not explain or understand at the time.
Medieval Norway was poor, uneducated, religious and superstitious - but rich in culture and oddly charming. “Bonderomantikk” and “nasjonalromantikk” are terms that are still present in modern Norwegian culture and literature, and they describe this odd charm medieval Norway had. The world we want to build is grim, somewhat primitive and beautiful. The term “trolsk” comes to mind here.
The creatures of this world will be elaborated upon in another post when I can be bothered, but some mythological beings that exist in the world are:
- Hulder
- Nøkken
- Troll
- Draug
- Fossegrim
- Ormer (dragonkin)
- Hekser (witches, but more related to Norwegian paganism)
We will, however, start small and expand when and if it feels natural. The key beings our game will be about are the Hulder folk. What is being written about now isn’t necessarily content that will be in the game - this is more for the sake of world building.
- Victoria
Edit: Sorry some of the sources are in Norwegian. We’ll have to dedicate a post for explaining terminology and such at some point.

Hi.
Welcome to our blog. It’s about a game.
We are two game students fresh out of the university-oven, located in Norway. I am Victoria (currently writing) and the other one’s Andras. We’ve both got a bachelor in animation and digital art; specializing as 3D generalists. We are very passionate about games.
For the next year we are both taking some time off from deadlines and steep learning curves to just focus on saving up money and creating our portfolios. To keep our sleep deprived brains from shriveling up we figured it would be nice to work a project on the side. The intention is to use this blog as a log and hub for our game’s development progress.
There is no telling where this idea will lead, to be honest. The project might flop - which is okay because then we’ll at least have content for our portfolios. However, it would be really fucking cool if this turned into something more.
