The Time Capsule of Vintage Fashion! I blog with the intent to look at how fashion, over the course of history in America, has shaped the lives, beliefs, behaviors and esteem of women in our country. I focus particularly on cultures that have been overlooked by the American mainstream fashion and beauty industry.

THE LOOK: Marsha Hunt, a dazzling model, singer and writer, she struck oil with her wild and free afro and her gentle smile in the late 1960's. Marsha has worked with music greats in the music industry for almost 50 years, but its her bold and sassy 70's power fro and bright smiling eyes that makes all of us admire her look!
Marsha is also a survivor of breast cancer. I honor her today by giving all of you a look at some of her very rare photos. Also included is a look at 2 of her magazine layouts from the 1970s.

These are Ultra Sheen ads as they ran in Ebony Magazine in 1970. Although "Afro Sheen" was a major Black Hair Care Product in the 1970s, "Ultra Sheen" its sister product, ran separate advertisements. There was a diverse style accepted in the Black Community in the early 1970s, as it was understood that although many Black Americans were breaking away from wearing their hair straight, there were still a group of African Americans that wore their hair permed. Ultra Sheen was marketed to women who still permed their hair, but wanted the "Afro" look.

The very famous "Afro Sheen" ads as featured in the 1970 publications of Ebony Magazine.
Afro Sheen began to hit big in August 1970. For Black Americans, this product symbolized a company that cared about their hair care needs on a personal level. After Afro Sheen premiered, you began to see other companies making "Blow Out Kits" for the Afro or as it was called in 1970 "The Natural". Companies like Duke, Raveen and Posner begin to follow suit.
Afro Sheen made Black Americans feel proud and accepted in the advertisement realm!

The Look: Judy Pace in some of her very best classic looks from the 60's & 70s. This California Girl was the Premiere Chocolate Beauty of the TV Screen. Known for her flirtatious smile and gorgeous skin, she's been in the film industry since 1963. Pace appeared in Sanford & Son, Good Times, What's Happening, That's My Mama and many other shows and movies.
Judy Pace is an extraordinary Black Beauty Icon, for her dazzling class and stunning, natural beauty that crossed cultural barriers in the promotion of Black women as sex symbols in the television industry!
