Millions of Water Bottles Meant for Hurricane Maria Relief in Puerto Rico May Have Been Left on Tarmac
The numbers have gotten even more devastating when it comes to the federal government’s failed response to Hurricane Maria, as a photo suggesting that FEMA may have left millions of water bottles meant for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico on an airport tarmac went viral on Twitter on Tuesday.
By some reports, Hurricane Maria's death toll in Puerto Rico was over 5,740, almost 90 times higher than the government's official count of 64. Thousands still live without power in Puerto Rico nearly a year after the storm.
On Twitter Wednesday morning, though, President Trump said he did “an unappreciated great job” providing U.S. citizens with hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
With Hurricane Florence forecasted to make landfall in the Carolinas as soon as Thursday, reports also came in last night that the Trump administration had transferred $10 million from FEMA to pay for ICE detention centers.
The story behind how the above water bottle photos came to be is still a bit sketchy. The General Services Administration Administrator for Puerto Rico, Ottmar Chávez, told CBS News that his agency had claimed excess water bottles for delivery from FEMA back in May, but only became aware of the bottles on Tuesday, and he now wants to return them to the agency following complaints about the water's taste and smell. Abdiel Santana, who works with the Puerto Rico state police agency FURA, says he posted the photos to Facebook on Tuesday, having first seen the bottles as far back as October or November of last year.
Nearly a full year after Hurricane Maria, the federal government, FEMA and President Trump have all yet to properly address just how bad the devastation was in Puerto Rico, and how their failure to respond contributed to the suffering.
And while Homeland Security officials claim a “false agenda” on reports of FEMA disaster relief funding being transferred to ICE, ahead of what's sure to be another devastating storm in Hurricane Florence, it's absurd that this trade-off has to happen at all, or if we're being serious, that ICE as an agency even exists in the first place.
It’s clear that FEMA and other federal officials, whose first priority should be the safety of Americans about to face natural disasters, haven’t learned much from their catastrophic last hurricane season, and all we can do is rage on until someone pays attention.

Anitta Signs Worldwide Management Deal With Brandon Silverstein's S10 Entertainment
Brazilian superstar Anitta has signed with Brandon Silverstein’s S10 Entertainment for worldwide management, joining a roster that includes Normani and Jacob Banks.
“Anitta is a global superstar who continues to push the envelope musically,” said Silverstein in a statement. “At S10, we’re excited to continue to both build her international platform and extend her influence throughout North America. It’s an honor to join her family and kick off this chapter with her."
Silverstein added a "special thanks" to Anitta’s brother, Renan Machado, and attorney, Ed Shapiro.
In the past two years, Anitta has crossed over from the Brazilian marketplace to global stardom, with hits both in Spanish and English. The move is rare for a Brazilian artist, but Anitta has managed to connect not only through her music and strategic collaborations with the likes of J Balvin, DJ Snake and Major Lazer, but also through huge following on social media.
"After five years taking care of my own career, I’ve decided to pass the baton,” Anitta wrote on Instagram to her more than 40 million followers in a lengthy Portuguese-language post typical of her openness with her fans.
“After searching for a long time, I found the American version of my head. Truth is, the mix of my head and and my brother’s was always the perfect balance for our crazy ideas. Brandon comes to our Anitta family, like everyone else has, learning humbly about us, with a lot of respect for everything we’ve built and eager to win.”
Anitta was previously managed by Shots Studio outside Brazil and has parted ways amicably with company heads John and Sam Shahidi, who were among those posting congrats on Instagram.
She’s currently working on a new album and continues to tour internationally.  Her docuseries, Vai Anitta, can be seen on Netflix.

11 Forgotten Heroes From History's Worst Comics Publisher
After that event, Danny leapt headfirst into everything. Sometimes he hit a dick and things went his way, and other times he hit something harder and lost a little bit more spinal fluid. Overnight, this comic went from a waste of everyone's time to the life-and-death struggles of a man who could only dive full-power at dicks and hope for the best. That's a story I always want to hear the end of, and the exact technique John Travolta uses to decide on movie projects.
RIP "Dopey" Danny Day 1939-1940 "Thank you for the membo soggy, hi, many yes of these head wounds are from penises, good night."
The Headless Horseman was a crime-fighting cowboy who wore an ascot tied to no neck and screamed from an empty space with no mouth. What dark witchcraft called on him? How does he see or hear? Does he eat by dropping animals into his collar or soaking his entire shirt in soup? Well, when a stunning twist reveals he is actually a girl with a six-inch torso and toddler hands on the end of octopus shoulders, those are going to seem like silly questions.

From what I've learned from comic books, punching was the "happy holidays" of the 1940s. It was very common, it worked as a fine hello but better as a goodbye, and only uniquely lame pussies had any issue with it. In the '40s, you could beat a man half to death and tell the police, "Wait a couple days 'til the swelling goes down on this mook's face and see if he's yer guy. Also, yer welcome." If a magical wish transported you to a Golden Age comic book right n- PUNCH. That's how regularly it happens. So it's very strange that Copper Slugg's entire thing was how he punched people too often.
Slugg only appeared in one eight-page story, and in that time, he punched five men and one woman, with three -- possibly four -- of these incidences being total misunderstandings. And make no mistake, they were pissed about it. In the tens of thousands of Golden Age comic book stories, Copper Slugg was the only guy who ever got in trouble for punching because the punching itself was wrong. No matter how you feel about violence, that's inspiring. He punched so many people that the laws of his universe had to rewrite themselves around him.

Japan earthquake death toll 35 as thousands continue to sleep in shelters and in the airport
Sixteen-thousand fill up shelters in Japan on the THIRD DAY after killer earthquake as homes lay destroyed, 20,000 have no power and 30,000 no water supply while death toll rises to 35 and airport is hit with massive backlog of flights
The government will release emergency funds to deliver food, water and fuel for hospital power generators
Thousands of people are still sleeping in shelters following Thursday's 6.6-magnitude earthquake
Rescue workers with bulldozers and sniffer dogs are scouring through solidified mud to find more survivors

About 16,000 people remain in emergency shelters in northern Japan three days after they were forced to flee their homes on Hokkaido island when the region was rocked by a killer 6.6-magnitude earthquake.
Passengers have been forced to sleep on the terminal floor at the prefecture's main airport after Thursday's quake caused chaos as debris fell inside buildings, and flights were suspended after a power outage.
As the death toll climbed to 35, and tens of thousands of rescue workers continue searching through rubble, collapsed buildings and solid mud for survivors, 31,000 households still have no water, and 20,000 homes are without power.
Dozens of aftershocks have hit the area since the earthquake struck the Hokkaido prefecture three days ago –which saw a northern hamlet buried by landslides – including one with a magnitude of 5.4, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.
School gymnasiums have helped provide emergency shelter for residents who cannot as yet return to their homes because they have been destroyed, are unsafe, or they have no power or water.
Rescuers search for missing people at the site of a landslide triggered by Thursday's earthquake in Atsuma, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Japanese rescue workers and troops are searching for the missing for a third straight day in a northern hamlet buried by landslides from the powerful earthquake
Thousands of people have spent several nights in shelters following the quake - the latest in a string of natural disasters to batter the country
Local residents find shelter at a school gymnasium in Abira, Hokkaido, northern Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a strong earthquake jolted Japan's northern island of Hokkaido early on September 6, causing large landslides, a blackout over the entire region, which affected almost 3 million households

Earthquake evacuees are seen at the gymnasium of an elementary school, acting as an evacuation shelter, during a power blackout after an earthquake hit the area in Sapporo, Hokkaido, northern Japan
Stranded passengers queue up in lines to wait for their flights at New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Hokkaido, northern Japan. The regional airport was beginning to resume operations after hundreds of flights had been cancelled, stranding thousands of travellers, due to Thursday's power outage and light quake damage
The Hokkaido government had said earlier today that 30 people are dead or presumed dead and nine remain missing – up from yesterday's death toll of 18. But in a further update, public broadcaster NHK said that 35 are dead.
All but three of the victims are residents of the town of Atsuma, where landslides destoyed and buried houses at the foot of steep forested hills that overlook rice fields.
After more than a day of digging there were no reports of survivors being pulled from their crushed homes in the outskirts of the town of Atsuma, not far from the quake's epicenter. Five people still remain unaccounted for in the town.
Tourists from South Korea and China have finally been able to head home from New Chitose Airport, outside of Sapporo. About 1,600 people spent the previous night at the airport (above), according to Japanese media reports. Domestic flights resumed yesterday

About 600 people sustained minor injuries, according to the local government of the northern Hokkaido island.
Rescue workers with bulldozers and sniffer dogs have been scrabbling through solidified mud to find more survivors.
'We never had landslides here,' said Akira Matsushita who lost his brother in Atsuma, a seaside community of about 4,600 that advertises itself as a destination for surfing and a great lifestyle.
'I couldn't believe until I saw it with my own eyes,' he told TV Asahi. 'When I saw it, I knew no one could survive.'
Most residents in Atsuma have sought meals, water and shelter at the local social services office.
'There are no supplies, so the shop simply cannot function. It's tough,' said Yasuhiro Kurosaki, a young father whose wife was cradling their infant son outside the small supermarket owned by his father.
Shelves inside the darkened shop were bare aside from a few boxes of potato chips.
A boy carries a pack of water that he received at a shelter in Atsuma, Hokkaido, northern Japan Saturday, September 8, three days after a powerful earthquake knocked out power to the entire island of 5.4 million people, swamped parts of a neighbourhood in the main city of Sapporo in deep mud and triggered destructive landslides
Rescue teams continue searching through a large landslide site in the Yoshino district of Atsuma, after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake killed 30 people
Further inland, unharvested rice fields stretched before a long expanse of hillside that had collapsed all at once, bringing earth and timber down on homes that had been tucked along the edge of the mountain.
Some 40,000 rescue workers, including Self-Defense Forces drafted in specially, are continuing the search for survivors with the aid of bulldozers, sniffer dogs and 75 helicopters, according to the top government spokesman.
'They're doing their best around the clock,' Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

All three million households on Hokkaido island lost power when Thursday's quake damaged a thermal plant supplying electricity to the region, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said power was mostly restored.
'Thanks to hard work to boost power supply throughout the night, the number of households without power has declined to 20,000,' Abe told a cabinet meeting to discuss the quake.
The return of electricity came as a huge relief for residents. About half of Hokkaido got power back on Friday, and all but 20,000 households had power this morning.
'It was a relief that it was back yesterday evening, but it feels it took time,' said 66-year-old Sapporo resident Tatsuo Kimura, adding that the blackout was a reminder 'of how important electric power is in our life.'
The Prime Minister, who will meet quake survivors in Hokkaido on Sunday, said that the government would release emergency funds to deliver food, water and fuel needed for power generators at hospitals.

The earthquake also collapsed a handful of houses and walls in the main regional city of Sapporo but considering the strength of the quake, the death toll was relatively light, with the majority of victims coming from the landslide in Atsuma.
International flights at the main airport in the regional capital of Sapporo, the New Chitose Airport, resumed operations on Saturday, while bullet trains began service the day before.
Tourists from South Korea and China were able to head home from New Chitose Airport, outside of Sapporo. About 1,600 people spent the previous night at the airport, according to Japanese media reports.
Japan’s transport ministry said that about 90 international flights were scheduled to depart from and arrive at New Chitose Airport, which is the main gateway to Japan’s quake-hit Hokkaido prefecture, reports xinhuanet.
Hokkaido has become a popular destination for tourists from other parts of Asia.
Some parts of Sapporo were severely damaged, with houses left tilting and roads crumbled or sunken. A mudslide left several cars half buried, and the ground subsided in some areas, leaving drainpipes and manhole covers protruding by more than a meter (yard) in some places.
'This is shocking. I was always walking on this street and I had never imagined this road could collapse in such a way,' said resident Noriyuki Sumi. 'But, if you think positively, imagine if I was walking here when this took place. I might have lost my life. So, I try to think I am lucky in this unfortunate situation.'
Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it would suspend nearly all its production in Japan on Monday. Toyota makes transmissions and other parts in Hokkaido and also has suppliers on what is the northernmost of Japan's four main islands.
Rescue operations continued throughout Friday night, as personnel shone bright lights on to mud-caked areas to find survivors

Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko said it would take at least a week to fully restore power to all communities due to damage at a thermal power plant at Tomato-Atsuma that supplies half of Hokkaido's electricity.
'We're trying to do it faster, but it will likely take a week,' Seko said. He urged residents to conserve power.
The quake was the latest in a string of natural disasters to batter the country.
Western parts of the country are still recovering from the most powerful typhoon to strike Japan in a quarter of a century, which claimed 11 lives and shut down the main regional airport.
Japan sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where many of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded.

90210 Returning to Fox With Six-Episode Event Series
Six cast members of the original 90210 series will be reuniting for a six-episode event series on Fox. Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling will return for the series, which is set to air in the summer of 2019.
According to Fox, “90210 comes with a big twist: Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 Trailer: Is Coulson Alive?
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 may be a long way off, but ABC has already started the promotional campaign for show's big return.
It shows Melinda May struggling to process the fact that the love of her life is dead and buried.
With "Agent Coulson Is Dead" splashing across the screen, it seemed to confirm the reports that Clark Gregg would only be part of the series off-screen following Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5.
While the bulk of the teaser shows us Mac doing his best to move on from the big death, there's a game-changing twist in the final few moments that could give a glimmer of hope to fans of Coulson.
Also teased in the trailer:
- A new band of villains whose mission seems to be to show the world that they have superpowers. Yeah, that's not going to go down well.
- The search for Fitz takes an emotional impact on Simmons as she tries desperately to find her man before he makes it all the way to his final destination ... the future.
The trailer comes just months after the series scored an early renewal for Season 7. Many thought the move to the summer would be the death knell for the series, but ABC and Marvel managed to work out a deal to keep the show on the air.
All told, have a look at the full trailer below, and join me in the comments with your thoughts on it.

Started on TikTok, Now We're Here: A Look Back at the Meme-Tastic Beginning of Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road'
With Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a 17th week and breaking the all-time record, some may be wondering: How did we get here?
The answer is simple: All it took was a meme.
Lil Nas X first uploaded the tune to the short-form video app TikTok in February, sparking a meme in which creators drink "Yee Yee Juice" and change into western garb in time for the song's drop. It has since become the background music for just about anything, from backflips to baking.
TikTok U.S. General Manager Vanessa Pappas congratulated Lil Nas X in a press release Monday morning (July 29), saying: "It’s been incredible to watch 'Old Town Road' grow from its start on TikTok in February -- as the backbone of an accessible and engaging meme that generated millions of creations and billions of views -- to a record-breaking smash hit that has all walks of life listening on repeat."
Below, watch some of the best TikToks featuring Lil Nas X's record-breaking song.

Jimmy Kimmel Poked Some Fun At Himself In The Wake Of The Successful Host-Free Oscars
ABC
After months as a source of drama and mockery, the 2019 Oscars turned out pretty well. Sure, there were, shall we say, issues with certain winners, but it moved briskly and it even saw an uptick in ratings. One reason for the former, and maybe even the latter: No host. Indeed, the man who served as emcee for the previous two ceremonies, one Jimmy Kimmel, had to do his late night show the night after the Oscars, on the same network and across the street from where the Dolby Theater. And he couldn’t not make some self-deprecating jokes.
Deadline got the scoop before the episode in question hit the airwaves, reporting that the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! cracked that he watched the Oscars in “full hair and makeup – just in case someone called at the last second and said, ‘Hey, listen, we needed ya.’ But they didn’t.”
Kimmel hosted the 2017 and 2018 Oscars; the first was the one that ended infamously, with presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announcing the wrong Best Picture winner. He acknowledged that perhaps last night’s broadcast suggests he and people like him might be superfluous.
“There was no official host this year, and the show was 36 minutes shorter than last year. Which people like, I guess,” Kimmel said. He joked that maybe they should keep trimming “until it is exactly one minute long. And the ratings will be huge.”

Michael Jackson Accusers Get a Standing Ovation at Sundance
It’s not uncommon for audiences at the Sundance Film Festival to give standing ovations, but the ceremonial act took on a solemn air as two men who accuse Michael Jackson of molesting them as boys walked onstage following the festival’s only screening of Leaving Neverland, a documentary about their stories.
Wade Robson, who says Jackson abused him from ages 7 to 14, and James Safechuck came forward as adults with their abuse allegations after Jackson’s death in 2009.
The four-hour film, which will air in two parts on Britain’s Channel 4 and HBO this spring, is a sprawling account of how their lives intersected with Jackson’s at the height of his fame in the '80s and early '90s, and then later as adults when the trauma of what happened in their youth started to emerge in serious ways.
In addition to accounts from Robson and Safechuck themselves, the film also interviews family members including the boys’ mothers, wives and Robson’s brother and sister. Jackson’s voice is heard in the film, through voicemails he left for Robson and an “interview” Safechuck did with Jackson aboard his private plane, and the film also shows some of the many faxes he sent to Robson.
“We can’t change what happened to us. And we can’t do anything about Michael,” Robson said in a Q&A with the audience. But he said he hopes it makes other survivors feel less isolated and raises awareness for anyone who is responsible for children.
Safechuck added that they weren’t paid to participate in the documentary, nor did they expect to get anything from it.
The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly, which Robson and Safechuck have done in multiple ways.
Leaving Neverland has been denounced by Jackson’s estate and fans since the project was announced earlier this month.
Jackson was acquitted of molestation charges in 2005 in a case involving another young man. Robson testified at that trial, saying he had slept in Jackson’s room many times, but that Jackson had never molested him. Safechuck made similar statements to investigators as a boy. Then in 2013 Robson filed a lawsuit that said stress and trauma had forced him to face the truth that he was sexually abused by Jackson. Safechuck filed a similar lawsuit the following year. Both were dismissed for technical reasons and a judge did not evaluate the merits of the allegations.
Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed said he was entering new territory exploring an entertainment figure, instead of his usual subjects like terrorism and crime.
He told the men, who had talked to so many lawyers over the years, to just speak to him like he was an ordinary person on the street and not to worry about contradictions. He interviewed Robson for three days and Safechuck for two days before deciding that he also wanted to speak to their mothers.
“I was just blown away,” Reed said. “I knew we had something really big.”
Safechuck and Robson say that being together through the process has been incredible.
“It’s all we’ve wanted for the past six years to be able to talk, communicate,” Robson said. It’s just been beautiful.”
Safechuck added: “It was a long time coming, just connecting to someone who has been through this. It’s amazing.”
The film has stirred up controversy since it was announced just a few weeks ago. The Jackson estate condemned it for rehashing “discredited allegations.” Before the screening, there were reports that there would be massive demonstrations outside and Park City deployed extra police outside the Egyptian Theater, which is in the middle of the festival’s busiest street. But only a handful of people showed up Friday holding posters with the word “innocent” displayed over Jackson’s mouth.
An audience member brought up the reality that there are many Jackson fans who don’t believe them, and asked if they had a message for them.
“I don’t feel like there’s anything I need to say to them, except that I understand that it’s really hard to believe,” Robson said. “Because in a way, not that long ago, I was in the same position they were. Even though it happened to me, I still couldn’t believe. I still couldn’t believe that what Michael did to me was a bad thing. We can only accept and understand something when we’re ready.”

Rally for Reproductive Rights on Saturday: UPDATE
The misogynists at the state Capitol are already busy introducing anti-abortion bills and the members of the Arkansas Medical Board are punishing abortion clinics with a law meant to undermine their revenues. But women are busy, too: the annual Rally for Reproductive Justice will be held on the Capitol steps at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 19. Keynote speaker will be Pamela Merritt, the co-founder of Reproaction, and others on why these bills are hurting, not helping, women and their families.
The event, sponsored by the Arkansas Coalition for Reproductive Justice, works for "the right to HAVE children, the right to NOT HAVE children and the right to PARENT the children we have in SAFE and HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS," it explains on the Facebook page announcing the rally.
Sen. Trent Garner — whose other important proposed legislation includes making the shotgun the state gun and who wants to see people carrying their guns openly and everywhere — has sponsored two abortion bills: SB2, which would make it illegal for a woman to choose abortion if her fetus tests positive for Down Syndrome; and SB3, to require physicians to make extensive reports on "abortion complications" to the state Department of Health.
Meanwhile, over at the state Medical Board, three clinics that provide abortion were cited for billing patients who come seeking an abortion. A 2017 law prohibited clinics from collecting payment from during the 48-hour "reflection period" after a patient's first visit. Board member Robbie Thomas-Knight quit the board after its vote saying the clinics broke the law, saying the decision was made without a hearing and was motivated by abortion animus. Bettina Brownstein, lawyer for the clinics, said the state law was in violation of both state and federal constitutions and would cost clinics thousands of dollars. (Which was the point of the law, of course.)
UPDATE: I asked Meg Mirivel, the spokeswoman for the Department of Health, what complications from medical procedures were required to be reported to the agency. The answer: None. Here's what she wrote:
Outbreaks of illness that are healthcare-acquired are reportable. ADH Healthcare Facility Services requires facilities to report any incident of a death while a person is in restraints. Hospitals and Ambulatory Surgery Centers are required to keep records of complications, but they are not required to report them. During inspections, these logs are reviewed and analyzed for any trends which would trigger a more extensive investigation as well as evaluating whether the facility is including anything they have identified in their quality assurance program.
Garner's bill requires physicians who've performed an abortion to submit a report to the Department of Health, within three days. Source: https://www.arktimes.com/ArkansasBlog/archives/2019/01/17/rally-for-reproductive-rights-on-saturday

Maya Rudolph is Wondrous in Amazon's Sort-of Comedy, Forever
by Allison Shoemaker
September 12, 2018   |
Print Page
I’m not sure what to say about “Forever.” The new Prime series from creators Matt Hubbard (“30 Rock,” “Parks and Recreation”) and Alan Yang (“Master of None,” “The Good Place”) cares far more about character and theme than plot, yet to earnestly address the former two is to immediately spoil the latter. Beyond the realm of the visual—and luckily, there’s plenty to say about that—you can’t discuss its influences without potentially yanking a thread from its carefully woven fabric. Its stars (and in particular, a wondrous Maya Rudolph) do fine work, but any in-depth analysis would surely give away the game. And most frustratingly, I’ve already tipped a hand by even addressing the fact that there’s much about this series that can’t be said.
Yet worst of all, the need to play this kind of shell game with “Forever” sets it up as one thing, when really it’s quite another. It’s not as though the can’t-address elements of this series aren’t important, and often well-handled. But in the end, all of that stuff, cool though it may be, is just the peanut butter in which Yang, Hubbard, Rudolph, and company hide the pill. This is a series about marriage, and love, and satisfaction. It’s about the lies we tell ourselves and others. It’s about knowing yourself and your partner and your own desires, and finding the guts to admit to yourself the things you know. It’s about how life is short and decisions can have consequences that last forever, but also how quickly a change can be made. It’s complicated and silly and simple and strange. It’s a comedy, sort of.
June (Rudolph) is a woman sitting alone at a bar when Oscar (Fred Armisen) approaches. But as he does, some other guy swoops in, greeted with a familiar kiss. The camera pans left, and a montage (seen, abridged, in a trailer) shows us the years that follow: courtship, proposal, fights, milestones, putting a banana in a dishwasher, the works. Then they go to a lakehouse, catch a fish, and sit down to feast. Then the lakehouse again, the fish, the meal. And again, and again, June’s resignation becoming more and more evident with each repetition. At long last—efficient, graceful minutes in the series, years in the relationship—she proposes a change. A ski trip. A cold mountainside instead of a brisk lakeside. It’s a little variation, and it changes their lives forever.
That’s an inadequate summary, for all the reasons listed above and because “Forever” is far more concerned with pulling us into June’s life, and letting us roll around in the intricacies and contradictions found therein, than it ever is in story. “Forever” shares a few writers with Michael Schur’s “The Good Place,” and both shows demonstrate a similar outsize ambition when it comes to theme, density, and complexity. Both reveal their depths as they’re savored. Both look at big ideas and concepts through the lens of people with fears and hang-ups a lot like ours. But while “The Good Place” concerns itself with matters moral, ethical, and philosophical, however, “Forever” dwells in the realm of the personal. The question is not “what do we owe to each other?,” but “how can you love someone and be frustrated, even bored by them?” It’s not “what is goodness?” It’s “what is a marriage, what do we take from it, and what do we owe in return?”
Of course, there’s a lot more to it, and a lot comes out in Rudolph’s very stillness. She’s funny, no surprise there, but also sells entire character arcs with wordless stares or a slightly stuff shrug. The heavier things get, the simpler her work becomes. It’s a marvel, one of her best performances to date, and even when “Forever” seems to wander into its own cul-de-sac, she remains endlessly gripping. Hers isn’t the only terrific performance, either. As Kase, a woman who disrupts June and Oscar’s already disrupted life, Catherine Keener gives a performance that’s predictably wry, surprising, and excellent; as the punk-ass skateboarder who becomes an unexpected friend, Noah Robbins also does solid work. And in a surprising standalone outing, Hong Chau (“Downsizing”) and Jason Mitchell (“Mudbound”) unleash a dazzlingly restrained pas des deux that I wanted to watch again the moment that it ended.
Tumblr media
You’ll notice that Armisen doesn’t appear in the list above. That’s not because he’s bad—he’s perhaps as good here as he’s ever been. But he’s not always able to match Rudolph’s emotional richness, and that’s in part because he’s given a great deal less to do. When Oscar’s story spikes, as it infrequently does, we sometimes see Armisen approach Rudolph’s level, but he often plays Oscar as a collection of traits that set June on edge, rather than a person whose attempts to create a wonderful life for his partner somehow end up making everything just a little bit unsatisfying. By season’s end, that imbalance is mostly corrected, but for the majority of these first eight episodes, Oscar is what he is to June, and not a fully fledged character on his own.
Some of that may be because Oscar fits in so perfectly with the world that Hubbard, Yang, and company have created. He definitely belongs, she somehow doesn’t, and so our eyes go to her. That tension is reflected in the work of series cinematographer Mark Schwartzbard, whose frames often show Oscar as both at home and invading—a particular shot of his face, appearing reflected in June’s eye, is a total stunner that also managed to simultaneously elicit both happiness and groans in this viewer. His muted light suits the work of production designer Amy Williams and costume designer Kirston Leigh Mann, who similarly show us a place that’s perfect, but not quite right.
As for the rest, you’ll have to see it first. You may love what you see, and yet it may still also frustrate, even bore you. So it is with relationships, and with TV. But regardless, you’ll have to find out on your own. I wouldn’t want to spoil anything.

Maren Morris on Her Multiple Grammy Nominations and 'The Middle' Success: 'This Is the Best News to End 2018 On'
“The Middle,” Maren Morris’ genre-busting hit collaboration with EDM stars Zedd and Grey, was practically born during the 2018 Grammys: The country singer recorded her vocals two weeks before the awards show, shot the music video the next week and then saw the clip air during a commercial break at the ceremony the week after that. Next year at the 2019 Grammys, however, Morris and her collaborators might have more to celebrate than just the song’s anniversary. On Friday (Dec. 7), "The Middle" was nominated for three Grammys: record of the year, song of the year and best pop duo/group performance.
“This is the best news to end 2018 on,” says Morris, who is up for three country awards herself for her songs “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” and the Vince Gill duet “Dear Hate.” “I’ve had a really amazing year paired with ‘The Middle.’ I went on tour with Niall Horan, and the crowds in South America were singing ‘The Middle’ back so loud, and that’s when I got it: That song had officially gone around the world, and a song of my own had never quite had that extent of a reach. I’m sure Zedd would say the same thing: We’re an unlikely pair, but because it fit the song so well, it was a great marriage of genres. The Grammys are known for these unlikely Grammy Moment collaborations, so to have a song that really represented what the Grammys are about is really full circle.”
Morris is not a first-time nominee -- she was up for four awards at the 2017 Grammys, including best new artist, thanks to the strength of her 2016 debut album, Hero. Yet she says the Recording Academy’s recognition is just as meaningful this time around. “This is the best news to end 2018 on,” Morris says. “To have nominations across the board is astounding to me, because I haven’t put an album out in the past two years,” Morris says. “It’s crazy to not be in an album cycle and have this amazing validation.”
The singer learned about the good news while watching a CBS live stream of the nominations on her phone moments before a flight. “They announced it right before we took off,” she recalls. “Thank God the plane had Wi-Fi so I could text my husband and my manager and my parents and everyone I knew. It feels like my phone hasn’t gone off all day.”
Now, Morris will play her final show of 2018 tonight -- “I’m doing a show with Brothers Osborne, who were also nominated, so I’ll feel like we’ll have a little celebration” -- and then head back to Nashville to treat herself with some downtime. “I have no plans of leaving my house,” she says with a laugh. “My husband put a bottle of Dom in the fridge, and we’re going to drink it in the morning and just chill out and not see anyone for the rest of the weekend. I remember the first year I was nominated, we did the same thing, so it’s kind of a tradition now.”

Inspiring Bravery: This Heroic Civilian Ran Right Up To A Burning Building
Buckle up, because we’ve got a tale of heart-pounding bravery that’s guaranteed to inspire you: This heroic civilian ran right up to a burning building.
Wow. This is what true courage looks like!
When Stephen Brewster noticed a three-story residential building engulfed in flame during his morning jog, he ignored the terror so many of us would feel in that situation and fearlessly charged right up outside the burning home. All it took was seeing the blazing roof and hearing panicked shouts from inside for Brewster to sprint over and stop 15 feet in front of the building’s door, and his incredible bravery kept him rooted firmly in place no matter how large the fire continued to grow. As smoke poured out the windows and sparks shot into the sky, Brewster’s courage never wavered—he stood directly in front of the raging inferno despite having no professional firefighting experience whatsoever, only pure determination and iron-willed grit.
You just can’t fake that kind of moxie!
“I had been totally paralyzed just watching the fire, and right as I was starting to worry that nobody was coming to help, out of nowhere this amazing guy comes tearing down the street and runs right up to the curb in front of the building,” said Jenna Daley, a neighbor who was lucky enough to witness Brewster’s heroic feat firsthand. For all eight nail-biting minutes it took for the fire department to show up, Brewster stood his ground out front with awe-inspiring mettle, bravely putting himself only yards away from the fire’s blistering heat and choking fumes. Even after the town’s fire trucks finally arrived on the scene, Brewster decided to see his job through to the end, and continued standing in front of the house until the last of the flames were finally extinguished.
Bravo, Mr. Brewster! Your dauntless courage in running right up to a blazing house fire and standing immediately outside is a shining example to us all.
