one thing i find so interesting about connorkyle is how they’re both mixed men who were abandoned by their fathers, raised by single mothers, and were bullied and outcasted in school, yet their responses to these circumstances and the impact they had on their lives are so different. connor’s hesitance regarding intimacy vs the way kyle is desperate for it, connor feeling like an afterthought to sandra vs kyle feeling suffocated by maura’s overbearing nature, connor growing up with his mixed mother and not knowing his white father vs kyle growing up with his white mother and not knowing his brown father. they have so many similarities that allow them to understand each others lives in a way that no one else can, but they have enough differences where they can still learn from each other, too.

there's something about kyle. he's the closest i’ve ever gotten to genuinely having a woobie. some older comic character will be like ‘psht, kyle, what a wimpy brat’ and something primal in me is like LEAVE HIM ALONE! HE TRIES SO HARD! grown woman watching a man in a bat costume give him grief yelling at the comic pages HE EARNED THE RING BY CHANCE AND LOST EVERYTHING BECAUSE OF IT BUT HE STILL EMBODIES WILLPOWER.
#me yelling at my dad after he said kyle is the worst lantern#you don't know him like i do#he's doing his best#and he's wonderful

the thing is i truly dont trust or even many days particularly want dc comics to write kyle as a brown mexican character. and im using my words carefully because people typically call him hispanic or latino. i am avoiding those words on purpose. his mother taught him irish and was in one origin associated with the troubles. he would not give himself to such an identity when he was raised to understand the importance of avoiding colonial assimilation.
i dont want abuelita mijo familia chanclazo latinidad is about having fun and being yourself. he is a character who is, before he was even canonized as having a brown mexican father, associated with anti colonial language preservation struggles. a strong reception of his race would not remove him from the context and content of his storytelling to sprinkle in aesthetic elements. it should be woven into the struggles that define his character. he has already been hunted by the government. he already had a bond with another mixed character with a fatherhood legacy. he already was taught to control himself and avoid collateral by a man of color. his father had to pretend to be an abuser to free maura from government attention and they had no problem believing he was dangerous. in another easily synergetic telling his disappearance led to their impoverishment.
ive seen discourse about whether he would “identify as latino” but major force and the desolation arc and others demonstrate that he is Other no matter what. even in space his body is used to make a statement. the domineering leader of a fascist military order tears him open to take his power. the strength of older comics was how the interpersonal conflicts translate to the cosmic conflicts. hal stridently supports a creed that stifles others; john is held to an unfairly high standard of observation; guy is stripped of his body autonomy. a “mamas chimichangas line” treats kyles identities as so easily reduced. amanda waller mentions he is the only lantern whose identity they don't know; his brown father is still on the run from the government.

You can survive almost anything through the right combination of:
Bitching and moaning
Hater-ology
Doing a goofy little bit about it
Having a buddy say "that's so fucked up" at intermittent points (you can also be your own buddy)
Destroying the cursed amulet you carry everywhere, why do you even have that thing
