Construction output in Great Britain: April 2025
Tumblr media
Short-term measures of output by the construction industry in April 2025.
1.Main points
Monthly construction output is estimated to have grown by 0.9% in April 2025; this is the third consecutive period of positive growth, following an increase of 0.5% in March 2025.
The increase in monthly output in April 2025 came from increases in both new work and repair and maintenance, which grew by 1.4% and 0.3%, respectively.
At the sector level, six out of the nine sectors grew in April 2025; the main contributors to the monthly increase were infrastructure new work and private housing repair and maintenance, which rose by 2.0% and 1.5%, respectively.
Total construction output is estimated to have grown by 0.5% in the three months to April 2025; new work increased by 0.9%, and repair and maintenance grew by 0.1%.

3.Glossary
Construction output estimates
Construction output estimates are monthly estimates of the amount of output chargeable to customers for building and civil engineering work done in the relevant period, excluding Value Added Tax (VAT) and payments to subcontractors.
Seasonally adjusted estimates
Seasonally adjusted estimates are derived by estimating and removing calendar effects (for example, leap years such as 2024) and seasonal effects (for example, decreased activity at Christmas because of site shutdowns) from the non-seasonally adjusted estimates.
Value estimates
The value estimates reflect the total value of work that businesses have completed over a reference month.
Volume estimates
The volume estimates are calculated by taking the value estimates and adjusting to remove the impact of price changes.Back to table of contents
4.Data sources and quality
Quality and methodology
More quality and methodology information (QMI) is available in:
our Construction output QMI
our Construction output price indices (OPIs) QMI
our New orders in construction QMI
Reasons for revisions to construction output in this release
This release contains no revisions to previously published data and is consistent with the National Accounts Revisions Policy.
For further information on the revisions profile, see our Output in the construction industry revisions triangle (one-month growth) datasetand our Output in the construction industry revisions triangle (three-month growth) dataset.
Pausing of Producer Prices publications
As we announced in our statement on 21 March 2025, during work to improve the systems used to create the Producer Price Index (PPI) and the Services Producer Price Indices (SPPI), our quality assurance identified a problem with the chain-linking methods used to calculate the PPI and SPPI indices. For more information, please see our Producer prices publications update, released on 11 April 2025.
As these detailed price data are used within our calculations, along with gross domestic product (GDP), this may lead to impacts on the level of some sectors, with revisions to estimates likely in 2022 and 2023. At an aggregate level for GDP, these revisions should be offsetting to an extent, while taken alongside regular data deliveries. Early indications suggest that there will not be a notable change in the recent economic trends seen in these data, but we will update users once more information becomes available. We do not plan any changes to the publication timetable for output in the construction industry, however, we are pausing updates to the construction output price indices (OPIs) series until further notice. We will continue to use PPI, SPPI and the resulting Output Price indices (OPIs) estimates compiled under the current methodology in these publications until updated methods and data are available. We will provide further information on the likely effects as soon as is practicable. An error has been identified in the consumer price inflation measures for April 2025, as detailed in our Vehicle Excise Duty impact on Consumer Price Inflation statement. This error has no impact on monthly construction or GDP estimates for April 2025.
Seasonal adjustment
Our monthly construction estimates are seasonally adjusted. Seasonal adjustment is the process of removing the variations associated with the time of year, or the arrangement of the calendar, from a data time series.
Construction estimates, as for many data time series, are difficult to analyse using raw data because seasonal effects dominate short-term movements. Identifying and removing the seasonal component leaves the trend and irregular components.
The ONS uses the X-13-ARIMA-SEATS approach to seasonal adjustment. Seasonal adjustment parameters are monitored closely and regularly reviewed. For more information, please see our seasonal adjustment methodology page.
In our monthly estimates, seasonal adjustment is applied at the sector level and the seasonally adjusted series are aggregated to create estimates by total output. As part of our quality assurance approach, residual seasonality checks are regularly completed by our time series analysis team on both the directly seasonally adjusted series and the indirectly derived aggregate time series.
Sub-national and sub-sector construction output
Data on new orders supplied by Barbour ABI are used to model the breakdown of the overall output figures for Great Britain into the lower level and regional data. This is shown in Tables 1 and 2 of our Output in the construction Industry: sub-national and sub-sector dataset. More detail is available in our Quality assurance of administrative data used in construction statistics methodology.
Bias adjustment
Typically, since the move to monthly gross domestic product (GDP) estimates, an adjustment to address any bias in survey responses for construction output is applied to the early construction output monthly estimates. We show this in our Improvements to construction statistics: Addressing the bias in early estimates of construction output, June 2018 article.
Response rates for April 2025 showed improvement compared with levels in recent years since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The survey turnover response rate for April 2025 was 71.6%. This follows a response rate of 72.7% in March and 79.7% in February. We have continued not to apply a bias adjustment since May 2020 while we review this approach. More information on our response rates is available in our Output in the construction industry dataset.

Patent Approved for Karta’s Hyper-Realistic Flooring Technology
Karta Floors, a pioneer in innovative flooring solutions, is thrilled to announce the official approval of its patent for a revolutionary ‘method of creating virtual texture’ by the Intellectual Property Office, a landmark achievement unveiled at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.
This significant milestone underscores Karta’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and material possibilities.
The announcement coincided with Karta’s highly successful display of its Recycled Leather Series at Clerkenwell Green. The collection garnered widespread acclaim, with visitors commending Karta’s exceptional sustainability credentials, remarkable durability, and effortless installation. Overwhelmingly, designers and architects highlighted how authentically the floors “look like real wood” – a naturalistic quality that is a direct result of Karta’s newly patented process.
This proprietary method allows Karta to create an unparalleled illusion of depth and realism on two-dimensional substrates. By meticulously manipulating light and shadow captured from precisely crafted master surfaces, where natural timber characteristics are carefully augmented to enhance their visual impact, Karta replicates the nuanced characteristics of natural timber, including subtle grain variations and ‘perfect imperfections’, ensuring a level of authenticity previously unattainable in engineered surfaces.
Unlike conventional LVT products often marred by discernible repeating patterns and textures – a common giveaway – Karta’s method delivers an unparalleled naturalistic variation.
Robert Walsh, founder of Karta, commented, “The new patent is a shining example of our commitment to Research and Development, and to generating a creative space where technological innovation, a deep understanding of woodworking traditions and a profound appreciation of nature can combine.”
Karta Floors continues to redefine the possibilities for sustainable, high-performance flooring that meets the aesthetic demands of contemporary interior design and architecture.

Embracing Earthy Pastels and Patterns
Earthy tones continue to be a timeless trend in interior design, showing no signs of fading – especially as pastel variations gain popularity. With their enduring charm and calming presence, these shades complement a wide range of styles, offering a versatile foundation for creating warm, lived-in spaces.
From muted terracotta and sage green to dusty teal and soft neutrals, tiles in these hues create the perfect retreat from the busyness of everyday life. Offering a rich variety of styles, patterns and finishes, Tile of Spain’s manufacturers make it easy to infuse any space with this soothing, grounded palette.
With their warm undertones, these soft pastels bring a sense of comfort, individuality and a deeper connection to nature with their organic feel. Ideal for walls, splashbacks, floors and even outdoor areas like patios or courtyards, tiles in these palettes strike a perfect balance between style and serenity.
Homeowners and designers are increasingly moving away from stark minimalism and cold surfaces, embracing instead the calm of nature-inspired palettes. Soft and natural, pastels promote a sense of harmony, while patterns in these hues, whether geometric or botanical, add depth without overwhelming the space.
El Molino’s Memory tiles showcase these colours through intricate patterns, capturing the timeless Mediterranean charm with a patchwork design and rustic textures. Each tile celebrates imperfection and artisanal beauty, with sage green earthy tones that evoke warmth and authenticity – bringing character and soul to spaces.
As both homeowners and designers continue to seek peaceful interiors, earthy pastels are proving that less truly can be more, transforming spaces into grounded, expressive sanctuaries.
Representing 125 ceramic tile manufacturers across Spain, Tile of Spain promotes the incredible quality and values worldwide of the Spanish tile industry. Versatile, durable and authentic, Spanish tiles offer unique characteristics and unlimited aesthetic possibilities whilst acting as a global benchmark for their high degree of innovation.

Reducing noise to support stress-free environments: the benefits of acoustic flooring
By Dave Ford, Specifications Manager – North, Altro
Reducing sound is more than just a ‘nice to have’ – it promotes the health of staff and service users. Noise levels from people and noise pollution from equipment and devices reverberate over sound-reflecting hard surfaces, extend over distances and linger; consequently, they can have a serious impact on the wellbeing of everyone.
A positive sound environment occurs naturally outdoors; our ears are tuned to the natural environment, and the sky absorbs noise. We need to create the same indoors, absorbing or diffusing noise to help support a stress-free environment. Designs that have good acoustics, along with natural light and ventilation, help create a positive, therapeutic atmosphere.
Acoustic flooring generally refers to flooring that helps provide sound insulation, thus dampening the effects of sound from within the room, be it airborne noise or impact noise. Acoustic flooring is different from soundproof underlay or flooring, which is designed to reduce sound coming through the floor from adjoining areas.
With a range of vinyl flooring that has sound-dampening properties, you can find Altro products that will serve your needs in more ways than one. With different levels of sound reduction, you can tailor your project to its exact specifications.
Where can acoustic floors be used to best effect? Here are some examples:
Commercial kitchens – Whether in a restaurant, hotel, hospital, university, school or care home, they have one thing in common: they are really noisy! Trolleys clatter over the floor bearing loads of wobbling crockery; plates are loaded and unloaded in dishwashers; food processors blitz away and chefs need to make themselves heard above all this reverberating noise. Acoustic and impact sound reducing floors can help reduce noise significantly to enhance the wellbeing of all those who work here.
decoration and furniture in cafe
Hotels – Nothing disturbs a good night’s sleep more than the sound of other guests moving about in the room above yours or wheeling their suitcase past your door at midnight. Acoustic flooring will help reduce sound transmission between storeys and adjacent rooms and increase sound absorption along corridors to keep your guests coming back for some peace and quiet.
Modern luxury hotel suite interior
Care homes – Improve the chances of residents sleeping well and not disturbing each other by incorporating sound reducing flooring into your corridors and bedrooms. They are also beneficial in visitor lounges, to enhance that sense of privacy.
Education – Libraries, student accommodation, study areas, drama studios, music rooms, dining rooms and playrooms; all spaces that either demand quiet up front or would benefit from minimising noise transmission to other areas. The right floor can reduce impact sound transmission not just into adjoining rooms but also to other storeys.
Housing – Reduce tenant complaints about noisy neighbours next door, above or below them, by installing appropriate sound absorbing floors.
Hospitals – Peace and quiet aid recovery and protect privacy, so surfaces which contribute to them are essential across many areas of a hospital, including: intensive care or wards where resting and sleep are vital to patient recuperation; corridors where the sounds from trolleys and wheelchairs can be a constant source of distress; consultation rooms in which private conversations should not be overheard.
Offices – Office equipment, people on the move and conversations can all make noise levels so loud as to make offices a stressful working environment – not good when you spend the best part of your day there. Create a more positive working environment with less noise pollution in open plan spaces, communal areas and meeting rooms.
Retail – No-one like a noisy shop. Retail therapy by its very nature demands quiet for it to count as therapy and create the right atmosphere; thereby providing not only a more peaceful environment for staff, but also one in which shoppers will linger.
Most manufacturers have acoustic flooring options. Consider how each area is used and weigh-up sound reduction properties alongside those such as slip-resistance, durability, cleanability and aesthetics – you should be able to find options that deliver what you need.
At Altro, our 19dB vinyl acoustic floor, Altro Serenade, contributes to the impact sound reduction of noise in buildings by reducing impact sound transmission, increasing sound absorption and reducing sound reflection. Where noise reduction is needed to reduce in-room sound and transmission of noise you can also consider Altro Illustra adhesive-free, Altro Cantata adhesive-free, Altro Wood Comfort and Altro Wood adhesive-free floors which offer 14dB, Altro Ensemble and Altro Orchestra and Altro Orchestra Custom which offer 15dB (and comfort underfoot while maintaining the highest Commercial classification of use).
If this isn’t enough, don’t forget that you can combine the floor of your choice with impact sound reduction underlays. For example, Altro Acoustic Underlay 1101 and Altro Everlay B offer sound reductions of 18dB and 20dB respectively.

Recofloor smashes annual targets as it surpasses 2.5 million m2 of vinyl flooring recycled
Tumblr media
Vinyl takeback scheme celebrates increased impact as more contractors request collections than ever before
Recofloor – the UK’s leading vinyl takeback scheme – has announced the collection of 533 tonnes of vinyl flooring in 2024, besting its annual target by 6% and reaching the equivalent of 2,550,000 m2 of vinyl flooring recycled throughout the lifetime of the scheme.
More than 7,650 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring have been collected and recycled through Recofloor since the scheme was founded by Altro and Polyflor in 2009.  This has produced 8,974 tonnes of carbon savings – equivalent to taking 2,342 cars off the road for a year (this carbon savings estimate is based on displacing concrete in traffic management products, the main application for the recycled flooring).
Recofloor is widely regarded as a great example of circularity in the flooring sector: through the sustainable collection service for commercial waste vinyl flooring, material is recycled back into new flooring, as well as traffic management products.
“A highlight this year was seeing a greater number of scheme participants, with 531 requests for Recofloor collections – this is up 19% compared to 2023,” explains Carla Eslava, Scheme Manager at Recofloor. “This has been helped by the increasing deployment of Recofloor on more major project sites and a rise in engagement with main contractors.”
Of the 533 tonnes collected through Recofloor in 2024, almost half (47%) came from flooring contractors and their projects. Distribution drop-off points accounted for 38% of materials collected, with a remaining 15% coming from industry partners.
“It has been great to see more main contractors promoting the scheme as a result of our awareness generation activities,” continues Carla. “Having main contractors engaged opens the door for when the flooring contractor is on site, making deploying Recofloor on a project a lot easier.”
While 2024 had been a resounding success for the takeback scheme, Recofloor is keen to ensure that it continues to expand its reach and increase the amount of material it diverts from landfill.
“In 2025, we will focus on further collaboration with the industry about take-back schemes, look to increase awareness of vinyl flooring recycling and engage with scheme participants to ensure we are collecting higher quality material” says Carla.

It not only showcases Karta’s commitment to sustainability but also introduces innovative design elements that offer unique, sustainable flooring solutions at an affordable price point. Karta not only provides a budget-friendly alternative to traditional wood flooring, but is also captivating customers interested in LVT flooring. Utilising waste materials to create new, long-lasting products really is the future of product manufacturing and we look forward to continuing exploring these methods at Karta.”

Schluter®-DITRA-PS the ideal preparation for tiling
Tumblr media
Recognising that creating a luxury bathroom represents a major investment in any property, Schlüter®-Systems has enhanced its unrivalled range of system solutions, designed to deliver perfection for tile, stone and a range of other floor coverings, by introducing a product which will not only ensure longevity, but also save time, money and effort during the installation.
Schluter®-DITRA-PS is the latest innovation within the market leading Schluter®-DITRA family of products, whose game-changing uncoupling mat allows for independent movement between the floor covering and substrate, preventing cracks. DITRA-PS joins the Peel & Stick family of products, which makes installations simple, clean and quick.
Simple to install, DITRA-PS has a pressure sensitive release film on the back of the membrane. The membrane can be repositioned as often as required provided no pressure has been applied, to ensure the product is perfectly placed. Once pressure has been applied, the mat is adhered to the substrate and is immediately ready for tiling.
The DITRA-PS membrane is the ideal answer to dealing with troublesome substrates such as P5 green chipboard, which is not suitable for use with traditional tile adhesive and does not offer the same level of protection against tiles cracking, debonding or moisture. DITRA Peel & Stick allows installers to easily stick down the membrane onto even the trickiest of substrates, with no tile adhesive required and no mess involved.
Schluter®-DITRA-PS has already been embraced by not just specialist tilers, but bathroom fitters and general builders due to the speed it can be installed and because of the way it eliminates the need for multiple different skilled tradespeople. The product builds on the success of the original DITRA uncoupling mat, and is just as reliable in terms of the uncoupling, load transfer and vapour pressure equalisation properties.
The truly comprehensive Schluter®-DITRA  range also encompasses DITRA-HEAT and DITRA-HEAT-DUO, both of which enable the installation of electric heating cables for rapid and efficient surface heating thanks to the their advance design.  DITRA-HEAT is not just an ideal substrate for ceramic tiles and natural stone, butalso an innovative system for warming wall areas, while heat output can be controlled via Alexa, as well as the manufacturer’s App, or conventional controls. The membrane is available in mats or rolls.
