Holidays, COVID-19, and Addiction Recovery: Now What?
First and foremost, we at Florida Center for Recovery would like to wish you and your loved ones a Safe, Healthy, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Though the spirit of sharing and togetherness is an integral part of Thanksgiving, this year our holiday might need to look quite different, and that’s OK. Planning for small gatherings, simply gathering with family from the same household, and avoiding traveling are just a few actions that we can take to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
For those in early recovery choosing sobriety is a daily decision. One that requires personal awareness, thoughtful preparation, and a strong support system. With the current restrictions in place surrounding COVID-19, recovering individuals are finding themselves feeling alone as connections with their support system have diminished or stopped altogether. Getting creative and becoming extra vigilant about prioritizing recovery can help those struggling to maintain sobriety through these difficult times.
If you are celebrating alone and would like to connect with family and friends during this Thanksgiving Holiday, Zoom is lifting its 40-minute limit for all meetings globally from midnight ET on Nov. 26 through 6 a.m. ET on Nov. 27. In addition, take advantage of online recovery resources. Many 12-step and other recovery groups are offering free virtual meetings that you can access from your smartphone or home computer. including... Addiction is, as the National Institute on Drug Abuse explains, a complicated disease that affects a person physically, mentally, and emotionally. Because of this, employees seeking addiction treatment are protected from job loss under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). For individuals suffering from addiction, those 12 weeks of medical leave can be the beginning of a journey toward recovery, and that in turn can yield many benefits for themselves and their employer. Want to learn more about FMLA and find out if you qualify? If you or a loved one is struggling with opioid addiction, Florida Center for Recovery continues on delivering its life-saving face-to-face addiction treatment therapies following CDC guidelines to protect our employees and clients.
