she/they, queer, from the pacific northwest. I do art in most of my free time and sometimes post it here! paint, embroidery/stitching, drawing, coloring, photography, upcycle crafts.... whatever interests my ADHD brain enough to start, and sometimes even to finish. for stuff I've made: "#mine own art" Otherwise this'll prob be interspersed with art/upcycle/diy-related reblogs! Feel free to send an Ask about anything I've made, I'm happy to share more details! may occasionally interact with main blog, tradedsymmetry

I took Modern Art History this quarter!! this was our third and final creative project, creating a Warhol-esque self portrait of ourselves. if I had been able to start earlier, I might've chosen a different selfie, or at least printed a less-dark version. but I'm happy with most of the results overall and it was really fun!!
she recommended that we print almost twice as many copies as we ultimately needed (she wanted at least 3 versions, but we could submit up to 6. I printed 8) pretty sure I submitted the first four here?? but potentially in a different order. I think the background on the last one got a little too busy to really be Warhol-esque so I didn't include it. and then the very last one is the Warhol example just cause I still had it on my phone.

I took Modern Art History this quarter!! this was our second creative project, to recreate a photo using divisionism/pointillism (on a 5in x 7in piece of cardstock). I read a pretty long scholarly paper on Seurat's process, all the experiments he did with color. it was really fucking cool. I'd kinda always wanted to do something with pointillism before but the commitment required was way too much for just a personal project, so I was glad to be forced to commit and follow through!! my instructor said "wonderful job with this! you did quite well with this." :3

if its okay to ask, how and where do you get your materials for your collages? any tips?
for the most part i like to use Junk & Crap more than purchased materials because to me personally i think it has more character. some of my favorites being:
envelopes, especially from junk mail that has interesting designs
wrappers & packaging
receipts
used scraps of paper. notes, shopping lists, etc
magazines, newspapers, etc
tags, labels, stickers that one might otherwise consider garbage
old shitty coloring books
used tissue paper
books that are badly damaged & would otherwise be thrown out
something i tend to save rather than use but would also be good: cards, letters, notes
some of the things i do buy (or have been gifted):
washi tapes, my favorites being from [here]
sometimes when i join my mom on her trips to joanns i find interesting things in clearance or in the little stationary section
stickers, fun patterned paper, etc
you can find a lot of interesting scrapbook/journal materials on places like etsy
basically like. get into the habit of looking for interesting colors or patterns or graphics on things that you might otherwise throw out or ignore. save things even if you dont see an immediate artistic use for it so youll have plenty to choose from in the future. the downside of this is you will accumulate drawers of straight up garbage,

Your colleges look incredible! Do you have any tips on how to create a college for a beginner like me?
auauuaua thankyouuu🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
personally my method is to just slap shit on there without thinking too much about it. sometimes i have a theme in mind when i start but its pretty much all improv for me & this creates a certain Messy vibe. if youre somebody who wants a Neater result then i have no idea😭😭😭 anyways my friend asked something similar recently & this was the advice i gave them:
use any shit
go through glue like your life depends on emptying that tube Yesterday
dont plan anything lest you grieve over the failure to adhere to it [<-note: this one may not apply if youre going for a cleaner & more deliberate style]
even if it has no aim or meaning at the time you will Definitely see what you meant when you look back on it in 5 months
junk mail is your best friend
go hog penis balls-out wild
it also helps to accumulate a fuckass load amount of crap to use. somebody else asked recently about materials & i gave them [a list] of some things i think are good to use
if u wanna ask about anything more specific feel free otherwise i think once u start ur style & methods will kinda start falling into place on their own

ive been on spring break for almost a week and I've been getting over covid for most of the time but when I got better enough to do something I got obsessed with painting watercolor bubbles. this is just a few of the pages I did.
this was the (short) video that set me off on it:
https://youtube.com/shorts/4h2EzA00zlo?si=_0b_xKflxaZhuU8g
and there are many more videos by other people that I watched for different ideas of how to do this, and I combined a few techniques and just messed around for awhile.
the last photo is the end of a letter back to my cousin, we're pen pals :3 it's my favorite because I kept the colors separate through the process and just added them to another palette (a plastic lid I covered in saran wrap) before dipping something circular in them, if that makes sense. instead of mixing them/watering them down all in the same place where I dipped, which gave me much more muddied color like the first one. but also the photo of the letter was taken with natural light so it also looks the best for that reason haha
