Gibernau awakes from nightmare
by Rick Broadbent
SETE GIBERNAU has spent the past month riding a tidal wave of emotion after the death of his friend and team-mate, Daijiro Kato, from injuries suffered in the opening race of the MotoGP season, in Japan. Tragedy, though, has brought its own motivation and the Spaniard has emerged from the shadows to mount an unexpected challenge to Valentino Rossi.
The maelstrom of raw feelings will keep on churning tomorrow as Ryuichi Kiyonari makes his debut as Kato’s replacement in the French Grand Prix. With the pain still coursing through the Telefonica Movistar Honda camp, it was a difficult but necessary decision for Fausto Gresini, the team manager. “Together the team members are trying to find some peace of mind,” he said.
Gibernau took Kato’s death as hard as anyone in the paddock. His subsequent win in South Africa was one of those lilting moments that transcend sport. It was as if he had browbeaten fate into providing a suitable tribute and his televised press conference was positively heart-rending. It was only Gibernau’s second win in the elite class and, after finishing sixteenth last season, signalled his rejuvenation. Having switched from Suzuki to Honda, he is fourth in the championship, despite falling in Spain a fortnight ago, and is one of those clinging desperately to Rossi’s coat-tails.
“What happened to Daijiro was something none of us are programmed for,” Gibernau said. “I don’t understand it because we don’t really understand what death means. Somehow we need to change the weakness to a strength. For the person who has gone and for his family, that is the best thing you can do.”
Gibernau admits that he did not always feel that way. When, after two weeks in a coma, Kato died just before the team were due to fly to South Africa for the second round. Gibernau initially said he could not go. “The next night I went to bed, didn’t sleep, tossed and turned, and thought that, at the end of the day, life keeps going,” he said.
“If Daijiro could’ve seen me, he’d have been sadder if I’d stopped. So I went to Welkom but it was only when I got there that it hit me. It’s one thing saying he’s gone and another to realise it. When I saw my bikes without his, I had to leave. I think about him now. You go through stages. Now I have a new team-mate and it’s weird because that makes it more real. But Daijiro’s family follow the races. His son looks at me and says: ‘That’s Dad’s team-mate.’ ”
Gibernau, a thoughtful figure who studied business at university before switching to the family trade, started the season with high expectations. Backed by a big sponsor and buoyed by a blistering pre-season, he arrived at Suzuka flushed with optimism. Then Kato hit that wall and, according to Gibernau, “everything stopped”. “I’d got to a peak where everything was right, and then it was over,” he explained. “The year we’d expected to be great had turned into our worst nightmare. I thought we were finished. I wondered if we would go on.”
The team did go on and Gibernau beat Rossi in South Africa to kickstart the healing process. That Rossi was on the factory Honda and Gibernau “the standard bike” underlined his achievement. “Valentino got off the bike and said: ‘I wanted to beat you bad,’ ” Gibernau said with a grin.

sometimes men are obsessed with other men not because theyre secretly gay but because theyre so misogynistic that they literally dont view women as people worthy of any degree of attention or value
