So I know you once said that we knew we should have been cooked with the show's abuse apologia when they made Chloe bond with her mother a good thing, however I want to ask what moment solidfied the show's abuse apologia for you

When they started hinting that Adrien is a Sentimonster in season 4. Because, like, here's the thing; there was no way to make Adrien a Sentimonster without it being some flavor of abuse apologia. I was still in the “wait and see” crowd during season 4, but I could see the warning signs and lost interest in writing my Miraculous Big Bang fic halfway through. I wrote so many “Adrien is not a Sentimonster” essays that were more like “Adrien better not be a Sentimonster”.

Look, abusers are human beings with potentially deep emotional lives, I know that. But, there is a line where depicting an abuser as a complex human being turns into abuse apologia, and that's when we depict the abuser more sympathetically than their victim. That's taking sides.

Now here we are, three years later and the fandom is spouting the most cliché abuse apologia and blaming Chloé and Adrien for being just so difficult that of course their poor, overwrought parents abuse them. And that's when people aren't framing this abuse as a favor. Oh, Chloé is just ungrateful, oh, Adrien is just too needy, Adrien is cruelly forcing Marinette to gaslight him. “Chloé’s parents are abusive” and “Gabriel is abusive” didn't used to be a hot take.

I love, love, LOVE it when I can tell a fic author has integrated their specialized knowledge in a fic. I was reading a fic that at some point included the character going to visit an art therapist, and it's so clear that the author is an art therapist themself, and the details included are just immaculate and I love it. I've previously read about a character doing fencing for no other reason than the author clearly wanting to write a sport they understood. A character being given a hyperfixation on bugs just so the author can infodump themselves.

I eat it up every time, it brings such a smile to my face
