I know I say that I'm kinda nuts for doing the amount of visual research I do, but at the same time: Specificity is SO much more compelling and real feeling, and imo not getting references often makes things look more amateur.

Eg. drawing a sofa- my mental image of a sofa is something like this:

Like. Its a sofa. It works. But it's not very convincing, the pillows are kinda wrong at the back, and it's not really giving any information about the owner. Even if you want a basic sofa... What kind of basic.

Anyway I'll get off my soapbox but specificity is sexy and fun and it can do your storytelling for you!

what line exercises did u use to get your lineart so smooth and flowy!! (if that makes sense)

I think the two biggest things I learned that helped me the most with lineart are:

1. Try your best to draw lines in one sweeping motion, even if it means drawing a line further than it needs to go and erasing. Obviously, the less breaks you have in a line, the smoother it's going to be.

For longer lines, using the "smoothing" feature on a brush (I think it might be called "stabilization" in CSP and Procreate?) really helps.

But as far as exercises go, just doing a page of long sweeping lines can really help. Also, try drawing a line and then replicate the same line over top of it in one fluid motion. It's really just about getting your muscles used to making deliberate, uninterrupted strokes.

2. A big revelation that I think changed how I approached a lot of my art came from a class I took with Woulter Tulp. I asked him why my sketches always looked so much better than my lined work and he said that sketches are naturally lively and have a lot more expression. Sketched lines tend to be loose and less labored over, while lineart can feel stiff and lose a lot of the expressiveness of the sketch.

So it kinda changed my approach in that I really try to not overthink when I do my "lineart". I honestly look at it more as a "cleaned up sketch" than anything else. It's okay if it's not perfect, if the lines aren't perfectly clean. Having a textured brush tends to help me stay in that mindset, since it gives my lines a sketchy sort of feel by default.

Idk if that's at all helpful lol but those are the two big things I think about when cleaning up my sketches!
