The difference on how I write song, compared to other people
Most of the time the biggest difference is I write, record and mix my song in my bedroom whereas other artists would either write in a studio or maybe somewhere different. From what I’ve seen from other artists, people tend to write different depending on who the artist is. A lot more people have written and recorded a song in their bedroom more recently due to the technology thats now available to the public.

Dave Grohl on writting music

Dave Grohl jokingly shows how you can write a pop song very quickly. This was mostly a joke but its based on fact.

Dave Grohl gave an explanation on how he wrote the record on concrete and gold.

How blink 182 changed up the way they wrote music for the Untitled record
youtube
Originally, they would usually go into a rehearsal studio write their songs there and then go into a recording studio to record, mix and master the songs. This time around they went and rented a house to stay in while they recorded and wrote the songs for the untitled record. They did this so they could stay and experiment with their sound so it didn’t sound like their other records.
Their last record was based on the fact that the studio didn’t allow them to expand on their sound, so they wrote the songs out of spite from the record company. Mark wrote ‘ The Rock Show’ and Tom wrote ‘First Date’ out of the fact they where angry or upset.

Heres the video on how they made those songs.

Modelling the Drum set
Tumblr media
I started by adding a circle into the scene. This was a different from what I used from the other model because the guitar can be modelled from a 2D reference but since the drums are made out of multiple drum parts, I can’t ‘sketch’ it out using a plane this time.
Tumblr media
From there, I created the basic drum shape that I’d be using for the snare and toms.
Tumblr media
From there, I added the basic shapes for the drum tuners. Then I made the different sizes for each tom drum there was.
Tumblr media
Then I worked on the kick drum using the basic shape and tuners from the toms. I have to tweak the metals parts so they looked more like a kick drum.
Tumblr media
I then worked on the extra detail for the drum rack for the top two tom drums. This was the hardest to do as I reference I used wasn’t clear enough for this part. Also, I required me to start from scratch whereas the other drum parts I could duplicate and work on them from there.
Tumblr media
This is as far as I got with the drums. This was one of the hardest models to do as it was time consuming and pushed me to what I could model. I am really happy with the result so far.

This was the reference I used for the drum set.

Modelling the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster in Blender
Tumblr media
Firstly, I added a reference image and started to roughly sketch around the guitar using a plane.
Tumblr media
Once that was done, I separated the neck from the body of the guitar, because that’s how it is usually in real life. Also gives me the chance to add some detail.
Tumblr media
I then went on to tweaking the shape of the body and extruding it to make it 3D. I then did the same to the neck and for both I added edge loops close to the edge to define the edges around the guitar. From there I added the extra details like the pickups, the bridge of the guitar, etc.
Tumblr media
From there I added the strings, and the extra knobs and controls on the body of the guitar. It was almost finished just needed to add the tuning knobs of the guitar.
Tumblr media
Finally I added the tuning knobs on the guitar. The Gibson was finally finished from here. From there, I did the same thing with the fender guitar.
Tumblr media
I didn’t finish the fender guitar due to time, hopefully I can find some time to work on it soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are the two reference images that I used for modelling the guitars.

Fender JAZZMASTER Guitar by Roberto Tula
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love how life like it is. The only part I’d probably change is the gloss level of the guitar to make it a more matte finish but the artist did a good job capturing the realism of the guitar. I think with the matte finish, this would be the look I’d go for my guitars.

PRS Tremonti SE by Erlend Brodal
Tumblr media
I think this is more of the look that I want for my guitar models in the music video. It’s super clean, a nice simple finish and overall you can tell what guitar it is. I also like how the artist did the gloss to the headstock of the guitar.

Lionel's Guitar (asset for 'The Hex') by Brendan Sullivan
I think this style is more fitting for a video game, though I like how he has changed the original look into a more pixelated form. I also appreciate the level of detail that he put into the model to try and keep the look of the guitar. The only problem I have with it, is the style isn’t consistent. So where the body of the guitar is a certain size x pixels by y pixels, the head of the guitar and the strings don’t fit that. It’s not a consistent size all over.

Old Bell Organ & Piano Co. Organ by Garrett Brown
Tumblr media
I really like how he used a lot of browns in his colour palette to give it a very old 60s aesthetic He uses a lot of extra detail also like the discoloured areas of the piano to help give it a very worn out look to it. He also added patterns to the sides of the piano which adds a lot to the look. I may not want to go as old as this, I may want to look at some of the newer stuff in terms of models.

Marceline's Ax Bass by Jorge Luz
Tumblr media
This was a recreation of the bass used by Marceline in the show adventure time. I really like the extra detail in the texture to show how worn out it is. I also like the way that the bass looks like a weapon. I want to try and get more creative with my instruments with ideas like this

Acoustic Guitar model by Andrés Oñate Losada
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like the level of detail in the guitar, with the bump mapping and the extra scratches and tweaks to make it seem less polished and more battered. I also like how unique the colour is, make it seem like it was made a long time ago and got worn over time. The stickers also help give it that extra feel to it. I will probably not go into that level of detail for my own project, will probably keep it clean and simple.

Violin 3D Model
Tumblr media
I like how the modeller uses bevelled edges to get the nice smooth look to the edges, I also like how the modeller made it look as realistic and added a simple default colour to it to show off the model. I would like to do something like this for my 3D models in my animation.

Difference between modelling in game and movies
https://www.pluralsight.com/blog/film-games/whats-the-difference-a-comparison-of-modeling-for-games-and-modeling-for-movies
Here I learned that modelling in game requires less polygons than film, so the asset developers utilise transparent materials and less polygons in their work. I would most likely use the film way to model my assets for my music video

I love the animation that was done here, its very clean and has a very simple style to it. The references to 80s food labels was also a nice touch. This is another idea of how you could mix 2d and 3d, you can rotoscope the entire video.
youtube
This video uses a lot of bright and colour texts of the lyrics from the song. There are plenty of font changes also that keep the video fresh. I’m not a huge fan of how flashy it is, as it hurts a lot to see. I really love the colours that where used here, so I would like to see how that could be used in my music video.

I love the very creepy and sinister feel to the video, the muddy colour scheme and the gruesome imagery that the director helps brings to the table. It’s in the comeplete different direction of how I want to do my own music video, but I can appreciate its craft.

I love the use of black and white throughout these videos. Suit and tie gives off a very 60s retro style to it which I love, whilst the other one has a more gritty feel to it. I won’t use a style like for my music video but, I will work on finding a good colour scheme to use for my own.

I personally really like the experimentation that the director did inorder to create the music video, however I don’t think it’s something I’m looking for my own music video. I would like to develop some ideas to see if I am able to try something like this in the future.
