This is Aidan’s work. I couldn’t fit all animations onto this post due to Tumblr’s conditions. It’s been really nice to watch his project develop and see how things have altered and developed. I know he began this project unlike anyone else as he wanted to have a focal point of making music. At the start he told me how he wanted to showcase an emotion for instance a piece of music along with visuals to demonstrate sadness or anger. I know Aidan wants to come back and do a year or two taking a music course so it’s a really good way to introduce and have work to present in his future. But I think he really struggled to decide how this would visually convey which is understandable. It takes a lot of creativity to entertwine the two but also to actually do both elements of making the music and making the art it’s even more challenging. I don’t think I initially understood his concept but now I see this end result and I love it. I think it really encapsulates him as a person too and he has a very distinguished style in his art that also is very representative of his own interests. Even if you weren’t to know Aidan in person you can tell from his projects that he has a liking towards the more unusual and mystical things in life and likes to find the sweet side of them.

I saw this image on the right and really loved the art style so I thought maybe I could emulate it. I also think a darker style like this would reflect the character better however as I was drawing it I still felt like it wasn’t representing my project and felt disconnected from the other work I had been producing so I went back to thinking of other ideas. That’s when I start3 thinking more about behind the scenes of a set and had the idea of a directors chair. And then I thought that perhaps I could have the idea of the rabbit unzipping out of the costume by leaving the costume on the chair or floor.

I worked on the a2 poster and I was still not confident about it. It feels more of a sketch and not a poster that represents my style best and overall project as clear.

Here’s the sides. I’m pretty happy with it just feel like maybe something is missing, I’m not sure yet. Perhaps because I have couple last adjustments and things to add. It also hasn’t got my animations inside. I forgot to note in the other posts about the tv remote being painted grey and also the buttons/dials got completed. I was quite lucky and just had these white plastic circles lying around at home so I just added the black line details and it was complete.

With the antenna of the tv, the wire part was pretty simple. I got some copper wire from the workshop and used some pliers to bend it into a zigzag shape then spray painted black. The half sphere part at the bottom was a lot more difficult. I initially thought maybe I’d find like a tennis ball or some ball big enough and cut in half or I know you can buy like the polystyrene balls so that was another option. But I didn’t have any of these at hand so I just hoped for the best and tried some tinfoil and sculpey. Honestly it’s not my favourite and the idea doesn’t look as great as I’d hoped but I think it gives the impression of what I wanted. I’m still unsure if I should draw the black cartoon lines to match the rest of the box.

With the stencils I cut earlier I cut and stuck them on then spray painted. I think either the paint didn’t dry properly or it’s too many layers of paint that that masking tape ripped up some areas and they went strangely soggy. I realised I couldn’t cover it and thought maybe make it look purposeful so with a knife I scratched up the paint a bit more.

I was quite lucky and found out Aidan had bought a packet of these pills for his last project amongst made some fake cigarettes. So I reused those however the pills had some love heart faces on so I just stuck that side down to the box so it wasn’t visible.
I also wanted to make like a speaker on the tv but I struggled a lot with that but I just cut some cardboard glued lines of hot glue across for some texture. Aidan helped me grind down a pencil and rub the led to make it look a little more speaker like. I still think they look a little odd but they’ve grown on me since.
I had a clear glass dish which I was going to use for an ashtray however if the rabbit had just come off stage then an ashtray would be too convenient and so the initial idea was to cut a beer can is half. I was talking about this and came to realise how would he cut the can in half as the rabbit. And thought he probably just wouldn’t and would either throw the cigarette buts on the ground or maybe use beer cans without cutting them as ashtrays. So I bought in some cans but left them uncut but crumpled up a little. I only have two but I think that a few more might be good so I’ve asked around and have got a friend who’s going to give me some on Thursday.

Whilst I drew up my sticker ideas I had sketched an idea of including a carrot bunting. So I drew and cut out the carrot on orange paper and did the same on green paper for tops. I also printed my stickers out on sticker paper cut those and stuck them to my box tv some stickers on the front and the rest on the other side.

Aidan edited the id from Superbad and so I printed it amongst a stencil that I would cut and spray onto my box

I started trialing some ideas for my A2 poster. And I really liked the idea of the rabbit in like a weird pose like this. I’m not sure why specifically this photo for reference but it just felt correct to his character and felt a little more like punk and Liam Gallagher esk. I also thought it’d make the drawing more dynamic. So I started drawing some version up in procreate. But I think they looked bad. I think because I was drawing from a human body it made it difficult to translate that into a rabbit form. So I took a break and went back to drawing on paper. Starting with the pose again but then going and doing a different rabbit. Something that looked more cartoony. I looked at Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh since he stand up like a person but maintains his rabbit anatomy. And then drew a better style of face but I had a couple notes on it since it felt to innocent and soft to be the hot headed alcoholic I had planned. So another image was drawn and I’m pretty confident with this one. But I also now realised I need to draw it up with the “costume” coming off.
Initially I said I was thinking about leaning into the teddy bear thing but I think it makes him look to friendly which isn’t what I want.

I’ve started to consider my A2 poster more and I can’t reuse my claymation style drawings so perhaps my other design could be used to tie the ideas together. I also said about how I unconsciously used my own plush rabbit as inspiration. So I’m beginning to think that perhaps I lean into drawing my rabbit as a teddy bear looking design.

I spoke about how Ren and Stimpy were a point of inspiration for creating The Addict (I’ve also come to realise it’s always confusing or unnecessarily long to describe each version of Truman, so I’ll just be calling him Truman unless it’s the ‘bad’ side of him which I’ll call The Addict). But looking further into John Kricfalusi’s work there’s a lot to compare with my own style. There was a commissioned piece of Spider-Man and it was clearly based on caricature art. The exaggerated proportions from this style translate to his own original characters. Ren and Stimpy were produced by Spumco an animation production company co-owned by John Kricfalusi. I was looking into what other work they produced and I found out they created a music video for Bjork. Initially I thought it was a strange cross-over but I watched the music video and it was still weird. But it was on brand and made sense for Bjork and the company. So I think this is where my personal style and taste clash with that of John Kricfalusi. I think I’m not against wanting to explore similar themes to him but I think Kricfalusi doesn’t shy away from being grotesque about it. Whereas I think I prefer something more typically cute. I also think I like to lean into an era like the 70s and 60s considering my past projects.

I think from an illustration perspective I think I could easily draw Truman like John Kricfalusi because he’s quite a rounded looking animal character similar to that of Ren or Stimpy. I’ve already created almost like a logo or television opening however I think there’s always room to change and develop it. I didn’t look to heavily into font inspiration for those because in past projects I’ve investigated that quite often. However I had in mind what I’d be looking for. Something easy to read; child friendly and on theme with the show. I think looking at the font and opening title for Ren and Stimpy it’s a good point of reference for finding something that fits the aesthetic. It’s a little all over the place but it follows the characters personalities. It’s quite a square font with unequal spacing amongst this the colour changes for some letters. In a way it feels like how the characters would write or sign their names. But it’s also kind of reflective of how children learn to write especially with the changing of each letter size.

I got a lot of feedback from this rabbit design. I didn’t want to use it but it was suggested I should trial a version of the rabbit coming out of the smaller clay looking one almost as if it was a suit he zips into. I like the concept but I just ran out of time to do it and by this point I was already quite far into the other version.

Edited the sketches to be more of a worksheet. But I just kind of realised my rabbit is just a drawing of my plush rabbit.
