Bow Lake Sunday. High winds were blowing ice floe islands along the shoreline and the clouds caught fire. Sunrise at Lake Agnes yesterday. I hiked up here the dark. I thought of bears as I was hiking alone but if there were any they heard me calling "yo bear!" and hid. I was thinking last night about how photography has taken me to so many beautiful experiences...when I likely would have been sleeping otherwise and missed them. I can't even begin to describe how beautiful it was to be here in the still darkness of the night, listening to the seals barking and slapping, and watching the milky way rise over the ocean. Last night after driving from Victoria to Calgary the possibility of Milky Way shots had me back in the vehicle at midnight and heading to Kananaskis where skies were supposed to be clear. Wispy clouds rolled in though, and there was a lot of light pollution from Calgary. TBT to a foggy morning when I left my back country campsite, after a night of pouring rain and wild lightening, hiked to my car and drove 15 minutes to the trail head. In the dense fog and darkness I lost the trail, and wandered around looking for the way until I ran into a couple, also lost, but soon we were back on the trail and found the Mesa arch. The fog cleared, the sun came out for a second for a sunburst (which I previously posted) and then the soft cloud -filtered sun lit the valley. I was thinking about what makes photography special for me. For me being there and being able to capture this image was special. But this isn't a unique image. If the day hadn't been foggy and rainy there may have been a couple hundred photographers there for sunrise. For me the adventure and journey to get there made this special to me. For me photography is about getting there as much as it is about being there and capturing a moment.
