In another example of "Taylor switching the meaning of a lyric when she repeats it that absolutely guts me," this absolutely hit me in So Long, London yesterday:
How much sad did you think I had Did you think I had in me? Oh, the tragedy.
In this first pre-chorus, oh, the tragedy is kind of exasperated or sarcastic, not unlike the tone in "How Did It End?" when the nosy acquaintances want to know the gory details. It gives, "how long can we be a sad song?" You can almost feel the eyeroll in her, that they became another breakup cliché. She's resigned to it.
But then when we get to the last pre-chorus (?) after the bridge, it has flipped meaning:
How much sad did you think I had, Did you think I had in me? How much tragedy?
It doesn't come across in writing, but absolutely does in her tone when she sings, how much tragedy?. It's gone from a commentary on their communication breakdown, to a plea to ask how much pain she had to endure before he'd take it seriously, how much she was meant to suffer before something had to change? It's devastating.
The whole song is a journey, but that last pre-chorus just gets down to the heart of it -- how much was she supposed to be able to endure? How could this person not see how she was dying? (Which ties back to YLM.) She goes from resigned to heartbroken with the change in inflection and it's brutal.

i actually think its incredibly funny that people can just log on to the internet and get in a fight with a guy in another country. what a privileged time we live in. you used to have to go to war to do that

I’ll be 30, she gasps. I’ll probably still be single, let’s be honest. No one’s going to sign up for this and everything that goes with it.- (2015)
I'm perfectly fine, I live on my own. I made up my mind, I'm better off bein' alone.- (2016)
People started talking, putting us through our paces. I knew there was no one in the world who could take it. I had a bad feeling.- (2017)
Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?- (2019)
But there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west. I'd give you my sunshine, give you my best. But the rain is always gonna come if you're standing with me… No, I could never give you peace.- (2020)
I, oftentimes, in my anxieties, can control how I am as a person and how normal I act and rationalize things, but I cannot control if there are 20 photographers outside in the bushes and what they do and if they follow our car and if they interrupt our lives. I can’t control if there’s going to be a fake weird headline about us in the news tomorrow.- (2020)
I wake up screaming from dreaming one day I'll watch as you're leaving 'cause you got tired of my scheming for the last time- (2022)
Please I've been on my knees, change the prophecy. Don't want money just someone who wants my company. Let it once be me. Who do I have to speak to about if they can redo the prophecy?- (2023)
