I am currently going through my library and reading books to decide whether to keep or get rid of them. Here are my honest reviews as reminders to myself why I shouldn’t hoard them.

Keeping the Moon
By Sarah Dessen
3.5⭐️
Nicole’s mom is a world famous life coach who has to tour Europe over the summer. Colie is shipped off to her aunts house where she learns how to have self confidence and gets a boyfriend along the way. It’s a very cliche teen romance novel, but good for those nights where you just want some feel good fluff. I will keep it because it’s one of the least awful YA romance I’ve read yet in this unhaul attempt.

Basic Cinderella story. Not really my cup of tea anymore. I also do not have the rest in the series. I probably will not keep it.

Wintergirls
By Laurie Halse Anderson
4⭐️
Lia loses her best friend Cassie to bulemia and begins her next downward spiral to near death experiences with anorexia. Every one of her books is filled with such raw emotion. It is insane. The book was good but I think I can only read it when my head is in a good place. Will keep for now.

The Upside of Unrequited
By Becky Albertalli
4⭐️
Molly Peskin-Suso, cousin of Abby Suso of Love Simon and Leah on the Offbeat game, is fat and afraid of rejection. She always has crushes but never acts on them. Reminded me of my high school relationship, but a little close to home. Not as good as the other two books but still decent. Will keep.

Girl becomes a parallel universe’s tie to earth by going to their university. It’s an interesting concept but I only have the second book, so I will get rid of it.

Art Geeks and Prom Queens
By Alyson Noël

Rio’s wild ride of becoming popular and falling back out. I used to like this book in middle school and high school but I was cringing so much through it that I skipped a few chapters in the middle just so that I could be done with it. Get rid of.

Ask the Passengers
By A. S. King
4⭐️
Astrid is gay in a small town and she is struggling with her identity. Her families is pretty shit and she has to keep up a facade the whole time because everything in a small town must be perfect. This one hit a little too close to home and my anxiety was bad through all of it. Good book though. Will keep.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli.
4⭐️
Not as good as Simon. The love interest and actual gayness happens fairly late in the book and I’m not really sure I like that pairing. It was the cliche haters to lovers/I dumped my boyfriend for a girl oooh scandalous kind of book. I know she probably meant well but that is pretty much how it came off. I really wanted a cutesy WLW book where they slowly fall in love and there is no extreme drama other relationship wise. Like why does it always have to be guy focused. Will still keep.

Snow
By Tracy Lynn
3⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A retelling of Snow White. Snow grows up, her step mother comes into the picture. She is assaulted at her fourteenth birthday party by some count, her stepmother gets mad and locks her in a tower for years. Snow finds out that her stepmother is going to kill her (in order to use Snow’s heart in some magic so that the evil stepmother can have a baby) so she escapes and becomes a maid to a group of half human half animals. A decent retelling of Snow White, brought some new elements into the mix. I will likely keep it for my collection of retellings and for light reading.

Beauty
By Robin McKinley
3⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A retelling of Beauty and the Beast. A decent version. Pretty true to the stories I’ve read of Beauty and the beast. Nothing mind blowingly new. Will likely keep.
Beauty lives with her family in a nice house in a town until her father’s ships go missing and they run out of funds. They move to a village and move in with Beauty’s sister’s husband who is a blacksmith. After her sister has twins, her father hears word that one of his ships has made its way back to port, so he goes back to town to take care of his business. On the way back her father gets stuck in a blizzard, comes upon a castle, insert normal beauty and the beast story here.
It’s a decent book and I have liked a number of Robin’s other retellings.

If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where’s My Prince?
By Melissa Kantor
3⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New girl who likes art and basketball gets chosen (to be the girlfriend of) the star basketball player. She fights a lot with her step mother. Turns out star basketball player is a jerk. Actually falls for the cute, talented boy in her art class. Ends up tolerating her step mom. YA (sophomore in high school). I’m too old for this, ended up siding more with her stepmother. Will not keep.
