A new start

For years, I had a tumblr under the name Just a Fool on You. Then my password got locked, my account was linked to an expired email address….well, it’s a long story.

So I started a new tumblr.

Due to password and expired email account issues, I've started a new tumblr as @imthepaterfamilias. I still have access to this account from one of my devices, but will lose it if I ever sign out. The tone is decidedly different, but check it out and give me a follow if you feel so inclined. Thank you kindly.

The Department of Justice is suing the state of North Carolina over HB2

On Monday afternoon, the Department of Justice announced it would sue the state of North Carolina, just hours after Republican Gov. Pat McCrory said the state would launch its own lawsuit defending the state’s increasingly tendentious HB2 “bathroom bill.” Legal experts are already forecasting a victor in this litigious battle.

I am posting this for every bigoted asshole who argued that Canada shouldn’t accept Syrian refugees; whether it was because “they might be terrorists” or under the hollow concern that “we need to look after ourselves first.” We are all human. We should all look out for each other. That’s what decent people do.

Frick. Northern Alberta is burning.

An area south of High Level, Alta., is under an evacuation order as a fire at a forest product mill rages out of control.

Rural residents in an area five kilometres south of High Level between the Bushe Reserve and Highway 35 are being asked to evacuate immediately and go to the reception centre located at the Town of High Level office to register and receive further instruction.

The Bushe River Reserve is under an evacuation alert.

The fire is at the Norbord yard. Norbord is an international company with a plant in High Level that manufactures Oriented Strand Board.

Emergency updates are being posted on the Mackenzie County Facebook page.

Waiting for the End of the World

I see images like this and words fail. The Slave Lake wildfire in 2011 was devastating - the magnitude of this is almost incomprehensible.

Between 60,000 and 80,000 people have evacuated the city and with winds shifting, it’s expected the fire will be even worse today.

No deaths have been reported as yet and there were two births overnight in evacuee camps. Thanks to Facebook, I know my friends in Fort McMurray are OK. We all hope for these miracles.

Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit released their new album, Painting of a Panic Attack, a few weeks back via Canvasback Music/Atlantic. Today the band stopped by SiriusXM satellite radio and covered Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia.” Springsteen’s original was recorded for the 1993 film Philadelphia, which was directed by Jonathan Demme and starred Tom Hanks as a gay lawyer with AIDS and Denzel Washington as a fellow lawyer who defends him for being wrongfully fired by his firm. Hanks won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance and Springsteen won Best Original Song. Check out the cover over on the site, followed by Springsteen’s original.

On Saturday feminist blogger Alexis Isabel started an online movement. All it took was: “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.” Tons of other users jumped in to echo the call. And when some chimed in to say it would “confuse” kids, Isabel had the perfect response.

I hate this election. Everything about it makes me miserable. Donald Trump. Donald Trump’s fans. Twitter. Abortion. Xenophobia. That thing on Ted Cruz’s lip. The opinions in Ted Cruz’s brain. Walls. Refugees. Four hundred and ninety-seven thousand debates. My Bernie friends yelling at my Hillary friends. My Hillary friends yelling at my Bernie friends. Straight white men insisting that identity politics have no value. The random dude who yelled at me for tweeting that I liked that little bird that landed on Bernie Sanders’s podium, because he thought it sounded like I liked the bird better than Bernie, and none shall besmirch the honour of the Bern on Trevor’s watch.
