For BOMB Magazine’s Editor’s Choice series, I spent time listening to “Blue Lagoon Woman,” the new EP from poet, vocalist, and composer Candice Hoyes – here’s what I heard (lovely music) –
“From beginning to end, the album traverses wide sonic territory in the archives of jazz and soul—conjuring, for example, a potent mid-1970s session with Anthony Braxton that swirls into vibraphone rain thrumming a Manhattan taxi cab roof after a night spent grooving to R&B in the smoky lounge at Nell’s. Like the layered undercurrents of the original Blue Lagoon—the cold saltwater drifting in with the tide, eddying with the warm freshwater streams, golden with tannins from upstream leaves—the analog textures and emancipatory visions of Candice Hoyes’s Blue Lagoon Woman are surprising, layered, elemental, and deep.”
