As a writer, I’m endlessly fascinated by the contradictions in people—especially the tragic ones. These paradoxes reveal a deeper truth, where strength masks sorrow and beauty hides pain.

Here’s a list of 10 eccentric yet tragic trait pairs, combining contrasting qualities that give each character a poignant, melancholic edge. These characters could be deeply moving, tragic, and thought-provoking:

Boundlessly Creative & Emotionally Numb Character Idea: They can craft breathtaking works of art that touch others’ hearts, yet they feel empty inside, unable to connect with their own creations. Their art speaks to everyone but themselves.

Empathic Healer & Chronically Ill Character Idea: They can take others’ pain away but suffer from an uncurable illness that no one else can heal. Their gift is both their strength and their curse, draining them even as they save others.

Unwaveringly Brave & Afraid of Love Character Idea: This character can face any monster or enemy without flinching, yet the idea of close relationships terrifies them. They would die for others but find it impossible to let anyone close.

Endlessly Forgiving & Self-Hating Character Idea: They forgive everyone’s faults and see the good in others, yet they can’t forgive themselves. While they bring peace to those around them, they’re haunted by self-loathing that won’t ease.

Prophetic & Forgotten Character Idea: They have visions of events to come but are cursed to be ignored and forgotten by everyone they meet. They watch disasters unfold knowing they could have helped, if only someone would remember them.

Habits That Reveal Deep Character

(A.K.A. the quiet stuff that says everything without screaming it)

❥ The “I Always Sit Facing the Exit” Quirk They don’t talk about their childhood much, but they always know where the exits are. Every restaurant. Every train. Trauma has muscle memory. Your job is to notice what it’s saying without needing a monologue about it.

❥ The “I Can’t Sleep Until I Hear You Lock the Door” Habit It's not controlling. It's care shaped like paranoia. They say “Goodnight” like it’s casual, but they’re counting the clicks of the lock like a lullaby. Let that show more than “I love you.”

❥ The “I Keep Everything You’ve Ever Given Me” Thing Not just gifts. Receipts with your doodles. The crumpled note you wrote when you were mad. Every bit of you that felt real. It’s borderline hoarder behavior, but also? It’s devotion.

❥ The “I Cook When I’m Sad” Pattern Their world’s falling apart, but suddenly everyone has banana bread. It’s not about food—it’s about control, about creating something warm when everything else is cold. And they won’t say it out loud, but they're asking, “Will you stay?”

❥ The “I Practice Conversations in the Mirror” Secret Before big moments, hard talks, or just answering the phone. They're rehearsing being okay. They're trying to be the version of themselves people expect. That’s not weakness—it’s survival wrapped in performance art.

❥ The “I Fix Other People’s Problems to Ignore My Own” Reflex Everyone calls them “strong,” but no one notices how fast they redirect. “How are you doing though?” they ask, one heartbeat after breaking down. Let your reader see how exhaustion wears a smile.

❥ The “I Never Miss A Birthday” Rule Even for people who forgot theirs. Even for exes. It’s not about being remembered—it’s about being someone who remembers. That’s character.

❥ The “I Clean When I Feel Powerless” Mechanism That sparkling sink? Not about hygiene. That’s grief control. That’s despair in a Clorox wipe. Let it speak volumes in the silence of a spotless room.

❥ The “I Pretend I Don’t Need Help” Lie They say, “I’m fine” like it’s a full stop. But their hands shake when they think no one’s looking. Let your other characters notice. Let someone care, even when they don’t ask for it.

❥ The “I Watch People When They’re Not Watching Me” Curiosity Not in a creepy way. In a poet’s way. In a “who are you when no one’s clapping” way. They love the in-between moments: laughter in elevators, fidgeting before speeches. That's who they are—observers, not performers.

You’re not just building characters, you’re excavating parts of yourself you didn’t know were buried under survival mode. You’re writing longing and rage and softness and ache into people who never existed, because sometimes that’s the only way to explain you.

You write loneliness disguised as love stories.

You write power in the mouths of characters who look nothing like you, because you needed to feel powerful somewhere.

You write grief in metaphors because writing it plain would break you.

This isn’t just storytelling.

This is transmutation.

This is how you turn shame into poetry. How you make sense of your own history by wrapping it in fiction. How you scream without making a sound.

Another Lifetime | Aoko x Kaito

Angst, Aged-up Characters, Drabble. Chapter 22 of Lovely Days

Maybe in another lifetime. He thinks.

Kaito glances at the photo, tracing his finger on the glass. She was smiling at the camera, eyes brightening and arms around his waist. The younger him had his face flushed, looking at her with a kind of fondness in his stare.

He felt his eyes soften.

A cough comes out of him and there's a stinging pain in his throat. He watches the petals and thorns falling out of his mouth, so swift, so brisk yet so smooth.

There's a trail of red liquid from the tips of his lips and he had to move aside the photo, making sure it stayed perfectly unaffected.

In another lifetime, he wouldn't be enduring the sadness and longing he was feeling now. In another lifetime, maybe he wouldn't be coughing out petals and thorns and blood every time he looked at her and maybe in another lifetime, he had a chance.

Kaito wheezes out the last of the remains.

The moonlight flickered across the city, giving it a shallow glow. He clutches the fabric of his coat, right above his heart and he closes his eyes in a wince.

Aoko, hope she's okay

He glances down, watching the female talking animatedly. A smile blooming on her face, the same smile in the photo. She faced the person that she was chatting with before she timidly pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

She's nervous

In another lifetime, it would be him moving away the strands of her hair away from her face. In another lifetime, he would be removing his jacket and wrapping it around her. In another lifetime, he would pull her closer.

She's okay now

He watches as the figure before her takes a step forward, wrapping his arms around her small frame. He watches as the boy pulls her close, giving a light kiss on top of her head.

She's in good hands

He watches as the girl leans up, tiptoeing to plant a kiss on the boy's lips. He watches even though he feels his heart breaking into a million pieces. He coughs involuntarily but tries his best to maintain it. He couldn't breathe, his lungs felt as if thorns were poking it and he couldn't stop wheezing out liquid.

In another lifetime, Aoko, that would have been me

As I try to improve my technical writing skills, I've noticed my describing skills are pretty lacking. So, here is a list of description exercises.

Setting Description

Pick a setting and describe it in a way that evokes a positive emotion, then describe the same setting negatively.

Pick a setting and try to describe it by using all of your senses.

Find a setting you've written before and write 500 words of pure description on it.

Describe a tree from the point of view of a character that's feeling a strong emotion, whether they're depressed, frustrated, or excited.

Character Description

Pick one of your characters and write a 500 word description of them.

Write a 500 word description on how your character feels about different people.

Pick 3 different characters and write 200 word descriptions for each of their voices.

Write a 500 word description about how your character looks at different people.

How to Make Your Characters Almost Cry

Tears are powerful, but do you know what's more impactful? The struggle to hold them back. This post is for all your hard-hearted stoic characters who'd never shed a tear before another, and aims to help you make them breakdown realistically.

The Physical Signs of Holding Back Tears

Heavy Eyelids, Heavy Heart Your character's eyelids feel weighted, as if the tears themselves are dragging them down. Their vision blurs—not quite enough to spill over, but enough to remind them of the dam threatening to break.

The Involuntary Sniffle They sniffle, not because their nose is running, but because their body is desperately trying to regulate itself, to suppress the wave of emotion threatening to take over.

Burning Eyes Their eyes sting from the effort of restraint, from the battle between pride and vulnerability. If they try too hard to hold back, the whites of their eyes start turning red, a telltale sign of the tears they've refused to let go.

The Trembling Lips Like a child struggling not to cry, their lips quiver. The shame of it fuels their determination to stay composed, leading them to clench their fists, grip their sleeves, or dig their nails into the nearest surface—anything to regain control.

The Fear of Blinking Closing their eyes means surrender. The second their lashes meet, the memories, the pain, the heartbreak will surge forward, and the tears will follow. So they force themselves to keep staring—at the floor, at a blank wall, at anything that won’t remind them of why they’re breaking.

The Coping Mechanisms: Pretending It’s Fine

A Steady Gaze & A Deep Breath To mask the turmoil, they focus on a neutral object, inhale slowly, and steel themselves. If they can get through this one breath, they can get through the next.

Turning Away to Swipe at Their Eyes When they do need to wipe their eyes, they do it quickly, casually, as if brushing off a speck of dust rather than wiping away the proof of their emotions.

Masking the Pain with a Different Emotion Anger, sarcasm, even laughter—any strong emotion can serve as a shield. A snappy response, a bitter chuckle, a sharp inhale—each is a carefully chosen defence against vulnerability.

Why This Matters

Letting your character fight their tears instead of immediately breaking down makes the scene hit harder. It shows their internal struggle, their resistance, and their need to stay composed even when they’re crumbling.

This is written based off of personal experience as someone who goes through this cycle a lot (emotional vulnerability who?) and some inspo from other books/articles
