For the last seven years I have been taking photographs from tall buildings in every city that I happen to visit. And only now I’ve decided to produce the pieces. Lots of work each one but worth it!

For Women’s History Month, we hope you’ll spend some time learning about the naturalist and scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. Even at the tender age of 13, she was viewing the world as a scientist by observing the lifecycle of #insects in her own backyard.

This striking image of insects on a banana flower is from one of her most important works, anglicized as Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam, published in 1705. Six years prior, one year before the turn of the 18th century, Merian travelled with her youngest daughter from the Netherlands to the South American Dutch colony of Surinam. Mind you, it was an era when women of her social position simply didn’t work, let alone travel unaccompanied across an ocean to spend years doing scientific fieldwork. The result was this remarkable work of 60 copperplate engravings that remains a significant contribution to entomology and ecology.
