so I made a bit of a discovery today.

Penders just took this image from issue 21: 3 stages of eve. One of the first stories he wrote solo. But clearly not one of the ones he drew, I believe Spaz did the art for this.

After that traumatizing story about a very serious subject matter, what do we get? Why, a connect the dots activity! For kids!

In recent years this has become one of the more infamous contributions Penders made to the comics just because it’s a fucking mess and because it’s easy to share and poke fun of out of context

I think someone forgot to tell Penders connect the dots activities are usually numbered. It’s hard to tell what it’s even supposed to BE, but I went ahead and connected the dots for everyone to show what it’s SUPPOSED to look like. I mean, maybe I got a couple things wrong, but I THINK that’s it? It’s Robotnik. SatAM Robotnik, because Penders is nothing if not perpetually stuck in the past. I have no fucking clue what the yellow line is supposed to be. Like, it’s partially his brow, but why does it extend all the way past his ear and down his head? It also really doesn’t help that he’s in profile

So yeah, it’s SUPPOSED to be Robotnik. The version to the right, however, is what most people tend to see

Did this a while back, using the butterfly in IDWs Sonic fan club as inspiration. Reworked her to be a Saffron and Cream character during the era when the freedom fighters didn't have any female characters tails' age that lasted past one issue. I swear I had better art for her but this is all I could find.

So update, I was looking this up again and a One Piece fan wiki brought up a different meaning of Kyozo, it’s apparently also the Japanese word for “reflection”…

That… makes a bit more sense than “religious temple of historical documents”. But neither is unfitting. Especially considering the whole terios thing.

According to the official game guide for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) the large golem-like enemy that appears in Mephiles' second boss encounter are actually Mephiles himself, having taken a monstrous form.

Shadow Generations (2024) further confirms this by having the creature share Mephiles' health bar and speak his dialogue upon being attacked.

In the files, the creature is known as "Kyozoress" / "Demon" in Sonic '06 and Shadow Generations respectively.

I actually have alot of thoughts on this one so lets break down why I made my choice and why I feel its the only real answer on this poll. Let's remember that the question is asking for ONLY ONE. This is vital to a lot of these choices. Sally's kinda pointless on her own, if she doesn't have Nicole or her freedom fighters, she only has her role as Sonics girlfriend, which is the least vital part of her character and also the most disruptive. Rotor's uniqueness as a character plummeted the moment we hit Sonic Adventure, with Tails firmly established as a boy genius and Sonics best friend, Rotor lost two of his most defining traits. With Big in the same game, Rotors last major trait as the chill but ecentric supporting guy is filled. Heck now we got Orbot and Cubot doing exactly what Rotor would be doing in Shadow generations. The only Point in bringing him in would be as part of the freedom fighters, since they wouldn't have a techie to help nicole if tails isn't on their team. Antoine would be fun as a means to give us a character with sword mechanics in the games. But without the other freedom fighters, he only fills that role as good as Gardon would. And I'd personally prefer Gardon be expanded into an actual character than have Antoine steal that chance from him. Bunnie does have some unique story potential, but its all tied to a version of eggman that's more twisted than game eggman, and without roboticization, all we really have is her prosthetic analogy to pull from. Which while it'd be amazing representation, there's really nothing stopping them from making a new character for that or giving an existing character a missing limb to fill that role. Bunnie can't really carry that narrative on her own. Nicole could potentially work alone, but without Sally she'd be kinda redundant to Yacker, Sage and Ariem. I like her a lot but they've closed the door on her being a solo character with the more recent games. Uncle Chuck really doesn't offer much other than warm fuzzies. Plus he's basically canon via that background character in IDW anyways. Snivley doesn't work with game Eggman, he'd just be a human orbot. Plus Wentos already has the pointy nosed human in green aesthetic in the games, and I want Wentos more prominent. As one of Johnny's biggest defenders, he would be so pointless in the game universe, Sonic doesn't need a social translator, and his shtick of being a regular guy without powers doesn't really work when wispons exist. Knuckles could use more people on his island, but Porker doesn't really fill that role better than existing game characters like Sticks and Trip would. Plus as much as I like the idea his design is too uninspired for a modern sonic character. Tekno slots in really well into existing game lore thanks to riders and Tails adventures, a battle bird mechanic that joins the heroes doesn't overlap as a concept with anyone, and the only character she shares a lot in common with- wave- kinda still works as a foil more than a redundant character. Plus she'd be a good character to permanently move the dummy ring bomb move to. Grimer doesn't have QUITE the same problems as Snively, and he could easily be reimagined as a Zeti. But his central arc has already been covered by Starline in full, and all grimer has left that starline didn't do, only serves to devalue Eggman by making him less responsible for metals creation. Brutus would work as a villain for the games, but metal already did his full arc at the start of IDW. So yeah, of these, only Tekno seems to be able to add something on her own that an existing character can't do.

Surge is a very chaotic neutral character here, leaning on either side of morality spectrum if and when it suits her, an agent of pure chaos. She’s been Mighty’s ally as many times as she’s been his enemy

Her origin is pretty much the same as it was in the old superman cartoon, she ran a super popular radio show ‘Livewire radio’ in metropolis talking shit about superman until, at her show’s 2nd anniversary celebration live show in the centre of metropolis, there was a thunderstorm

the cops showed up to shut it down and eventually mighty himself showed up cuz surge refused to stop the show and then she was struck by lightning, giving her her powers

Kyozoress looked off so I had a look into it. Googling Kyozoress results ONLY in links back to the model file, but the first half looked Japanese. So let's break it down syllable by syllable. Kyozore has some results, but it seems to only be chunks of sentences, so let's assume "Ress" is meant to be in English, probably "restored" or "restructured" or some other in-house term.

(Sonic Retro makes repeated notes of the demon forms files using unreadable extensions that no other character in the game uses, so I'd hazard a guess this guy was pulled in from the Fifth Phantom Saga prototype, same as silvers powers, and needed its file to be converted to fit into the game.) This leaves "Kyozo", which certainly can't mean anything that would fit -

...no that tracks with all the other religious and historical connections to mephiles. Also matches where this version of mephiles is fought. Guess his body really is a temple.

No no! I mean do you think that the zombot virus would be how she got her robotic limbs, since it's the only form of robotization in IDW's continuity, and theres nothing really like cyborgs save for in colors which was the fake robot form tails had.

Not really a mistake, just a bit of a confusing layout, she had sonic tails and amys boards all on hand, having recognized tails' handiwork, and since she hasn't gotten started on Amys she hasn't noticed that it wasn't worked on by tails. It's needlessly confusing, but it's not a contradiction.

Does anyone else keep getting the distinct feeling that Tails Adventure and Tails Sky Patrol would make a lot more sense if their contexts were swapped? Like, I can't be the only one that looks at Tails adventure and goes "This makes more sense as happening during labrynth and chaotix" and looking at sky patrol and going "This makes way more sense as an adventure tails had before meeting sonic."

Since the Japanese manual for Sonic Labyrinth (1995) clarifies that Tails is away traveling during the events of the game and the plot of Tails' Skypatrol (1995) involves Tails going out on a solo adventure, it's possible that the two games take place contemporaneously.

This Is actually in line with my general interpretation of 06's story: People often play the whole game and assume sonic and elise undoing 06 JUST undoes the events of that game and leaves the rest of the timeline alone. But not only does that NOT track with what point of time they were erasing, I don't think we were even following the main timeline to begin with. Lines like this, Elise having the cyan emerald for her entire life, Eggmans demeanor and machine design, Team Dark being an explicit GUN group and countless other oddities seem to imply that all of 06 is on a timeline that existed before the one we're familiar with, where the chaos emeralds were never gathered together until sonic silver and shadow used them to defeat Solaris. In a timeline where one emerald was always missing, eggman wouldn't get the satisfaction of nearly obtaining ANY of his goals, chaos wouldn't go perfect so Station Square would never get flooded, shadow would be brought out much earlier and thus have years to work out his issues with GUN since again, one emerald short stops him from activating geralds failsafe so he never does his death and amnesia thing. And in a timeline where the world gets destroyed shortly after Shadow the Hedgehog? Well Blaze would never meet sonic and might not come to his dimension until its been long since destroyed. So at the end of 06 we don't see the events of one game deleted, we see 10 years rewritten to the way WE remember them, with the events of the old timeline only being vaguely hinted at. I feel like that was supposed to be what the ending was supposed to make us realize, because it explains why everyone feels a bit moodier (save amy) and clears up what would otherwise be glarin plotholes. TL;DR: I personally think the reason the GUN guy says shadow took the test years ago because he did, in this timeline, because this isn't the same timeline as the mainline games until the very end makes it into that timeline.

According to Herman, an old acquaintance of Shadow from GUN, the in-universe time gap between Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is "years"

This is actually even funnier because she might not get this from her Saiyan side at all. Remember when Goku thought Gohan died to Buu but Videl was certain he survived? Any time Videl picked up on energy, her observations tended to be more accurate than the more experienced fighters.

WHY COULDN'T GOHAN SENSE PICCOLO IN DBS: SUPER HERO?

Some ppl were upset that Gohan couldn't sense Piccolo in disguise while Pan could. But, that's actually consistent with Gohan.

BOTH Gohan & Vegeta could turn Super Saiyan yet, NEITHER of the two Saiyans sensed Goten nor Trunks turn Super Saiyan until the kids did so in front of them. How could they not sense them turn SSJ before when they live with them??

It just seems that Saiyans don't always pay that much attention to specific ki signatures.

Most who complain about that scene in DBS: Super Hero either forgot about these scenes in DB, or they don't know about them because they've never watched/read the Buu Saga.

Heck, even Goku didn't sense Beerus was in a Monaka costume in the DBS anime. But that was played up more for comedy.

But, Pan seems to be more alert & can sense specific ki. Maybe it's because she's 1/4 Saiyans? Who knows?

can't tell if you got an answer for this, but Kintobor is a name used in Archie for Robotnik's family, I believe the early implication was that he reversed the name to disown his family, but later it was either stated outright or implied that the whole of the kintobor family reversed their name to disconnect them from Gerald and or Penders' Super Evil Robotnik who ended the world. It's basically a holdover of the sonic bible that for some reason found its way into Archie even though very little else of the bible did.

According to Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog issues #101 and #102 respectively, Sally Acorn and Julie-Su have canon birthdays; Issue #105 gives birthdays to Snively and Dmitri/Enerjak as well.

Sally’s is day 186 of the year 3220, Julie Su’s is 277 of 3221, Snively is day 271 of 2858, and Dmitri is 134 of 3206.

If we presume Mobius still has a ~365-day year, AND accounting for leap years, this would make Sally Acorn’s birthday July 4 (often recognized as American Independence Day), Julie-Su’s October 3, Snively’s May 14, and Dmitri’s September 28.

Drawloverlala or myself mistyped "Compiler" and the s is a little hard to see. Little concerned that my commission is being posted without a link back to the artist ( Tumblr is here DA here I think the twitter account is dead). But it DOES give me an excuse to bring up that the project I made this design for... is actually back in the works! It used to be a sprite comic (smackjeeves archive still has the old version I believe) but I'm slowly working towards preparing it to be a full-blown webcomic. Hoping to get the Pilot issue started sometime next year, and if that works out, maybe all you peeps who've been sharing this around will finally get context for this version of the character.

Mobius Redesign: Monk

A while ago I was challenged by someone to redesign one of the characters I had no intention of using ever. Monk is such a nothing character due to artificially being given a history with knuckles to fulfill the requirement of a rival in a most dangerous game plot. Any time I write adaptions I just put any character that already has that sort of relationship with Knuckles: Sonic, Julie-su, any of the dingos or dark legion goons, or my favorite, introducing Thrash WAY earlier. But for this project, I wanted to make Monk at least an interesting-looking rival, so to start, I made him actually a type of monkey. Mandrills are a striking animal, and making a purple one gave some interesting color scheme options. So alright, I got a species, color scheme, and I'm not changing his role since then there'd be nothing left of the original character. So how do I make him feel like a knuckles rival? And then I had the best idea I ever had.

And now Monk the Mandrill is one of my favorite redesigns ever.
