The Thief of Malconaire | Kale & Valentina

It had been carelessness and arrogance that brought Kale Brennan into the house of Malconaire that night. He'd spoken with Eithne after daring to sneak into the kitchens and, having already seen Rosie, he couldn't help being so near and not making an attempt to see Aoife and Brigit.

Night had fallen and the house was silent. Kale moved noiselessly through the great hall, the library, and up the grand staircase that led to the family rooms. It had not occurred to him that the girls would no longer have their old rooms: he did not know that they had been banished to the attics.

When he entered what had once been their private sitting room, he noticed that it felt different somehow -- less cozy and warm than he remembered. As he took in the decorations, he realized that it was because Valentina must have redecorated it to her own standards. There were no fresh flowers, no paintings of Malconaire or the family upon the walls (in fact, they had been replaced by a rather large one of Cassimir) and the comfortable sofas and chairs had been replaced by richly upholstered furnishings.

His back was turned when the door to the room was slowly opened and by the time he heard it, it was too late to escape.

Valentina Malconaire had seen him.

He should have turned back and gone home long ago. He could hear Ronan's voice inside his head -- how angry and disappointed he would be that he had allowed this to happen. Not only did he put himself at risk, he would be risking the lives and safety of the Malconaires, too, if anyone discovered them together.

Thankfully, Kale had the presence of mind to play the part of a thief -- better she not suspect that he was there to see her step-daughters. Kale drew his dagger. "Your earrings, Your Ladyship, and your necklace," He commanded. "Quickly."

Mountain Climbing | Kale & Fiona

It was not the first time that Kale had used Cormac Calleary's unobservant nature to his advantage. Cormac recognized Kale enough to know that he was a servant and when he saw him about Lorcan, he believed him to be his servant: misinformation which Kale had never been hasty to rectify.

He always did his best to avoid Eabha, Aine, and especially the Lorcan ladies whenever he snuck into the castle on official resistance business -- even if he doubted any of them should give him away, if they discovered him. However, the arrival of Rian Stafford had made things much more complicated and although he did not know Kale, he did not strike him as someone who would be as easily taken in as the current Lord Calleary and Kale did his best to avoid him completely, whenever possible.

It was an unexpected near encounter with the steward that prompted Kale into his current predicament: which happened to be attempting to scale the side of the great Lorcan mountain. He'd stolen out of a castle window, thinking that the climb wouldn't be half as difficult as it proved to be. It was in this moment where Kale found himself half climbing, half dangling that he considered that perhaps running into Rian Stafford would have been the safer option.

It was more than likely that Rian would have simply accepted that he had been a servant there and, if not, he could hardly have been worse off than he was now. Suddenly he wondered if his impulsive decision would be his last.

But as luck would have it, he soon found that he was edging close to where Lady Fiona's rooms were and, with a newfound strength, he managed to pull himself up unto her window sill and climbed into her room.

He grinned, a little proud of himself that he had managed it and suddenly possessed an arrogance that suggested he always knew that he could -- all lingering thoughts of his impending doom having vanished with his success.

Fiona Calleary was alone -- but it was only in this moment that he considered that he might have easily caught her otherwise. Luck certainly was on his side today. Perhaps he might actually say a prayer to the guardians tonight: for it did seem that someone was looking out for him.

"Don't mind if I pop in, do you?" He asked, plopping down into her arm chair that sat by the fireplace, propping his feet up. "Thought I'd take the back way in, as your unfortunate jailer is home. I do not envy you his company. He seems even more ill-humored than Ronan can be," He teased.

"Speaking of -- I've got a message for you."

the entire resistance: okay this club is here to do two things, restore peace and stability back to astaira .... and protect aoife malconaire at all costs .... but mostly the aoife thing ;DD

honestly just the fact that it was started by @forgottenronan means that this may or may not be part of their official mission statement ;D

but yes!!! he did steal valentina's broach (specifically the one she bought with the money she ~saved~ by firing him lmao) and used the money for good but is is also how he ultimately ended up in jail #whoops #noregrets

ahhh!! omg! yes, I completely agree!!! I feel like Aoife & Sebastian's default is just to go off on walks just to be away from everyone else and sorta just drift the farthest away and I'm not even kidding, if Kale saw this, his first instinct would be that Sebastian had kidnapped her or something and Aoife's felt like her only defense was to pretend to be friends w/ him until she could escape ... because that's the only explanation here!!! ;DDD

But no, if he had the unfortunate opportunity of seeing that they ahd become friends (and he would definitely believe that Sebastian wishes to be much more than just that!!!) I feel like Eithne is not the only one who is going to be getting a secret visit from Kale!

Kale: Why are all the Malconaire girls hanging out with/getting engaged to such unsavory men??? why is brigit the only sane one?? ;DD

Kale used to work at Malconaire before the war, but he was one of the many casualties when Valentina became mistress of the estate! I feel like he always managed to get his work done, but it was always at the last second and he'd sorta mess around until he actually got to work and ... ngl that got infinitely worse when Valentina took charge!

And since Kale never had Lord M take him under his wing in the same way that he did the Frost boys/he didn't have the same knowledge of the estate, as a whole, he was likely one of the first people Valentina let go!

I don't think that he was ever quite as close as the Malconaires/Frosts/Reaves families were, BUT I do think that he was probably really good friends with all of them and would literally do anything for them!!!

Since being fired from Malconaire, Kale took to thievery and eventually landed in the resistance with Ronan, which means he's been kinda MIA for awhile but ngl between the Varmont princes hanging around and Eithne getting with Cassimir, I feel like both Ronan and Kale will have to sneak back home to check in on the girls!!!!

Kale would think that Aoife is absolutely wonderful???? Like she's such a total sweetheart and so kind and considerate and honestly should be protected at all costs!!! I think that Kale would always try to get a laugh (or at least a smile!) out of her.

Kale laughed, "And yet, here we are. What was it, little Rosie, that finally persuaded you?"

Rosie raised an eyebrow. "You will get no such answer from me, Kale Brennan. I might have fallen victim to your convincing arguments, but I will not be helping you corrupt my sisters and friends in the same manner in future."

"You make it sound as though I've asked you to be an accomplice -- "

Rosie raised an eyebrow. "Did you not?"

" -- in something illegal."

"Just because it is legal, doesn't mean it is right. I don't think father would like it ... "

"No, but it will be quite funny."

Rosie couldn't help but smile, "I suppose it will be funny." A pause. "But Kale ... Cassimir is our brother now. Perhaps we ought to try to be a little nicer to him, then maybe he might be nicer to us."

"Perhaps to you and your sisters but ... not to us," The light in Kale's eyes darkened at the thought of what he was to say next. He had decided to spare Rose the details of what had prompted this latest attack against Cassimir, but the words tumbled out, just the same. "Yesterday he had little Charlie Reaves whipped just because he forgot to relay the message that he wanted his horse ready to ride in the afternoon."

"Why did you not say so at the first? I would have eagerly agreed to help you if I had known that. The punishment does not fit the crime. In fact, I think that now he is getting off rather easy, considering." She put her hands on her hips, "Really, Kale, is stealing his clothes and replacing them with Lord Cormac's really the best you can do?"

Kale laughed, the lightness in his eyes returning, "I think I've becoming a rather bad influence on you, Lady Roisin. For I can think of no worse punishment than having to prance around dressed in the ridiculous things that Cormac Calleary chooses to wear."

Home is Ahead | Kale & Rosie

Kale was absolutely, positively not supposed to be this close to Malconaire.

It had been his desire to speak with Eithne that drew him so close to the house and it was both nostalgia and a feeling of homesickness he didn't know he had been feeling that kept him wandering about the familiar grounds far longer than he had intended.

Ronan would have killed him if he had known what he was up to. Such careless (and frivolous!) wanderings was not worth the risk he posed to himself, the resistance, and the Malconaires if he was discovered. But Kale was nothing if not confident in his abilities to evade detection and perhaps -- having now spoken to Eithne -- there might have been a small part of him that wished to speak to the other girls, too.

If you were to ask him, he would have told you that his encounter with Roisin Malconaire had been planned by him, but the truth was, that she managed to take him unawares and before he knew it, he came face to face with the youngest Malconaire.

He had strayed far too close to the house and was shifting through the laundry that had been hung out to dry. He thought himself well hidden amongst the sheets and blankets that nearly touched the ground, as he tried to catch a glimpse inside the house.

Suddenly, the sheet in front of him was pulled down and none other than little Rosie Malconaire was behind it. Although, he realized, she was not really so little now ...

He hid his own surprise at seeing her behind his grin, "You've grown white as the sheet in your hands," He laughed, "Like you've just seen a ghost."

HAHA, omg!!! I love Cormac ~accidentally~ being an ally salfjsalfjslfdj It feels so on brand!!

Also, I feel like Kale is probably hanging around Lorcan even more now since he is both a) helping sneak Eabha back to Calleary and b) probs comes to check on all the peeps they helped save who are currently hiding in Cormac's basement ..... so he probably ~does~ just pretend he's a servant half the time to move more freely around Lorcan! (He just has to avoid Aine since she is the only one who doesn't know he has a reason to sneak around there/isn't in the resistance/knows he's not a servant lasjfsaljfs)

I ... can actually see Kale now just kinda coming in and checking on Cormac sometimes and like ~playing the servant part~ just to continue to cement this idea that Cormac has that he IS his servant ... but also the bonus is that Finn does not waste this opportunity to further gaslight his brother

Yes! So Kale ~was arrested for theft and honestly, I feel like he probs only steals from Varmonts/Varmont loyalists/Varmont soldiers, so he could have even tried to steal ~from Tristan or Godfrey or some of their men, tbh???! Either way, I can totally see Tristan having been the one to arrest him, ha!

Honestly, Tristan and Sebastian are both probably the most likeable Varmonts but Sebastian has ruined his chances for Kale to like him because he's "after" Aoife and while Kale doesn't know about Tristan's feels for Eithne, he DID arrest him ..... so ..... Kale's not a huge fan!

Honestly, he probably just knows him as Amira's bro and he'd be a bit more neutral towards him, except for the fact that he is the captain of the king's guard and like, can you not??!? I'm sure he has heard good things about him from Ciara, but he also thinks that Ciara's good opinions of the ppl connected to her family are probs a bit skewed, so that doesn't really help his case as far as Kale is concerned!

I just wanna say that Kale is here to absolutely troll Rian!!!

He does not like him, has never liked him, and is determined that he never will like him!! He's a v sad excuse of an astairan and kale feels like he should be ashamed of himself!!! not to mention, he's claimed lorcan and poor eabha has to live with him?!?!?!? no thank you!!!

So I was actually thinking that maybe they have crossed paths before perhaps at Lorcan?? Like we have established that Kale goes there still to see eabha when he can and perhaps rian has caught him before??? but like kale has either pretended to be a servant or villager at lorcan or something???

Anyway, he is v reckless, especially when he is angry, and I feel like just seeing Rian makes Kale's blood boil and I feel like he has def been embolden on more than 1 occasion to just go up to him and pretend to be someone else so he could like put himself in a position where he could at least mess w/ rian's day somehow and just sorta trusts that rian is never gonna recognize him from his wanted posters (until 1 day he does!)

And it'd probably just be stuff like giving/selling him bad food/giving him horrible directions/giving him false hope he knows how to get beneath lorcan and watch him waste hours looking for a secret door that is definitely NOT there

But yeah ... honestly even if he did recognize him, I can still see Kale being stupid and then just like confronting him and then pulling off some stupid stunt to escape rian and his guards and he is literally just doing it for a) a laugh b) to humiliate and frustrate rian but at the end of the day, he's just being a mORON but he thinks he is the smdh and this is probably (no joke) how kale dies

hi, soo! ngl i don't have a ~ton of thoughts on these two bc tbqh idk that rian pays that much attention to the servant class!! :/ like, he def recognizes ppl and such, he's not like roderick or cormac! but he was raised w v strict social rules and yeah i think he was frankly trained ~to ignore them and just go on speaking to other ppl of 'importance,' even when they were standing in the corner etc and yeah i think he thinks that's how its ~meant to be basically alkdsjfksjdfj

Let Me Be Your Guide | Kale & Eabha

Kale supposed he oughtn't have been surprised when Eabha asked him to sneak her into Hanthom. He supposed it had come to him as a shock that she would risk being caught with him while undermining Godfrey's authority all in one swoop, but it only took him another second to realize that she had real love and concern for the people of Hanthom and she meant to see, with her own eyes, how they were and deliver what she could to ease any burdens they were facing without the Callearies to preside over them.

Eabha Calleary would do anything for her family, he knew, but she would always do anything for her people.

They had arranged to meet on the outskirts of Lorcan, so Kale did not have to risk being caught by any of Rian's men who patrolled the area. Eabha, herself, was not likely allowed to leave on her own, but it would be a far better thing for her to feign that she had only been out for a walk than to be caught sneaking about with an escaped felon.

He knew it was her as soon as he caught her figure moving through the darkness. She wore a dark colored cloak to hide her features, but Kale thought he would still know her anywhere.

"It's regrettable you never did anything this fun when we were children," He teased, coming out of his hiding place in the shadows. Not that she never did anything fun, but she was certainly one of the more responsible ones who were always trying to reel in the younger, more wild ones.

"I think it also probably speaks to why you've jumped from responsible eldest sister to my, quite literally, partner-in-crime. I don't think it can be healthy -- never getting into any real trouble when you are younger. If in the end, you are just as wild as me." He winked, "Makes you wonder what all of that restraint was really for."

This situation was certainly not the same as the sort of trouble that they used to get up to when they were younger, but Kale couldn't resist the prospect of teasing her about her newfound life of crime, when Eabha Calleary had always been one of the last people Kale would have ever expected to do anything that was against the law.

But then, Roderick Varmont had changed so much about the way things were in Astaira, he thought.

Just then, he caught the makings of a smile upon her lips and he felt his heart skip a beat knowing that it was for him. It was good to know, he supposed, that the Varmonts had not managed to change everything ...
