there’s something so personal in the way that the light of his life ( whether she was aware that she was the light of his life, is a question for another day ) attempts to make rick look presentable by tucking in his shirt. her hands, so gentle in the way that she touches him, on any part of his body was enough to give the man a heart attack but he was still standing, albeit holding his breath as she does so.

he watches her with a lovesick smile on his lips and he tries his best to stay still, but he’s restless, and words spill from his lips before he could stop himself. “look at you, you’re goin’ through all of this trouble for little ole me... and who am i kidding? i’ll make a mess outta myself sooner or later, so really, all of this is unneeded.” and rick’s kicking himself the second that he says it, teeth digging into his bottom lip. “not that i don’t appreciate it! i do appreciate it, you’re wonderful help as always, gorgeous.”

guy gets girl, that’s how this story is supposed to end or at least, that was what the adventure sphere had been convinced. you’d think that the adventure sphere would begging the human to let him join her on her next adventure, after all of this time that he’s been praying for a way out, but that isn’t the case. there’s a bittersweet smile on his lips as chell approaches the two corrupted spheres that remain and she places a hand on his arm, knowing that the next adventure is hers and hers alone.

“well, darlin’... you did mighty fine back there, mighty fine. and i mighta had somethin’ to do with it.” rick has to give himself credit where credit is due, of course, and he plucks her hand from his arm to press a kiss to the back of her hand. “i’m afraid that i can’t join you on your next adventure. i know, i know... it’s disappointing...” he has to stay. he doesn’t really know why, but he has this feeling that he has to.

however, rick wasn’t going to leave it at that, his grip on her hand tightening as he tugs her closer to him and gives her his most charming of smiles. “but how about a lil kiss for the road, huh? for old time’s sake?”

she steps into the hallway and takes a second to look at herself in the mirror, taking a lock of her hair and pushing it behind her ear before she approaches her front door. she knows who to anticipate on her doorstep, but what she doesn’t anticipate is to open the door and be greeted by a bouquet of flowers. duke’s smile is charming, as always, and her breath is taken away by combination before her.

“i... hi, duke.” a bright and breathless laugh leaves becky as she forces herself to say something, taking a step towards him and her hands reaching out to wrap around the ones that held the bouquet.  “it’s been... so long since i’ve gotten flowers from someone and these are-- thank you, i should be saying thank you.” oh, she’s rambling now, isn’t it? she tries to salvage this, the smile on her lips turning into something a little bit more teasing.

“that is, if i’m not mistaken and these pretty flowers are, in fact, for me...”

one. one guard was too good to be true and that familiar feeling of fear settles as more enter the room. there were a lotta guys and although he trusts xander, he knows that he can’t let him do all of the dirty work for him. what the hell was he supposed to do if xander somehow manages to get himself knocked out, huh? run for it? he could, but he wasn’t going to.

ethan wasn’t going to run away from this, not after what that bastard did to his girls. it’s his fault that they’re gone and with that thought, that feeling of fear quickly turns to anger. hands run through his hair, pushing it back and behind his ears as he straightens from behind xander, taking a firm stance.

“alright, what’s the plan, tough guy?" ethan swallows the lump in his throat as his eyes flicker from the special agent to their enemies, trying to find something, anything, that will give him the upper hand here. “do you plan on takin’ them all out by yourself?" hands push the sleeves of his leather jacket up his arms, before balling into fists. “you’ve got five seconds before i do somethin’ so fuckin’ stupid that you’re gonna regret bringing me along.”

you didn’t have to be a smart to notice the little amount of food they were given at this point. it was in fact a wide topic around the sleep hall as they were handed out fresh bread and a single egg. ali’s eyes scanned over the few people he had gotten to know and his eyes landed on one particular. standing in front of sang woo, his hands which were holding the bread, reached out to him. ’ sir, please take this. you’ve been nothing but kind to me. please take it as a thank you. ’ @forwardmoved liked.

the rations that they were given were laughable, but it was better than nothing, right? it was better than nothing and yet he felt his appetite slowly fade away into nothingness, as a quiet anger bubbles up inside of him for getting himself in this situation in the first place. sang woo’s head and eyes lift as ali addresses him, his jaw setting as he does so. this kindness was going to kill ali, if he wasn’t careful. “no.” he answers at first, his voice quiet. “it’s yours, you need it.”

he had sacrificed himself for the greater good and so he, like all of the others, will fade into nothingness in a sea of black and white. and she, the queen of white, simply watches. she has immeasurable powers like her brothers, but she hesitates to save him, she hesitates to meddle in these timelines as much as her brothers did. she knows that she shouldn’t play favorites, she has watched millions of people die throughout her existence, but he had saved one of the girls very near and dear to her heart. and she was thankful.

webby doesn’t make her physical presence known to him, but she is everywhere and nowhere as she addresses him, her voice soft.  she was sure that wiggog y'wrath would throw a hissy fit if he knew that she was meddling, but then again, she was inconsequential as his powers grow.

“you’re out of time.” she wants to help him, but she doesn’t want to give him false hope. she’s also sure that he’s aware of the fact, but she struggled to find the right words to say. it was only when she was around hannah foster, nuclear power plant of psychic energy trapped in a little girl’s body, that she knew the right words to say. “next time. things might be better, next time... or so i hope.”

she thinks he’s brave. and she couldn’t be more wrong. he wasn’t brave, but he was reckless. he was willing to do whatever it took to keep himself afloat in this dog-eat-dog world and because he found himself liking the foster sisters so damn much, well, it meant that he was willing to do anything for them as well. when hannah says this, however, a flicker of a smile appears on his lips as he tries to keep the image that she had created for him: brave. 

“you’re in luck, kid, no one asked for another ethan green.” it isn’t one of his finest jokes, but while waiting for a reaction that will never come, his eyes soften and he clears his throat. “hey, you don’t gotta be, you know that? bein’ a little scared means that all of those organs inside of ya are workin’ properly, it’s natural, and it ain’t a bad thing. bein’ brave comes with time and it ain’t a race, banana. i swear that you’ll get there one day.”

“is that what that was?” ethan green is not equipped to handle this sort of thing and whether or not she was actually serious, he wasn’t sure, but he tries his best to immediately make up for it. his hands are shoved into the pockets of his leather jacket and his shoulders are hunched forward, a serious yet sympathetic look painted across his face. “hey, uh... listen. i know life’s rough, yeah? i mean... you know that, of course you know that. but life’s worth stickin’ around for, don’t matter how little the little things are, you gotta hold onto those guys.”

He was sure there must’ve been a time in his life where he felt happier, or felt luckier than he did in this moment - damn him though, he couldn’t think of any. It’s been hard, finding his footing in this town, trying to be apart of the community, and trying to actual do his job and make a difference. He hasn’t had time for anything personal - but to hear that laugh more, Duke figured he could make time.

“Day after tomorrow.” He said, nodding his head and trying so hard not to grin like a dork. “It’s a date then, darlin’.” His accent, which he often tried so hard to diminish, had it’s way of slipping out on some words; as it did with that term of endearment. 

“… It’s a date then, Becky.” He said, slightly softer, tucking the phone number safely away into his pockets. He wanted this date to work out, but even if it didn’t end in any romantic favor - Duke believed that Becky was someone worth getting to know. “You can call me Duke.”

He somehow managed to look away from Becky, to catch a glimpse of the time on the clock. “I gotta go, duty calls.” He stepped away from the desk a bit, a soft smile not leaving his face. “I hope the rest of your day goes well, Becky. Start thinking of your favorite place to eat. See you the day after tomorrow?” 

darlin’... did he call her darlin’? she’s speechless as she blinks, useless as she tries to process all that had happened in the matter of seconds. and his accent. it was faint, but it was there, and the thought finally occurred to her that maybe he wasn’t from around here. it would make sense, because how the nurses talk about him now, she was sure that she would’ve heard of him years ago.

becky slowly but surely returns to her senses and her focus returns to duke again, acutely aware of the way that she feels her cheeks burn at her name spoken so softly. “duke.” his name on her lips is equally as soft, a gentle nod of her head in response to his official introduction to her.

it’s a shame that he has to leave, but duty calls, and becky’s still sitting at the nurse’s desk at st. damien’s where she, too, should be focusing on her work. she nods again and she makes sure that his business is secure in one of her pockets of her scrubs before she takes a deep breath. it was time to return to reality, wasn’t it?

“it’s a date.” she agrees with an eagerness as she tries not to stare as he leaves. she’s sure that there’s some paperwork she should be doing or something along the lines, hands reaching out absentmindedly to do so. “it’ll be tough, but i think i’ll be able manage it. and i hope that you have a wonderful rest of your day too, duke.”
