Going into my own rant regarding how some of the fandom treats Newt and his sexuality because surprise, it’s not just here, no;

People writing Newt x Fem! content is especially true for other places like AO3 and Wattpad. (TikTok too, but that’s a different beast) and I’ve always been one to say;

NEWT DOESN’T LIKE GIRLS!

I have told so many people this and their response typically is always; “Don’t like, don’t read.”

Like I get that. I’m not a greenie to fandom culture, I’ve been around for a long while, probably as far back as when the Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom crossover was still a widespread thing.

I know fandom culture.

But this isn’t one of those “Don’t like, don’t read.” situations. This is a blatant dismissal of the fact that Newt is gay.

Another response I get;

“In this he’s Bi/Sraight.”

That is gay erasure by straight washing or changing a character to be more straight just for fan fiction.

Which is wrong.

Going into “It’s just Fanfiction.” Which I also get;

In honour of pride month and me seeing one too many x fem reader fics on this website, I'd like to reiterate something to the Maze runner fandom.

Newt is a gay man.

We get it. Thomas Brodie Sangster was hot as Newt, I don't disagree. But OH MY GOD, personally it really disgusts me how much people ignore his sexuality for the sake of their own desires.

To clarify, I in no way want you guys to stop shipping yourselves/sonas/ocs with fictional characters, I think that's chill and totally cool

But PLEASE, stop ignoring the fact that Newt is a CANON GAY MAN because you want him not to be. This has been getting on my nerves for a while. You can try and walk around the topic all you want, but point blank, you're *kinda* being homophobic here. You're ignoring a character's sexuality and that's not okay.

If Newt was a real person, would you do the same? If Newt somehow existed in real life, and was a gay man (because HE IS A GAY MAN), how would you act? Would you ignore his sexuality?

Idk, I felt the need to talk about this. Its been getting on my nerves.

LET. GAY. CHARACTERS. BE. GAY.

HOT PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO NOT BE INTERESTED IN YOUR GENDER. YOU NEED TO RESPECT THAT, FICTIONAL OR NOT.
