college advice : Stuff you need when moving out

When I was in the fifth grade mom bought new glass-cups to replace the old ones, then she threw the old ones away, even though there was nothing wrong with them, no chips, still had every glass, they matched. I saw them repackaged in their original box at the top of the trash can and pulled them out, they had even been clean. She looked at me and asked what a 10 year old needed with glasses, and I said I wouldn’t be ten forever. Now nearly 12 years later we both use those same glasses since we moved in together after her divorce. I want to talk about literal stuff today.  If youre going to be living on your own, or with someone else your age, chances are you (or your room mate) are going to need stuff: dishes, cups, silverware, cook ware (mesuring cups/baking pan/ pots & pans), that outlet strip you used to use for your old now-dead desk top computer, bath towels, shower rod & curtain, cleaning supplies. Are you going to have wooden floors now? then don’t throw out those slippers that you never used while living at your parent’s carpeted house.  Top things I didn’t realize were important until I lived on my own:

tupperware - put it in the fridge, the microwave, take it to work/college, put non-food stuff in it organize make up/art supplies/ect. Make sure you have a few that are water proof, so you dont end up with pear juice on you or in your back pack.

meat thermometer - Look at this steak I bought on sale, how long does this go into the oven? … I think I burnt it…

Toilet plunger - When you need it you’ll hate yourself for not having it. ‘Nuff said.

small/medium clothes hamper - When this is full its time to do laundry, thats about as much clothes that will fit in a dorm/apartment/small washer. Other things its good for, makes carrying groceries -and other things similar- up steps a lot easier.

scotch tape/duck tape - put the cover back on your note book, patch up the hole in the plastic of the cord your moms dog bit though,fix up the hole in your shoe, cause new shoes are expensive. Even hold together your car.

a few tools - screw drivers, flash light, hammer, measuring tape. -power outage, the batteries in the remote go dead, you pool money together with your room mates for a couch and a big tv but is it going to fit?

pens and paper - to do lists, maps, notes (my food, don’t eat it!)

Microwave- On that budget, I would rather live without a fridge!

Thumb tacks/push pins - easier to use then nails. Great to hang stuff on the wall, pictures, curtains, cords. Plus a cork board is great for keeping track of bills, important notes, letters, or recipes.

Shovel/broom & dust pan/vacuum -  Living is messy. One of my friends broke their bean bag chair, and the vacuum made it so much easier to clean.

If youre moving out soon there’s no time like the present to stock up on necessitates, what you buy doesn’t have to be top dollar either, if you see metal or plastic things at garage sales pick them up, wash them with a little bleach to make sure their clean and make a box for these items, if your parents replace something that’s still usable, maybe you can have that, an old toaster or microwave that doesn’t match their kitchen is perfect for yours. If your moving out in a few years, buy stuff right after the back-to-college season is over, cause all that stuff will be on clearance. If its every day stuff wait til you see it on clearance. What was the biggest item you forgot to bring?
