Losing Will Broke Mike Long Before He Knew

Mike didn’t become the way just because of internalized homophobia. He acted like that because he was gone for Will and kept losing him.

In Season 1, when Will went missing, Mike completely gone crazy. He didn’t just worry he lost it. Even Dustin asked,

“Do you think it’s smart we’re going to the place Will went missing without weapons or anything?”

But Mike didn’t care. He just knew he had to find him. Finding Eleven gave him hope — not because of her, but because she became the a hope to find Will. That’s why he defended her the whole time.

And every time he asked El, “What is wrong with you?”, behind that question was a boy losing his inner storm. Feeling like he was failing Will. And just when he thought he was about to find him… he saw his body.

Then, there was hope again: Will’s voice through the walkie-talkie. Mike softened towards Eleven again, because the hope returned. It’s actually crazy how he “just knew” Will was alive.

And finally… they got him back.

Season 2

But this was the third time Mike almost lost Will. And this time, they had the “ shared trauma” And something shifted. Mike’s feelings grew stronger. His behavior , the way he looked at Will, the way he cared had always been different. But maybe this was the first time even he felt how deep it was. He was terrified. And maybe, at the Snow Ball, when he danced with that random girl… maybe something clicked. Maybe he felt the pain of losing him. Maybe pain of knowing he could never have something he can’t even admit he wants.

Then El came back. And her return saved him from the guilt. (both guilt of the way he feels and guilt of failing El herself) She helped him escape the overwhelming relief and pain. So,he attached himself to her. He chose to perform.

That’s how we got Season 3 Mike who tried to push Will away not because he didn’t care, but because he cared too much. He was scared of losing him again. (“If she’s pushing you away, it’s probably just because she’s scared of losing you. Just like you’re scared of losing her.”)

But by pushing Will away… Mike felt like he lost him again. (What if you want to join another party) And then six months of barely talking. Six months of Mike realizing. By Season 4, he just couldn’t do it anymore.

Because “Hawkins isn’t the same without him.”

(Mike isn’t the same without him.)

And that’s why I believe Mike fell first. Will is intuitive. If he fell like this it’s because something in Mike gave him hope. Sure, Will developed feelings because their bond was special. But I think it was Mike who made it special in the first place.

I’m not saying they’re not naturally perfect for each other they are. They form the most beautiful bond. But the way Mike initiated things… that’s probably what gave Will the courage to fall. Mike became Will’s safe place, his home.

And honestly… they were probably unknowingly a couple already. Long before either of them realized it.
