-deep breath, steepling fingers-
As of Sept 13th 2021 there have been not one but 2 posts in the last four days, gone viral, fabricating screenshots from a blend of external sources including falsified mainstream news stories, alleging that public figures were caught engaging with Omegaverse content: Billie Joe Armstrong, and now Ted Cruz.
And the problem I have with both of these posts is pretty much exclusively that the OPs created them as a “gotcha, you should have clicked the links and read my post”
Benign disinformation (accidentally misrepresenting a situation and having a post on the topic go viral, failing to fact-check and making a genuine mistake which you sincerely apologize for and try to correct) is one thing. Actively, intentionally producing disinformation, which may never be recognized as such by the vast majority of people who engage with it, is an entirely different ethical can of worms.
I do genuinely believe it causes net harm to create “gotcha” posts so you can point at people in the notes and laugh, or make separate, irony-laden commentary about how you didn’t expect the post to go viral (uh huh), even if you did also do it partly to highlight issues with the state of the internet these days. I hope that people who do this kind of trolling grow out of it, but I think we do need to have bigger conversations about how situations like this - where the OPs admit they were trying to “teach a lesson about the importance of fact-checking” - are actively counterproductive.
It isn’t a sincere attempt at teaching media or internet literacy; it is virtually indistinguishable from behaviours which are intended to cause greater harm; and especially on a site that acts like an unfiltered copy-machine where posts are decontextualized from the second “post” is clicked and where checking the notes is actively dis-incentivized by user behaviour and site culture, I think there are infinitely better ways to teach the same lesson while respecting the people it’s aimed at.
At best people who fall for it will laugh at themselves, or sigh and say “I wanted to believe”. At worst, we entrench a specific set of behaviours and mindsets even further, or rely on shame to try and influence behaviour… which doesn’t work.
There’s funny-haha trolling and then there’s this kind of stuff. It’s not a responsible way to teach information or internet literacy. We, collectively, can do better.

A PSA for anyone getting the Covid vaccine, just so you know what to expect, some people experience no side effects, but it’s also not uncommon for people to feel like they have cold/flu-like symptoms for a day or two after getting the vaccine. For most people the symptoms are slightly worse after the second shot. The hospital I work at is recommending that employees get the vaccine the day before they have a day or two off. They have provided some extra PTO days in part because of this. I took a day off after each shot and was glad I did. This should not discourage anyone from getting the vaccine, but is just information to keep in mind when scheduling you or your loved ones vaccines. I highly recommend OTC pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil, or their generics. Tylenol relieved all of my symptoms. There’s no prize for toughing it out, just take them and they will make it so much easier.  For me, I got my first shot in the morning and about 14 hours later I started to feel muscle aches and pains, especially in my neck. I went to bed and then woke up feeling worse; headache, lightheadedness, a temp of 99.2 (higher than normal, but not technically a fever), and worse muscle aches and pains. I started taking Tylenol and I felt much better. The symptoms lasted for about 24 hrs. After my second shot, I felt symptoms much faster, about 6 hrs after the shot, I kept up with the Tylenol a little more aggressively this time and it kept the symptoms at bay, still wouldn’t have wanted to run a 5k or give a big work presentation or anything. Over all I would say the symptoms last about 36 hrs.  And I feel like I have to put this in here, just in case it crosses people’s minds, “What’s the point of getting the vaccine if it’s just going to make you sick?” You may feel sick, but you are not infected. You feel sick because the vaccine has “tricked” your immune system into thinking you are infected so that it starts to produce antibodies, but you are not actually infected. The symptoms from the vaccine last a day or two. In contrast Covid can last for weeks or months. The symptoms from the vaccine will not land you in the hospital or, more importantly, the morgue like Covid can. Also, you won’t be able to transmit the virus or the symptoms to anyone around you.  Hopefully being informed can lead to us all making smart choices that help us get out of this pandemic as soon as possible.

INCREDIBLY good concept that came to me in a dream last night: being a kinnie in your twenties being considered cringe, but for the exact opposite reason that it is irl
like *middle-aged person voice* "oh, you're only 25? pfft, you can't possibly know yourself well enough. come back when you're 40."
