Can we just talk about how fucking BADLY Vergil was hurt and basically broken on every aspect (identity, mentally, physically, hell, probably in soul/spirit as well,) that he HAS become a complete hurricane in his search for the one constant, grounding person in his life to try and reach out to despite all the noise and roar of his own storm?

How broken you must be, to approach someone at the eye of your hurricane and plead for help, in such a vulnerable state - V, fully human in this moment, terrified to some degree and afraid to even look at his brother, failing a joke probably gave him a heart attack internally.

In DMC 5, we see every raw, vulnerable, exposed nerve in their own forms brought to manifestation by one man's shatterage - one he didn't even know he would survive in the first place, dragging himself to his childhood home so if he did perish, at least it would be near some semblance of the family he had left.

He only went to Dante when even that failed.

Vergil was dead-set on having SOMETHING change, whether it meant splitting apart entirely, or ending it right there.

And if he had died, no one would likely ever know, least of all Dante, unless he could sense his withering presence by some miracle.

Not to be a huge sap or anything but when the last chapter of Visions of V first released and I read “What makes me human will keep my heart safe” it felt like I’d just been hit by a train. V’s “heart” is the book of poems from his childhood, and Vergil gives it to Nero for safekeeping, meaning his son is what makes him human.

You know what I find a fun background tidbit?

Vergil's hair.

Or the fact that he only spikes it up because of Dante. At least in the manga.

Like, we know he used to keep his hair spiky before the fire. Either this was something Eva did for him or he did it himself to differentiate from Dante.

But then the attack happens and he loses his spikes for the hair-down style his brother is known for. And Vergil does not put it back up again as far as we can see.

Not until the dmc3 manga that is.

There we still see him walking around with his hair down, even meeting Arkham like this.

You wanna know when he starts spiking it up again?

Well, it's right at the moment Enzo confirms to Vergil that Dante is alive and in the city!

Look at him being all dramatic!

So yeah, if you ignore what the games provide in this regard, Vergil probably kept his hair down during the entire decade he and Dante thought each other dead. Maybe it was Vergil's tribute to his younger twin or it was just him not seeing a point in styling his hair like he used to, because who he was supposed to set himself apart from was already dead.

And because of that, as soon as Dante is confirmed to be around still, he's got reason to do so again. Least of all to not be mistaken for his brother by more drunken people xD

One thing I've always enjoyed about Vergil is that the games make you like him and root for him as a character... but not because he's right. It's not because he's noble. It's not even because he's traumatized. It's because he's Dante's brother.

Vergil is kind of terrible. He's done a lot of terrible things. The game doesn't even try to dispute that. You are not supposed to see Vergil as a heroic figure. Yet we still root for him because Dante, our PoV character, roots for him. Dante loves his brother. He wants his brother to succeed. We see how Vergil's absence crushes Dante. He never truly gets over it.

To Dante, Vergil is the person you love even though sometimes you just can't stand them, and maybe despite the fact that they've hurt you, because they're so important to you that you can't imagine life without them. He is the person you watch destroy themselves over and over, knowing there's nothing you can do to stop it, and you feel a piece of yourself break every single time the cycle repeats. Even if we, as players, may not see that or feel that for Vergil (at least, not right away), it's clear that Dante does.

And I can't emphasize enough how relatable and human that experience is. I think we've all been there in one way or another with someone in our lives. If we haven't, then I'm sure we've all watched a friend or family member go through that with someone they've loved.

He really doesn't need to be anything grander than that. He's not secretly right or noble. In fact, he's dead wrong about a lot. Yet we're still on Vergil's side because when he overcomes, when he finds his peace, when he becomes the person Dante hoped he could be, then Dante finds peace as well.

And we all want a world where the people we love can find their peace, and we can find our peace with them.

I’m so tired of people talking about Dante like he’s this morally dubious guy who doesn’t care about humanity or innocent people suffering. Like there’s plenty of morally dubious characters in DMC but he isn’t one of them.

Dante is described in the following ways by characters and even devs:

-Having a gentle heart.

-Having a gentle soul.

-A kind devil.

-Having nothing but kindness in his eyes for humans

-Says he became a hunter because he hates seeing innocent people get hurt.

-Fights on the side of justice.

-The most noble of souls.

Bro is the biggest goodie two shoes imaginable. He just doesn’t see himself that way because he blames himself for tragedies like Nell’s death.
