/ FINAL STATEMENT / W8 D3
My final outcome has materialised as a series of VHS Sleeve artworks belonging in a fictional universe I have imagined. I have conjured up concepts for four fictional near-future London street gangs, taking inspiration from 1979’s ‘The Warriors’ and many other elements. I had been looking initially at the ‘freaks’ of society (those who don’t fit within the boundaries of what is considered normal to the mainstream) and this lead me to looking at body modification enthusiasts who prefer to emulate an animal form, eccentric’s from fashion and media who blend their appearance with art, odd sub-cultures and so on and so forth. This research, experimentation and much thought over my subject led me on to look at quite the opposite of identity and individuality. Groups of people who all look the same, dress the same etc *social clones*. I began investigating the meaning of uniform and social uniform , the stereotypes and recognisable social character types that people choose to adopt in order to abandon the mainstream and belong outside the boundaries, but within a category rather than in their own. So I started looking at gangs (real and ficitonal), their uniforms and the bold and recognisable clothing which is so synonymous with the culture and emphasises the collective identity.
For this FMP I switched to using a digital sketchbook for the first time which has been a very positive and interesting experience. After using physical sketchbooks forever previously, I grew tired of the tedious nature of cutting out and sticking lots of images only to waste a great amount of time - I found that since I enjoy working digitally anyways it would prove as a much more effective and efficient way to work. Gathering research and organising and presenting my work ended up becoming a lot easier due to the flexibility of adaptability of working on digital PDF sheets. I also found it very helpful that I could easily go back and make edits or create additions to work where there was gaps.
I have managed to create a lot more complete kind of project during this FMP, I feel like with the help of action plans and organising a structure and process to follow has really helped me come to reach a final outcome in a way that I am enthusiastic and happily satisfied about. Through researching many different subjects relating to my theme, and exploring as many different platforms as possible (film, culture, art, photography etc) I had an advantage because of the very broad scope of information for idea’s and concepts for where I might be able to take my project.
I found group tutorials to be quite useful as a moment to reflect outside of yourself on what you have done so far, and gain some constructive advice and ideas from our colleagues. I gained so many very useful points of reference and subjects to research from my tutor and classmates during tutorials. Speaking to my tutors one-on-one was very beneficial for me because just simply talking through the course of my project, helpfully reflected my ideas back to me and cleared confusion with conflicting ideas.
I should be more correct with following/ writing a useful and structured weekly plan, writing a list of things to have done in order to ensure I have no gaps and my project has a rhythm which is essential for it to develop effectively and reach a conclusion in a complete way. I also learned from this FMP, in future to  properly plan shoots in advance, because I feel like so many ideas escaped me from failing to note them down and important elements to my concepts were lost because of a lack of organisation - I know that in future, I must note down every aspect of the shoot I have thought out; garments, hair, makeup,  casting, location etc. So that when time comes to shooting there is a lack of obstacles and the whole procedure is much more swift and successful.

I got all four of the ‘Horror’ series t-shirts printed, one of each, unfortunately the company who were printing them for me messed up the sizing, although I sent correct and precise measurements - When they arrived the graphics were all far smaller than I intended and a pretty much different layout than on the display template’s for my designs, which was frustrating since I couldn’t use them at all I feel. So I will not really have time to shoot them for my ‘Hackney/ Horror’s’ VHS sleeve cover. The ‘Brixton/ Boys’ bloodstain t shirts I designed, however came perfectly and I was really happy with the quality and finish of the vinyl print on the heavy cotton tee shirt, which was essential for me, so I was quite happy and satisfied with the outcome of these - I have had four in total printed. I think they looked incredible with black overalls (a uniform I have in mind for the crew) and I am also thinking of shooting this concept in a butchers, if I can find one who will let me, also taking some pictures in front of hanging meat. I think the colours and imagery from the butchers backing my tee’s will create such a strong visual.

I have been designing and drafting up styling ideas with each crew in mind, keeping in mind ideas about colour-coordination, brand adoption, weapon choice, hair and makeup and also accessories. I have come to a final concept for four individual crews of which two are affiliates and the others rivals (also affiliates) - for which I will create four final posters serving as VHS Sleeves for each’s own fictional ‘film’ or ‘episode’ where they co-exist in this cinematic universe.. I have also been making and altering garments in a DIY fashion to further push the dystopian narrative I wish to be underlying in this world I am creating. I found a number of  bright coach jackets in a charity shop, and I feel like they remind me of some kind of sad, official uniform (…p.e teaching assistant, geography teacher for example) which I thought was interesting, so I began drawing and doodling on these using uni-posca acrylic pens - I was quite happy with the outcome of these pens on the strange jacket material which I didn’t have much hope for, they came out nice and bright if the colour was contrasting or I if i used the silver which applied so nicely with a great metallic finish on anything. I have also designed branded ‘gang’ t shirts for each crews dress code, keeping in mind which ones would even be organised enough to do so. I am getting these printed on heavy cotton tee shirt’s using vinyl print for a more professional and vivid finish, especially since some of these designs are somewhat intricate and multi-coloured.

I have started researching and collecting as much vintage VHS sleeve artworks I can find, I found that the artwork in horror was most visually interesting, personally, featuring surreal and out of this world illustrations and bold visuals, containing images and type so dense and saturated yet curated in such a well-constructed way). I am looking at the typography and graphics (which is almost always the most striking and bold - usually appearing on all three parts of the sleeve: front back and spine), various layout / design styles, and image placements and so on to gain as much concrete visual information as possible in order that when creating my own version it is sure that it will appear credible and successfully emulate the look and feel of VHS art I so want to achieve - I will pretty much be collaging using different elements I like from the posters I have selected, also making sure to implement and follow the right rules, including whatever ‘corporate’ and legal information you might see on a real video case.

Fashion loves to categorise us; during this final major project I wish to begin a search into the weird and wonderful in an attempt to acknowledge the different people; explore those who don’t fit within the boundaries of what is considered ‘normal’ or who aren’t widely accepted by mainstream society. Although fashion magazines and the industry in general claim to celebrate individuality (i-D…Dazed…etc) they often exploit the individuals who don’t, or cannot fit within societies standards of ‘beauty’ and in so doing, diminish the beauty of these individuals. It will be interesting to document and investigate these people, and also the relationships we people have to each other and those we co-exist with. I begin my research into culture, media, and human behaviour in a deeper search to understand the meaning of ‘freak’ in order to gain an understanding of all that is weird and wonderful. I think if I investigate deeper into the connotations of this word and the key themes related I will have a broader knowledge of many aspects of culture and other materials which will be my tool in creating substance for my project; analysing and reflecting on the abnormal.

Through my research on film and costume design, I had also been looking at the VHS sleeve artworks for these films - I remember as a child being so fascinated with the images on these posters when taking them out of their videotape cases, and ever since, the visual aesthetic has stayed with me and exercises a compelling nostalgia inside me. This has given me the idea to create VHS sleeve artwork posters for my fictional street gangs so they belong within a fictional cinematic universe of mine. I feel like it will be such an interesting and engaging challenge, really presenting and concluding my project in a very satisfying and personal way.
