A little trivia about my artwork of Haymitch and Effie "Silver Springs"

We know from Suzanne Collins that Haymitch and Lenore Dove were like geese: they mate for life. Grieving, loyal, and steadfast. But even geese, given time and healing, can find love again. I always imagined Haymitch as one of those geese—wounded, a little rough around the edges, but still capable of deep, enduring bonds.

Effie, in contrast, has always felt like a swan to me. Elegant, precise, and solitary in her own way — raised in the structured isolation of the Capitol. And yet, even swans can surprise us.

This piece was inspired in part by a real story: that of Thomas the goose and Henry the swan, an unlikely pair who spent over two decades together in New Zealand. Their bond—devoted, unconventional, and quietly beautiful—stayed with me.

In nature, swans and geese are different species. They can't mate or raise offspring together in the traditional sense. But they can form close, affectionate bonds. They've been known to choose each other when the world around them is small, or when loss and loneliness open unexpected doors.

So I thought: what if Haymitch, the old goose who’d lost his mate, found comfort in a swan like Effie—graceful, surprising, and just as alone?

Sometimes, love doesn't follow rules. Sometimes, it just shows up—and stays.
