hello ! Do you have any advice for a first time snail purchaser?
i’m so happy that you’re interested in the wonderful world of snails! i would love to give you some advice.
getting ready for your new snails
snapartment (snail apartment)
before you adopt any snails, you should prepare a cozy home for them. i keep mine in a 10 gallon aquarium that works perfectly. if you decide to use this aquarium, i highly suggest you also get a cover like this. it’s not the exact one that i have, but i’m sure it will work great. next, you will need some kind of substrate. i use plain soil that i found at walmart for my snails, and i recently bought some coconut soil that i’m going to try out (ill post about that soon!) i also bought two succulents and planted them in the aquarium. succulents are great for snail habitats because they’re cute, they don’t need a lot of water or sun, and snails love to climb them! i found some rocks outside and washed them thoroughly in the sink and placed them in the aquarium as well, along with some glass stones which i also washed. i also added a little terra-cotta pot for them to crawl all over and hide in. the first couple of nights, snails would sleep inside of it, but now it’s old news to them and they just ignore it. i use a spray bottle to regularly mist the aquarium, as snails like their homes to be a little moist. i keep a shallow water dish in their home. it’s important to keep it shallow because snails can drown.
if you are going to get a giant african land snail, there are some different requirements, like a heat mat and a larger tank.
food
for feeding, i highly recommend using a mandoline like this one to prepare food for your snails. it makes thin slices that are easy for them to eat. my snails love carrot the most, but they are also fond of kale, asparagus, and mushrooms. all snaily food should be sliced into a little snaily size!!!
foods that snails can eat:
apple
banana
beans
blueberries
fish food soaked in water
mango
romaine lettuce
potato
dandelion leaves
strawberries (mine are not fond of strawberries, but many snails are!)
plum
cauliflower
cherries
watermelon
tomato
mushrooms
raisins
turnips
cabbage
basil
cuttlebone
boiled egg
and more! google will be your friend.
foods that you shouldn’t feed snails:
salt
salty foods
avocado
onion
grapefruit
lime
lemon
leeks
spinach
rhubarb
parsley
celery
tips about feeding:
the darker the greens, the better! darker greens like kale have more chlorophyll which makes it healthier and more nutritious for snails (and humans!)
avoid cucumber. snails love cucumber, but sometimes they love it so much that they become “picky eaters” and will only want to eat cucumber.
have a designated eating area, above the ground. this makes clean up easier. plus, snails will learn where to go if they are hungry.
wash food before feeding. snails have survival instincts that will keep them from eating food treated with pesticides or chemicals. a lot of our food has those, so always give the food a nice rinse before preparing it
feed your snails once a day, and remove any food that they didn’t eat the next day.
give them clean water each day. they like to bathe, and sometimes the water can fill up with dirt, poop, or even slime. it’s just nice to replenish their water every day.
feed snails, especially babies, a variety of foods each day. otherwise they can become fussy eaters. snail babies who are introduced to many foods opposed to just one or two are healthier and live longer.
notice a soft shell? your snails need more calcium!!
acquiring snails
i adopted my little garden snails from… a garden. i think looking for snails in nature is fun and a Good Time. i haven’t purchased a snail online (yet), but i know there are a few websites, and even shops on ebay, that sell snails. snails are social dudes that like having friends so probably buy more than one.
the snails are HERE
⚡️always wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling snails!! ⚡️
snails have personalities. some are shy while others are little party people. if your snail is not coming out of his shell, don’t worry. try massaging their foot or lightly spraying them with water. give them some time to adjust to their new crib.
if you notice any eggs in the soil, crush them or boil them or freeze them, unless you want hundreds of little cute baby snails that you cannot practically care for but will inevitably become emotionally attached to.
if your snail bubbles up when you try to touch or hold them, don’t worry, they are not dying. this is what snails do when they are anxious. just give your snails some time to get used to you.
one thing i’ve noticed, at least with my snails, is that they will immediately try to escape their new home before settling in. i imagine it like a human being locked in a luxury hotel. at first, they’ll try to get out, because that’s the instinct… but once they realize they’re stuck in there for a while, they’ll probably take advantage of all the amenities like the food and the pool and everything else.
your snail friends will learn who you are and recognize you by your scent. snails are good little sniffers. i’ve had snails who love to be held and pet by me, but bubble up when held by anyone else.
if a snail is sticky-stuck to something, DONT pull on their shell!!! slide the snail along the glass and eventually they will let go. if you must lift a snail, lift from their head because that is the stickiest part and less likely to hurt.
be sure to clean the tank at least once a week.
bonding with the snail dudes
my snails love me. i’m sure your snails will love you as well. at first, they might be scared of you, but soon they’ll recognize you as the big warm thing that gives them food and love. once your snail is comfy with you and likes to crawl on your hand, try petting them. start by gently petting their shell. they love it. you can also gently stroke their little bodies and heads, but don’t poke their eyes please. it hurts them and makes them sad. if you accidentally poke em, don’t worry too much, they’ll forgive you.
SNAILS LOVE CLIMBING. ok this is probably my favorite thing that snails do. when holding a snail, try to putting a finger or two directly above their head. they will get really excited and CLIMB UP ONTO YOUR FINGERS. they just love climbing. one of my little snails, rocco, loves climbing the most. he will lift up his entire head and body in hopes that i will give him a finger to climb on. when i put him back in the tank, he will immediately climb wherever he can, especially onto another snail. be attentive. snails sometimes get really excited about climbing. rocco has fallen off of my hand from trying to climb when there wasn’t anything to climb on.
there is nothing cuter than a snail drinking out of a sink. while i opt to give my snails bottled water 99% of the time, i can’t resist letting them drink tap water every now and then because it is so cute. take your (awake) snail to the sink. turn it on so it is barely running, but not just dripping. have it warm or lukewarm if you can. put your hand close to water. your snail will be very confused for a moment, but then they will drink and shower under the water. it is very good.
cute and good snail quirks
when a snail decides they want to go somewhere, they GO. they don’t rly understand the concept of going around things, they just GO. so, when a snail wants to go, they will climb over literally anything in the way, whether it be the entire water dish, a pile of food, or another snail who is trying to eat or sleep… the snail will just GO until they get to THE THING.
snails are a little dumb. they will learn where the food and water is, and they will get very confused if they go to the spot and there is no food/water. i have come home to find a snail just sitting in the empty water dish, waiting for the water to show up. it’s cute.
i’ve been holding a snail as i’ve typed this and the little dude FELL ASLEEP on my HAND. he trusts me!!!! he trusts me to keep him safe and to stop him from falling. oh my goodness, live tweet, he is just now waking up. he is peeping his little eyes out. i love this snail.
snails can’t hear… but i still tell them i love them bc i need to vocalize it.
snails are most active at night and will eat/drink the most then.
snails keep all their important organs in their shell, so don’t try to remove it or paint it!!
snails can live for YEARS!!!

how is being transracial different from being transgender?
because, while your race is fully contingent on how you were born and is not a socially malleable characteristic, gender is 1) something that is and has been perceived by different cultures in varying ways and is not a constant concept, 2) cannot be defined on a binary established by genetalia (even if intersexism didn't exist, the truth is that there are other factors which also determine gender, including the chemistry of the brain), and 3) is a way for people to define not just their physical appearance, but also their attitudes, their relationships with others, their goals in life, and how they interact with the world around them in a way personal to themselves.
being transracial would mean acknowledging that institutional racism exists and pretending it is something that can be avoided and/or manipulated to one's personal will. the only motivation you would have for being transracial (from the POV of a more-privileged person pretending to be a less-privileged POC; the other way around is rare and typically a result of internalized racism) would be to appropriate the suffering of a group of people. being transgender means that you recognize that most men follow certain aesthetics and behaviors and most women follow certain aesthetics and behaviors, and you've decided that living in the certain set of behaviors that you've been instructed to live by is torturous and untrue to yourself.
what's the difference?
certain races of people may associate themselves with certain characteristics and behaviors, but not because they are naturally intrinsic to all of them, but because some races develop certain cultures as time passes and [typically negative] interactions with other racial groups of people occur. identifying with these characteristics and consequently saying you are of that race without being born of that race is 1) stereotyping an entire racial group of people, and 2) appropriating and taking advantage of a marginalized group and their respective culture and experiences. the other version of being "transracial" would be simply desiring to look like another race, which would also be offensive, as the history of most non-white racial groups includes discrimination based off of their physical appearances, and ignoring that to stereotype a group of people is beyond offensive.
contrarily, men tend to be masculine, and women tend to be feminine. much of this is based off of socialization, but much of it is not negative and simply stems from how men and women tend to interact with the world around them. the difference between this and analyzing races is that much of masculinity and femininity are part of peoples' inherent characteristics and are not defined in the same way that racial cultures are often defined. for instance, while certain behaviors that many women adopt stem from misogyny (e.g. being more likely to let people speak over them, timidness, performing hyperfemininity), to define women by these characteristics would be inaccurate and backwards. women experience as wide of an array of emotions, behaviors, interests, opinions, and thoughts as anyone of any gender. this is because the side effects of misogyny do not affect women in the same way that institutional racism puts certain groups of people in dangerous long-term situations in which people may adapt their cultures as a beacon of strength and endurance.
when a transgender woman says "i am transgender," there is no "culture of women" she is appropriating or taking advantage of. she is recognizing the scale of femininity, masculinity, and androgyny, analyzing them in reference to herself, and adapting who she is to be happier with herself. in no way in that process are women as a whole getting some sort of disadvantage, because womanhood is about the expression of femininity across a wide variety of behaviors, as aforementioned. misogyny would exist with or without transgender women, as peoples' negative perceptions of femininity would exist regardless of people pushing those boundaries (in fact, it is often trans-inclusive spaces that exist to push the boundaries of what defines gender and how people can stop being limited by their gender and instead use their gender, cis or trans, to empower themselves- aka, an important philosophical cornerstone for feminism).
since this is a pretty clear TERF "gotcha!" question, i know that what this question is really asking is "being transracial would be considered offensive. so then why is being transgender not?"
and the answer to that question is just as i said. the concept of changing your race is contingent on stereotyping a racial group of people in order to take advantage of them. the concept of changing your gender means analyzing your relationship between masculinity and femininity and deciding how that relates to you; while misogyny is universal, there is no universal misogyny, as well as no universal state of womanhood of which to appropriate.
also FYI, asking this question automatically revokes your right to complain about people calling TERFs and radfems racist by default. you're really going to try to compare transgender people existing to institutional racism and say you're the progressives here? try again.

In the 1960′s Legally a woman couldn’t
Open a bank account or get a credit card without signed permission from her father or hr husband.
Serve on a jury - because it might inconvenience the family not to have the woman at home being her husband’s helpmate.
Obtain any form of birth control without her husband’s permission. You had to be married, and your hub and had to agree to postpone having children.
Get an Ivy League education. Ivy League schools were men’s colleges ntil the 70′s and 80′s. When they opened their doors to women it was agree that women went there for their MRS. Degee.
Experience equality in the workplace: Kennedy’s Commission on the Status of Women produced a report in 1963 that revealed, among other things, that women earned 59 cents for every dollar that men earned and were kept out of the more lucrative professional positions.
Keep her job if she was pregnant.Until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women were regularly fired from their workplace for being pregnant.
Refuse to have sex with her husband. The mid 70s saw most states recognize marital rape and in 1993 it became criminalized in all 50 states. Nevertheless, marital rape is still often treated differently to other forms of rape in some states even today.
Get a divorce with some degree of ease. Before the No Fault Divorce law in 1969, spouses had to show the faults of the other party, such as adultery, and could easily be overturned by recrimination.
Have a legal abortion in most states. The Roe v. Wade case in 1973 protected a woman’s right to abortion until viability.
Take legal action against workplace sexual harassment. According to The Week, the first time a court recognized office sexual harassment as grounds for legal action was in 1977.
Play college sports Title IX of the  Education Amendments of protects people from discrimination  based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial  assistance It was nt until this statute that colleges had teams for women’s sports
Apply for men’s Jobs   The EEOC rules that sex-segregated help wanted ads in newspapers are illegal.  This ruling is upheld in 1973 by the Supreme Court, opening the way for women to apply for higher-paying jobs hitherto open only to men.
This is why we needed feminism - this is why we know that feminism works

Pretty convenient that a lot of American students never learn that Einstein was a Jew who came to America and started the nuclear research after fleeing from the Nazis and having most of his research lost in the book burnings.
Or how much of his life and work was shaped by his autism, like how it was his biggest asset because it allowed him to think differently, but also his biggest hurtle because of all the abuse he received in school from teachers who labeled him as a dunce and told him he was stupid because of his disability. Which he proved wrong by discovering the theory of relativity because of his autism instead of in spite of it.
EVEN THOUGH THOSE ARE THE TWO MOST RELEVANT DETAILS OF HIS LIFE THAT EXPLAIN HOW AND WHY HE DID ALMOST EVERYTHING HE DID. But nah, Im sure diversity wasn’t relevant enough to be important in this situation.
Its almost like we have a biased school system that censors the accomplishments of marginalized groups to stop them from realizing that people like them have accomplished things.

my night manager (who is a gay man) and i sometimes sit down and exchange stories and tidbits about our sexuality and our experiences in the queer cultural enclave. and tonight he and i were talking about the AIDS epidemic. he’s about 50 years old. talking to him about it really hit me hard. like, at one point i commented, “yeah, i’ve heard that every gay person who lived through the epidemic knew at least 2 or 3 people who died,” and he was like “2 or 3? if you went to any bar in manhattan from 1980 to 1990, you knew at least two or three dozen. and if you worked at gay men’s health crisis, you knew hundreds.” and he just listed off so many of his friends who died from it, people who he knew personally and for years. and he even said he has no idea how he made it out alive.
it was really interesting because he said before the aids epidemic, being gay was almost cool. like, it was really becoming accepted. but aids forced everyone back in the closet. it destroyed friendships, relationships, so many cultural centers closed down over it. it basically obliterated all of the progress that queer people had made in the past 50 years.
and like, it’s weird to me, and what i brought to the conversation (i really couldn’t say much though, i was speechless mostly) was like, it’s so weird to me that there’s no continuity in our history? like, aids literally destroyed an entire generation of queer people and our culture. and when you think about it, we are really the first generation of queer people after the aids epidemic. but like, when does anyone our age (16-28 i guess?) ever really talk about aids in terms of the history of queer people? like it’s almost totally forgotten. but it was so huge. imagine that. like, dozens of your friends just dropping dead around you, and you had no idea why, no idea how, and no idea if you would be the next person to die. and it wasn’t a quick death. you would waste away for months and become emaciated and then, eventually, die. and i know it’s kinda sophomoric to suggest this, but like, imagine that happening today with blogs and the internet? like people would just disappear off your tumblr, facebook, instagram, etc. and eventually you’d find out from someone “oh yeah, they and four of their friends died from aids.”
so idk. it was really moving to hear it from someone who experienced it firsthand. and that’s the outrageous thing - every queer person you meet over the age of, what, 40? has a story to tell about aids. every time you see a queer person over the age of 40, you know they had friends who died of aids. so idk, i feel like we as the first generation of queer people coming out of the epidemic really have a responsibility to do justice to the history of aids, and we haven’t been doing a very good job of it.
