I always had an easier time with lyrics, though Paul is quite a capable lyricist who doesn’t think he is. So he doesn’t go for it. Rather than face the problem, he would avoid it. ‘Hey Jude’ is a damn good set of lyrics. I made no contribution to the lyrics there. And a couple of lines he has come up with show indications of a good lyricist. But he just hasn’t taken it anywhere. Still, in the early days, we didn’t care about lyrics as long as the song had some vague theme… she loves you, he loves him, they all love each other.

Also, why do you think John dumped Paul? I do believe he was in love with Yoko, but John seemed to have almost done it as an emotional response to some perceived failure on Paul's part. Idk, considering we have people who say that for years John had felt 'left behind' while Paul was expanding his social circle and seemed to have viewed Paul as 'unfaithful' (re. The writing process of Eleanor Rigby, doing a separate writing project, and his avant garde friends, ect.) it seems John was very hurt.
I think that it was a combination of things, mixed with John’s deeply ingrained fear of abandonment.
I think that you’re right that a rift started opening between them as early as 66, maybe even 65, due to Paul becoming more independent and John perceiving that as Paul leaving him behind.
In my opinion, I think that one of the biggest catalysts was Paul’s engagement to Jane in December of 1967. I think that this made John feel scared about what this would mean for him and Paul’s relationship. I feel like John secretly knew that he had hoped Paul would stay unmarried forever, but he knew deep down that this was unrealistic. So now he was afraid that he and Paul would no longer have time for each other, that Paul would forget all about John and become a proper family man. However, I doubt that Paul had any idea what his engagement did for John’s insecurity and paranoia. Paul knew that he loved John more than Jane, but I don’t think John ever did.
I think that this might be what John was referring to in “Jealous Guy.” John is apologizing for figuratively going postal in response to feeling like Jane was taking Paul away from him. One of line in particular that fits this is, “I thought that you were trying to hide.” Which reminds me of the lyrics to ‘No Words’. Paul sings, “I wish you knew, that’s just how true my love was.” He’s pretty much telling John, “How could you not have known that I would never leave you?”
I’m also in the minority in the sense that I don’t actually think anything major happened between them in India. I mean, Paul and John never vacationed with each other with their wives/girlfriends present, and now John has to spend an entire month watching newly-engaged Paul and Jane behave like a regular couple, which had to have done wonders for John’s ever-increasing insecurity. Not to mention, I highly doubt that Paul and John got a second of alone time there together, what with their girls and over a dozen others there.
Then, a while after they came back from India, John and Paul went to New York alone together to promote Apple. There, they stayed at one of Brian’s friend’s place who “packed a suitcase and stayed at the St Regis hotel, giving John and Paul their privacy.”
But halfway through their trip, Paul took some time to revisit Linda Eastman, whom he’d met a few months prior. Linda’s daughter Heather was there too, and my guess is that seeing Paul looking cozy with a woman and a ready-made family made John freak out even more.
So, the NYC trip started out as being all about John and Paul, but then turned into Paul and Linda, with John as the third wheel. Seeing Paul with a new family of his own flipped the trigger. It’s everything that would trigger someone with John’s past - feeling excluded from a family, feeling rejected, fearing abandonment by a loved one. But instead of confronting Paul or fighting with him, John simply decided to replace him. That was the best way he could think of to protect Paul, and himself, from his own emotional reactions. Less than a week after the NYC trip, John suddenly decides to meet Yoko in person, and after spending one night together, John suddenly decides that Yoko’s his new soulmate. I’m not saying that John and Yoko didn’t love each other, but I think that Yoko was unknowingly the “rebound” in this situation.
Then, after John told Paul that he slept with Yoko, John kept asking him if he hated him, if he was pissed at him, looking for a reaction to prove that Paul still loved him and would fight for him. But Paul told John that he didn’t hate him, that he was proud of him, even though he was probably actually very deeply hurt. John pretended to be pleased with Paul’s response, but I think that he, too, was hurt that Paul didn’t even try to prevent John from leaving him.
Paul, instead of rising to the challenge and fighting for his man, backed down out of confusion. He was insecure and not sure of himself or the situation. He tried at first to win John back by being acquiescent, but Paul just didn’t know how to compete with Yoko. The more Paul didn’t fight back, the more John became upset.
So yeah this was a probably a lot longer than you wanted lmao but yeah I definitely think that it was just a very broad mix of things, not one specific incident between them.
