These are edits of photos taken before the college closed.
I did things like cropping them, changing colours and contrast and adding filters.
I think these edits look very nice and that they have a good moody feel, whereas the originals were quite dull and had a very yellowy background which I didn’t like.

The base portrait is ‘Self-Portrait’ by J.M.W Turner (c.1799). It was painted by him when he was a young man.
For the digital edit, I used the circle tool + grow selection + selection border + bucket fill on a layer mask on the picture of me to hide rings that expand from the centre. Then I used a ‘wave’ filter on the layer mask to make the jagged effect. Finally I messed with the brightness/contrast + colour balance.
At first I was rather intimidated by making a physical version because I had no idea how, but in the end I ‘layered’ it just like with the digital one. I painted a simple version of Turners picture with acrylics (I know the real one is oils, but I’ve never used oils in my life and this seem complicated enough already) then I masked off it in rings, painted my face over it, then finally I removed the tape. I’m pretty happy with it considering I think I’ve barely ever painted portraits with acrylics. Makes me want to try doing some that don’t involve painting over most of them.

I used ‘Girl in a Chemise’ (c. 1905) by Picasso for the base portrait. It is likely of his lover Madeleine.
I added the picture of myself and used a layer mask to hide parts so as to merge it with the painting. I copied the eyes of both pictures and flipped and swapped them. I added a ‘cartoon’ filter to the picture of me, some lines around the borders of he cutouts and the usual brightness/contrast + colour stuff.
I draw the physical version with fineliners and markers. I think it turned out well. It’s the only one I think looks better than the digital version. I particularly like the background which I did with the chisel tip end of the markers and I think made a nice paint like effect. I think that was the first time I’ve ever found the chisel tips even slightly useful!

I picked this portrait of May Morris by Robert Faulkner & Co in the 1870s.
I added the picture of myself with the layer mode set to hard light so they merge together. Then copied the border of the old picture onto a new layer so I could overlay it on both images. I then added a wave effect to my photo and played with the brightness/contrast + colour balance. I quite like how this looks. I think it could be nice to do this with a picture of myself as a child/an ancestor instead of a random stranger.
I made the physical with watercolour paints and Indian ink for the black and fineliners for the outlines. I am ok with how it looks but I prefer the digital version. I think the digital collages as I’ve been making them are not very suited to drawing.

This portrait of author Radclyffe Hall by an unknown photographer caught my eye for this task because her style is unusual for the 1930s and because she is holding a puppy
I added a picture of myself into it digitally using the ‘lighten only’ layer mode. I also a black and grey parts to the background because you couldn’t see the puppy otherwise because it breaks up the image and makes it more interesting. Finally I messed around with the brightness/contrast and the colour balance. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
For the drawn version I used watercolour pencils and watercolour paints but I really hate it. I’m not good at drawing/painting without outlines. The black and white parts look alright, but the coloured parts look wrong, though I’m having trouble explaining why.
