I need to create a unified theory of Mizurui that will explain my every thought and scenario and interpretation of their every interaction existing and fabricated with a series of parameters visualized with dials. It would fix me. Or make me sicker. Either way it would have an effect of some sorts. Paramaters such as, 0-100: seriousness of situation, degree of relationship establishment, Mizuki’s flight instinct, Rui’s (un)willingness to toe a drawn line, intensity of feelings on either side, confidence in read of the other’s feelings, so on and so forth. I think varying these things will lead to a million different beautiful worlds, miserable and joyous.

Rui mentioning Mizuki here [Emu’s Honakana Wedding card, ss2] is a little bewildering for reasons l've yet to be able to articulate for the while since I first read it. Idk... while theoretically I'm obviously familiar with Rui being familiar with Mizuki and the things she likes, him saying 'I talk to Mizuki off-screen and I know her interests' is still startling, somehow. Like usually any closeness between them has to be drawn from a stone and interpreted like an x-ray, or is disgustingly self evident, but just apropos of nothing dropping that they chat and we didn't see is something I don't know how to react to. I guess I really lowball the amount they interact off-screen, because most of their on-screen interactions are like “it’s been a while since we last talked, also it’s rare you call or message.” So like. What the hell? This is cute. But what the hell?

Given this and Mizuki’s Lost Child ss2, does Mizuki give Rui a review any time she catches a show he’s involved in, or something? And her 1st and 3rd (sorta) birthdays and Toya’s birthday1 and a couple other birthdays too, actually.

I do think Mizuki really kinda is the one closest to understanding the mechanisms with which Mafuyu smiles. Like, Kanade is fixated on making Mafuyu smile (saving her) through music because her entire life is music, she has trouble understanding what makes things fun or meaningful until she’s in the moment or afterwards, because the scope of her life has been so narrow for so long, and instinctually she falls back into patterns of trying to create emotion through music rather than making music that captures and communicates an emotion, a lived experience, a want, which is what actually makes Mafuyu smile, because under the compulsively induced numbness she is in love with life and people and connection.

Emu is fixated on making Mafuyu smile through the lens of fun, the ideals passed on to her by her grandfather, the essence of what makes Phennyland so wonderful in her eyes, a dreamlike fantasy, and even with her superhuman ability to read Mafuyu’s smile as scary or real, she doesn’t really understand how to replicate it, throwing shows and jokes at the wall until something sticks, but Mafuyu isn’t smiling at the punchlines, she’s smiling at Emu, Emu’s incomprehensible determination to make her smile for no real reason, being cared about like that.

I think Mizuki has a significantly higher hit rate for intentionally making Mafuyu smile, because the aim isn’t entirely to make her smile, it’s to impart meaning, foster connection, make Mafuyu think for even a moment “this is nice, I want to be here, I want to live,” or form any opinion at all, no matter how mild and unexpressed. Mizuki asks Mafuyu to expand her horizons, to take a second to breathe, to get a change of pace, to do something that seems pointless, to spend time with other people, to live and recognize herself as living. In large part for having her entire existence denied, Mizuki understands the joy of existing, for your own sake. A lot of what Mizuki does for Mafuyu is help her find the tools to live the life she wants, one with meaning and beauty and filled to the brim with all the things and people you love, to craft it with her own hands.

Rui just fucking loves making mechanical homunculi. >4 times he was like “what if…. I were to make a device that lets you listen to someone’s voice… (usually but not necessarily Tsukasa-kun’s)…. And may or may not look like said person….. That you can listen to or mute at your disclosure…….” Re: Razzle Dazzle Sunny Funny (Hinamatsuri/Picnic side stories), Kohane doll (An birthday1), Tsukasa jack-in-the-box (Akito birthday(n)), Tsukasa alarm (Saki birthday4). Not even counting the robots actually.
