the sight of anthony right in front of her knocked the breath clean out of her lungs and made her drop her smile almost immediately, and if it wasn't for her daughter's sudden tug at her hand, emira was sure she would have stayed frozen like that for a while. the guilt was evident in her eyes as she opened her mouth, closed it again, only to open it again like a fish, despite no sound coming out.

forcing herself to breathe through her nose deeply, emira murmured, "ant?" just in time for ela to ask "mommy?" and her head whipped down to show her daughter a slightly forced smile. she lifted her head, the smile even shakier now as she faced her ex-boyfriend. anthony. at one point in her life, emira had been so sure she would marry him. to spend the rest of her life, with him by her side.

"what are you doing here?" emira suddenly blurted out, pulling ela closer towards her, as the dread of the realization of the imminent truth coming out washed over her. fuck.
