“Very rational,” he nodded. “Must say, it’s not terribly often people are rational.. I’m Remus,” he said, holding his hand out. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Infectious - diseases,” he mused, his eyebrows rising to his hairline. “An interesting - a very interesting field of study. Have you done a lot of study in the muggle medical world?” he asked, stalling for time to figure out how best to talk about this without giving much away.
“I don’t know too much about science in the magic world other than what I’ve sort of learned coming from it myself. Wizards seem to be a bit confused by muggle things, to be honest, especially science. I think in a lot of ways, the magical world is at a disadvantage in that regard. They’ve got years of tradition but muggles are constantly evolving and creating new things. Wizards are all a bit stagnant, I think.
“But there are infectious magical diseases. Things like vampirism, lycanthropy, all the sort of monster movie things you might know from muggles. There are other types as well, those many of these stem from contact with particularly venomous plants or residual dark magic. I’ve got books on these somewhere, but no brochures, I’m afraid.”
To go from an introduction straight into a scientific discussion was more along the lines of Khadgar’s preferred conversational pace, and he was more than happy not to interrupt the speaker and offer his own name - in the grand scheme of things, even things going on at this very moment, he thought it little more than an unimportant segue.
“Well, I was only eleven when they sent me that letter, and muggle schooling, unfortunately, doesn’t breach medical science until at least a decade later. So, no, I never really got the chance to have a good look at the subject myself, but...I do have a lot of books on it that unprepared thieves have had the great misfortune of swiping from my bag for class.”
For this, he seemed proud of himself. What kind of a student would waste precious, precious bag space for books that have nothing to do with the classes he’s attending? One with multiple bags and dedication to carrying them all at once.
“So there’s no...treatment, no cure for things like...wow. Vampirism. Lycanthropy! If you had told me that these things were not only real, but considered genuine diseases in a world set apart entirely from the one I knew before I’d come here, I would have called you very creative. How does that...work? Are vampires and werewolves dangerous...? In the movies, like you said! They’re monsters. Are they monsters here...? Are there any in our classes? Muggle culture is all about exaggeration. It wouldn’t shock me to learn that ‘monsters’ have been grossly overdramatized by people who just didn’t understand what they were looking at, and...”
His eyes briefly became saucers. He threw his hand forward to shake back.
“Khadgar. I’m Khadgar. Sorry for, uh, leaving you hanging.”

Maria nods, her face an impassive mask. “I could, but it’s just another risk. Like mauling, or decapitation. My blood is special, but not special enough to ward off beasthood.”
Tumblr media
“That was…unconventional.” Yes, that was a good word for it. “You have a talent for that.” As horrific and disturbing as it was ( not that a woman who practically bathes in the blood of her enemies should judge ).
The performance ended when curiosity washed over his features, putting a tragic end to the tongue-flapping, cross-eyed creature he had brought so vibrantly to life.
“Special blood. How is your blood special? Were you born that way, or...did you...make it special?”
Khadgar’s arms slowly lowered, his head tilting to one side. He was by no means a hunter himself, choosing instead to do his part by studying the beasts, their plague, and more importantly, their blood; the ‘special blood’ of hunters had always eluded the texts left behind by ancient scholars, however, forcing him to instead stalk the fields for ‘interviews.’
To say he was flabbergasted to have found himself face-to-face with this hunter in particular would be an understatement.
Who better to ask about special blood than someone so close to the first hunter?

YES OKAY 4, 8, 15, 16, 23
4. What is their size and build? How does it influence how they use their body, if it does?
For such an outstanding student, Khadgar is, physically, rather average. I would say he’s about 5′8″ and of the appropriate weight for that height. There’s little else to say on the matter currently, but he grows into his ego a little too quickly. That’s a story for another ask meme, though. ;)
His body is his primary tool for his craft; within him is the arcane energy required to cast magic, so he looks like he’s drawing it out from his core a lot. His size doesn’t particularly influence this much at all. I just think it’s neat!
8. Where and when do they seem most and least at ease? Why? How can you tell?
For such a young fella, he never really seems to relax. No matter what he’s doing, he is always on edge, always ready to jump out of his seat and do something, always ready to go. Very easily startled. Whether this is due to stress or excitement remains to be seen by the general public but I can tell you right now that it’s a pretty solid amount of both, with stress being just a hair of a contributor.
Poor kid takes himself pretty seriously. A little too much so. It’s hard for him to calm down and enjoy the scenery no matter where he is or what he’s doing; even when he has the time to read whatever he pleases in Karazhan’s expansive library, he is furiously taking notes and copying pages from the books (illustrations et al!) to study.
He needs direction to calm down before he even considers doing so. Somebody literally has to tell him, “You can relax, Khadgar,” and he’ll look kind of surprised, but his shoulders will visibly drop. I think his favorite place to attempt to unwind is at the very tippity-top of Karazhan. The vastness of the sky and the surrounding forest is soothing. Feeling small in the grand scheme of things is something of a comfort to him.
TOO BAD THAT WON’T LAST
15. What kind of inner life do they have — rich and imaginative? Calculating and practical? Full of doubts and fears? Does it find any sort of outlet in their lives?
Sort of a mixture of all three of the examples provided, honestly. Not everything he says and does is entirely practical, and he is learning, with the help of Medivh, of course, that an imaginative mage is a powerful mage.
At first, he was an activist for practicality - someone who thoroughly believed that doing things by the book was the only correct way to do things. This came to him at that age where we all think we know everything 100%, so as he grows, he is finding this line of logic to be quite flawed. In his mid-teens was when he decided that thinking outside the box might make things a little more enjoyable and provide different, albeit better results, and he was right; this is a part of why he was chosen to be Medivh’s next apprentice. He and the old wizard don’t think entirely too differently.
He struggles deeply with his self-worth, and by that, I mean that while he’s proud of what he’s accomplished, he cannot help but wonder if it was truly he who was meant to accomplish these things, or if his being a go-getter got him something someone else may have deserved more. He is often humbled by others refusing to take him as seriously as he tends to take himself, and it can take a strange toll on his self-esteem at times, but he also learned from the Guardian that one must humble himself from time to time for the message to truly stick. He still can’t help but wonder if people don’t take him seriously because they know he doesn’t deserve the position he’s in, though.
Proving his worth is pretty high up on his priority list right now, needless to say. He wants them to believe it, and, more importantly, he wants to believe it. It surprises him each and every day that Medivh seems to believe it.
His outlet lies in his studies - when he doesn’t want to think about something unpleasant, when he feels particularly undeserving of what he has, he plunges himself into learning newer and more grandiose spells. Sometimes, it goes very well, and he rides that high for weeks on end. Sometimes, Moroes has his work cut out for him.
16. Do they dream? What are those dreams like?
I think his dreams make no sense, at all, whatsoever. There’s never any context and they never actually mean anything. He just has very strange dreams that keep him sort of baffled throughout his entire day sometimes.
Leave the meaningful subconscious visions to the prophets and farseers of Azeroth.
23. How do they respond to difficult social moments? What makes them consider a social situation difficult?
To him, socialization isn’t difficult - it’s just not his field of expertise. Not something he’s rigorously trained himself to be the best at. He fancies himself decent with people, and he isn’t entirely wrong - he conveys exactly what he would like to convey. It’s not his fault that next to no one actually takes it that way.
Spending time away from the formal atmosphere of Dalaran and having someone to talk to in poor, old Moroes as well as being allowed to make his days what he’d like of them from time to time has given him more of a chance to learn what socializing is really like, and to find that he quite enjoys it! Awkward situations are standard fare, though. He accepts their existence, and handles them by making this face (O__O) and then gently correcting whatever was said about or to him. Pinching the bridge of his nose and rubbing his eyes are your key indicators that Khadgar is uncomfortable. It’s very much a “can we not?” gesture. He just wants it to be over with ASAP.
As for genuinely difficult situations, like someone being very upset, he is shockingly graceful. He listens well, and tries to relate. To empathize. Solidarity is what soothes him when he feels upset. A feeling of isolation has plagued him his entire life. He thinks that maybe people will feel better if they don’t feel so alone, because he KNOWS that he would.
When that doesn’t work out, he simply listens.
Any situation wherein there is no immediate “solution” is difficult to him, social or otherwise. But he enjoys the challenge. Helping someone is as much an accomplishment as learning to cast a particularly complicated spell.

Maria nods, pretending she understand what he’s saying. “I’m sure we would all be using it if we had proper… mentors. However, I enjoy the thrill of physical combat. It keeps me on my toes.” the stranger seemed very pleased by his work, she didn’t want to dampen his apparent passion.
“There’s more power in blood than you think.”
By all appearances, he took a genuine interest in an alternate perspective - his head was tilted to one side, his brow furrowed in thought. “The thrill,” he muttered, more to himself than to his current victim.
“I suppose I can’t argue with that. Strange to hear that someone would enjoy...uh, this,” he motioned to the carnage in the surrounding area, “but I guess somebody has to. Aren’t you ever worried, though? About...catching it? Hunters are different, aren’t they...? Wouldn’t something happen to you? Something, uh, really...”
Khadgar mimicked a gruesome transformation, first one into a snarling beast, and then another, using his arms as tentacles sprouting forth from his mouth.

“No, I’m operating on a patience-is-a-virtue, strategy. Honestly, I don’t blame people for getting frustrated with the coursework, and I know she doesn’t mean anything by it. She’s working through a lot.”
He threw his head back and laughed, himself the foremost expert on intentional, infectious bites. “I’ve been bit in worse ways, don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on it.”
“I’m just saying, you really never know what any given person could be carrying, especially not someone you refer to as a house elf, but I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt in this situation since you seem to be more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.”
Khadgar should have the decency to acquiesce in a situation where he was innumerably more curious than he was polite, but there was no telling how long that would last if the subject remained at hand; he would have to change it or face another incident wherein he stuck his nose a little too deeply into someone else’s business.
“Are you interested at all in studying the source of infectious disease? I don’t know what one might call that in the magical world, but in muggle society, it was sort of a huge deal. How do wizards deal with disease? Are there...magical diseases? Where does science even fit in in the world of magic! Why doesn’t anybody tell you this stuff when they give you the letter to come to wizard school. A brochure would have been appreciated.”
Or, he could do the exact opposite of that.

“Mmm… Yes, well done.”
Tumblr media
“It’s a promising start.”
“A start!”
From his position, now knelt on the ground inspecting it for...something, Khadgar raised his head to get a good look at the woman he was hoping he had impressed.
Judging by the looks of her, his hopes had dwindled by more than a small margin.
“There’s no viscera left behind from the blast. People are still adverse to it because they don’t understand it, but I think magic is the most efficient way to deal with things like infectious beasts.” He rose to full height with an ever-so-slight-but-just-noticeable-enough stumble. “Wouldn’t it save you, the hunters, a lot of trouble if there was less risk of catching the plague you’re trying to combat? Swords are effective, but not ideal. Such close contact is almost foolish if the disease is bloodborne.”
