sneak peak at my new criminal minds fic!! it's a lemonade mouth au :)))
wc: 1.2k
Emily was used to new places. Being a psychology professor, her mom has been moving her around all over the world for as long as she could remember, bringing her along when she gets a new opportunity to teach. It was easy with just the two of them, given her father isn't in the picture. It was cool. She liked it. She liked the fact that her mother was so smart that people all over the world request her presence and on the way, she's even picked up a few languages. So, for the most part, Emily liked the traveling.
Though, naturally, it had its downsides.
Since she's been so many places, she never knew how to answer her new friends when they ask where she's from. She learned to keep people at arms length in preparation for the fact that, eventually, she will be leaving. And maybe, despite her loving the idea of having such an intelligent mom, Emily just wanted her mom to speak to her like a daughter rather than another mind to pick apart.
Whatever she feels, it's fine. She's used to all of these feelings and she finds no problem with baring them on her shoulders. It's the way it's always been and realistically, her life could be considered lucky. Her mom was a little hard-headed but she wasn't mean and the two of them were very well off so who was she to complain about the state of her life?
With all the different environments and people that she's experienced, her one constant has been her journal. Her journal holds everything. Her drawings, her entries, random scribbles that she's drawn out of frustration. Everything. It was her saving grace and her most prized possession.
No one has ever looked through it.
Now, as she sat on the bed of her new room, she was halfway finished with a sketch of the view from outside her bedroom. Her hands covered in the lead from her pencil and the picture almost damn near perfect from all the other times she's drawn whatever she sees on a whim.
The past month has been filled with the procedure that she knew all too well. Packing up the few valuables she allowed herself to have, getting in the car, and unpacking what she had only to do it all over again just before she got too comfortable. This recent move has her finding herself in Abingdon, Virginia. She was never used to small towns. She's spent most of her time in fast-moving cities, often finding herself in places similar to New York City and Chicago.
Flipping through the pages of her journal, she saw the views from her many bedrooms over the years. If there was one thing her mom made sure of, it's that she at least had something nice to look out and see. Truthfully, she never knew if it was her mom being nice or if she was just taking advantage of the money that they had but she was grateful nonetheless.
Her bedroom had one window and a door that leads to a balcony. The view out of the window was nice but it was different from what she was used to. In the past, she would've seen an overview of a bustling city with buildings upon buildings with busy streets and crowded sidewalks. Now, her window opened up to a scene that consisted of different sized houses and directly onto the street. Now, instead of the people looking like tiny dots along a blackboard. It was strange being so close that she can see each individual person walking passed.
She had a week until her first day at her new school and first day of senior year. She knew how much senior year meant to all the other students. Most of them have probably been envisioning this school year since the summer before they started freshman year. It was such a huge deal that Emily never understood. She would always sit and listen to what everyone else shared excitement for and in the moments where they asked her what she thought, she would have to remind them that she would not be in their school by the time senior year came around. This time, though, she would have to sit there and watch as everyone fulfilled all of the events that they so clearly couldn't wait for. She would be forced to watch in envy as they celebrate all the success and progress that they made with the people most important to them while she doesn't get that privilege. The people most important to her consisted of a machine-like mother and a cat. She never imagined what it would be like to go prom dress shopping with her mom or go to the first football game of the season with her friends. She wasn't even in the US by the time prom season came around last year and she didn't have enough interest in sports to show up to their games.
But it's fine. It's the way it's always been and she doesn't care. The only exciting thing about this school year, is that by the end of it, she'll be going off the college and maybe she'll finally have something permanent for once in her life. A place where she finally feels like she belongs.
Now, that was something that she couldn't wait for.
Emily was broken from her trance when her cat, Sergio, jumped up on her bed, startling her. A soft smile spread across her face as her curled up next to her, "Are you liking the new house, Sergio?"
She began to pet him and listened peacefully as he started to purr. Without retreating her hand from the cat, Emily took a second to look out of the glass doors of her balcony. It was a decent sized platform, bigger than ones she had in the past, but the view wasn't anything special as it just looked right into the window of the house next door. Emily stood up and walked through the doors, immediately being met with a light breeze. She looked around, taking in her surroundings. Drawn to the movement, Emily's eyes snapped over to her new neighbor's window. It gave her a clear scene of a blonde girl pulling back a bench to take a seat at the piano up against the wall of her bedroom. Emily watched as the girl took a hold of the sheet music that sat on the music stand and began to look through it. Then, as if she felt the weight of Emily's stare, the blonde girl froze and glanced out the window. Both girls felt their breathing cease, as if they were both caught doing something they weren't supposed to. Nervously, Emily gave a weak smile while the blonde returned her smile with just as much awkwardness and a wave. Tripping over herself, Emily took a step back and turned around to walk back into her room.
After she closed the door behind her, she made sure to close the blinds and released a breath after successfully hiding herself from the uncomfortableness of the situation she found herself in. After taking a few seconds to recover, she flopped herself down onto her bed for a short-lived moment of peace before she heard her mom calling her down for dinner.

chercia is so jemily and it actually makes me sick
both of them being best friends who stick together through thick and thin, having a connection that they can’t quite decipher. the denial of being in love with your best friend and the fear of acknowledging their sexualities. the idea of staying friends for the sake of not risking the loss of their person. and then jj losing will and cherry losing bob and both of them seeking comfort in the one person who has always been there. oh my god i just love them so bad.

bev, who grew up listening to her parents talk about what that greaser did at the grocery store today.
bev, whose parents would take her home the second they saw greaser kids come to the park because they “just wanted to keep her safe” and she “shouldn’t be hanging around such dirty children”
bev, who remembers the girl with the scraped knees that she used to play with in first grade until she realized that her friend was one of those kids that her parents would tell her to stay away from
bev, who has a rocky relationship with her parents
bev, who knows deep down that greasers really aren’t all that bad and constantly has to overrule her second guessing by looking towards those who feed into the stereotypes on a surface level
bev, who believes that greasers are bad because if they’re not bad then it’s just another way her parents fucked her over
bev, who stubbornly sticks with these prejudices anyway because no matter how much she hated her parents, at least she could use the idea of them protecting her as a way to lie to herself and convince herself that they do care in some capacity

i don’t remember where it was, but i saw someone questioning how jj and will were able to have two kids while haley and hotch’s marriage couldn’t manage one and just want to put my two cents in because i’ve been sitting on it for weeks.
(before you read: i didn’t proofread this so excuse any errors and this is all just what i believe)
alright, so obviously, a huge factor is how hotch is a #workaholic but first i want to mention the fact that will also works in law enforcement. like he’s literally a detective that jj (and the rest of the team) met while working on the same case. he not only understands the crazy hours, but also the emotions that come with the job.
onto the workaholicness of aaron hotchner, a major aspect of why hotch was so driven to working so much was the guilt that he felt from not being present on a case. in his mind, the idea of something going wrong could so easily be chalked up to the fact that he wasn’t there or the fact that he wasn’t working as hard. of course he loves his family but when his job is to literally be out saving people’s lives, he feels responsible for any deaths that happen so he tries his hardest to prevent that by always being present at work. something that i don’t see people talking about enough is the fact that he is unit chief. he’s not just another member of the team like he is literally the boss. hotch’s high position definitely adds a lot more weight to the guilt he has looming over him and when he was suspended, the team literally did what they could to bring him back which only could’ve solidified all of these thoughts in his head.
moving onto haley, as far as we know and from what it seems like, she never had a job anywhere close to hotch’s. this means that she knows in theory the gruesome things that hotch sees, but i believe that guilt like that isn’t truly understandable unless you are someone who works in a career like that and holds that same feeling. (also keep in mind that i am a haley defender until the day i die) due to hotch’s mentality, distancing himself from his job is a lot harder than she thinks because she doesn’t truly understand the weight of it in his head. she doesn’t have the ability to connect with or understand hotch on that level. when they argue and hotch says “this is who i am”, i really don’t think haley understands the feeling that he’s trying to convey to her and hotch being so emotionally unavailable (sorry king), he doesn’t make an effort to help her get what he’s trying to say. i truly believe that if he were better at explaining the guilt that clouded his mind, she could’ve at least tried to help him ease some of the heaviness of it. instead, he shut her out and left her in the dark.
now, as for will and jj, jj doesn’t have to explain to will all the hardships that sprout from the job because he knows firsthand what it’s like. he’d known for way longer than he even knew jj. because they are able to understand each other in that way, they probably didn’t have many arguments like haley and hotch’s. i think they were able to be there for each other when the guilt felt overbearing, allowing them to remind each other that they are not responsible for any deaths that may happen whether they were there to see it or not. this connection let them hold each other up so neither of them spiraled into a mentality similar to hotch. since they were able to keep each other sane (or as sane as they can be), it helped them balance their family with their respective jobs. haley and hotch didn’t have that kind of relationship because of haley’s lack of understanding hotch’s perspective and hotch’s reluctance towards opening up about it.
in some ways i think haley was so caught up in her anger that she never tried too hard to see hotch’s side and because of this, she saw hotch as a dad who doesn’t care about their family as much as she did. however, i do think she was brought to that point of anger due to hotch’s lack of communication about how he feels. while she never exactly tried to coax it out of him, her expressing the frustration she felt towards his absence were multiple opportunities for him to open up about how he feels and he never took it. on the other hand, her yelling “this is what you do” in response to him and capping it at that shows that she never looked past the surface level of his words and as that was the closest we saw hotch opening up to haley about the job, it made this part of their dynamic very clear. she could’ve used that as an opening to reassure him that he’s not responsible for the people dying but she didn’t because how could she have known that he needed it? she was too focused on his leaving and he was too closed off to tell her how he felt.
ok this was a lot and now my brain is all over the place and i feel like i’ll stop making sense if i keep going so i’m cutting it off here
tldr jj and will work out because they are both in law enforcement and haley and hotch don’t because only one of them do
anyway i love hotch and haley so much and their relationship rots my brain bye

When Pony wants affection from Darry but really, really doesn’t want to admit it.
Maybe he’s trying to stay mad at Darry for not-at-all silly argument they had, or he’s decided he’s too grown to cuddle with his big brother, or he’s mad about a fight where Darry refused to acknowledge that he’s grown.
Then Darry will ruffle his hair or tuck Pony into his side or pull him into his lap, and Pony will snuggle into Darry’s hold like “hmph this is nice 😠”
