Posting here a rant I wrote in one of the loa discords earlier

(this is just my interpretation of stuff ive noticed from these two!!)

coalecroux and internalized homophobia

I feel like even tho there’s no indication that homophobia exists in avantris in the same way it exists in the real world queer people probably aren’t super normalized either. Imo there is definitely an underlying vibe in Kremy and Gideons inability to communicate of “will he think differently of me” bc they’re both guys?? It’s sorta implied in a lot of their dialogue(ex: “just a couple of guys” and “it’s ironic”). The way the two deny their feelings reminds me a lot of older queer couples I know who deny their (very evident) relationship despite it being more widely accepted now. Less so it’s a thing they will get discriminated against for but more like they won’t know how the other will react. Also I think that’s why Gideon is so much more awkward around guys he’s attracted to vs women. Why he was so awkward around the King and using such evasive language (he kept saying he’s so handsome relatively quietly instead of fully fawning over him like every1 else was ) and got so flustered whenever the king pointed out his heart was racing and stuff. For Kremy, I feel like him being gay is kind of an unspoken understanding everyone has (to me he feels like one of those people you can just kinda tell) but it’s not like he’s told anyone directly yk. Gideon might’ve witnessed him (very occasionally) being attracted to guys over the course of the years and years they’ve traveled together but I doubt they’ve actually talked about it. With Gideon it’s a whole other can of worms bc he’s one of those guys that’s seems to pride himself on his masculine qualities and probably feels super conflicted (and likely in denial) about liking guys and tries to hide it (badly). He dosent understand his feelings for Kremy even though they’ve been there for probably years at this point bc it’s just so out of his comfort zone he tries not to think of them. Besides, he probably dosent realize Kremy reciprocates the feelings and dosent want to get rejected and for Kremy to see him differently if he confessed. Kremy, in turn, is probably clueless about Gideon being any semblance of queer (up until probably ep 34) and isn’t willing to ruin their friendship for the sake of his feelings. It’s not like they can just come out to each other either both bc of my previously mentioned points and also bc they probably don’t even have words to label their experiences with. All this leads to so much miscommunication and assumptions made by the two that they won’t even try to talk to each other or clear things up.

Ya know I am of the mind that while Kremy is smaller than what Gatorfolk are expected to be he is still stronger, taller, and got more decent muscle mass than like a regular human guy cause he is at the end of the day a God damn alligator

A non-monagonous relationship is still a relationship. Ya gotta have both parties consenting and consent given because you're scared the other person will be upset isn't true consent. Boundaries gotta be set and honestly Mr. Lecroux, I've very curious on where ya got your fear that boundaries are a cage 🧐

Like he's totally chill about non-monogamy conceptually and when other ppl do it but he's practically eating his own tail trying to fit himself into that category like he's such a selfish bastard in every other regard except when it comes to Gideon's perceived needs (not that wanting to be exclusive with one person is selfish to be clear)

Also yea! Gideon is pretty flexible when it comes to partners. Gender and amount wise, go Bisexual polyam King!

Like even tho I have my own personal thoughts about being able to see Gideon be kinda difficult about taking their relationship more seriously if it ever gets addressed, it less has to do with him not wanting to be monogamous and more to do with other hang ups he has that he's pointedly ignoring because he's stubborn and bullheaded about change.

But in the end he's loyal to those he loves so if his partner wants to be exclusive and they work through everything else then yeah he's all in baby

Wait okay not done actually. To be honest this line of thinking came after I watched the PAX Unplugged One Shot. I know it isn't canon but I found something interesting in the way Nikki describes Kremy and Gideon's nightmare visions of how they die.

Kremy's involves Gideon dying on him first and being unable to let him go to the point that he reanimates his corpse to be beside him always.

Meanwhile, in Gideon's based off the wording Nikki uses he's all alone not because Kremy died on him but because for undisclosed reasons they broke up. It's not "it's been however long since Kremy died", it's "been many many years since you've seen Kremy; who knows where he is or what's happened to him". And that is what sends him spiraling back into a drunken pit. Not the idea of his partner dying on him but the idea of Kremy leaving him and cutting ties.

Because that to him is the more likely scenario of the two. If Kremy is dead then he had failed and died first already. I don't think there's any scenario Gideon can imagine where Kremy goes first so long as he's still kicking. But Kremy deciding he's had enough of his shit, packing his stuff, and ditching him? Now that is a nightmare worth agonizing over.

Like man unfortunately there's a fic that at the moment only lives in my head and I don't have the energy or time to write where that fear gets realized. Kremy breaks the unspoken rules they laid out and says all the quiet parts out loud hoping Gideon chooses him but still giving him the option to bow out cause he would never want to intentionally tie him down. He wants Gideon to choose him voluntarily and Gideon doesn't. Not because he's incapable or doesn't feel the same but because he's not ready to give up the bit. The bit is safe. The bit's been working out so far why the hell would ya up and ruin that Kremy cmon.

Getting confirmation of what always been nagging in the back of his head and what he's always feared, Kremy accepts the rejection with a grim finality. After everything that happened in the Faewild he finds it difficult to continue on as normal so instead he makes a rash decision that has him severing himself from the group. Severing himself from Gideon.

After all what's one more in a long line of failed marriages.

Now Gideon has to deal with the aftermath of losing his husband because he was too afraid to make a decision.

Now I've mostly been lurking off in the peripheral shadows so I could be totally off base with this but I don't think Gideon is given enough grief over his commitment issues and the way he treats women/partners as disposal after he's gotten his fill of whatever fling catches his interest in the moment

And I mean this more in a opportunity for character exploration and conflict type of way. Let me explain:

So from what I've gathered when it comes to the turbulent situationship that Kremy and Gideon find themselves in and denying, often the central figure carrying all the baggage and hangups over making it more official is Kremy. Which yeah guy has gotten himself tangled up in his own bullshit that can easily be unraveled by just having an honest, vulnerable conversation about his feelings; Challenge: Impossible for that gator I think he would rather face the Jabberwocky alone than do that.

But Gideon is as much of the problem and difficult about the whole thing in my opinion. To a degree that I kinda GET why Kremy is a lil chickenshit about poking the boundaries of whatever the hell they got going on even when it's starting to genuinely bother him.

Like okay take for instance the scene with the snakes. Gideon's fear of commitment is laid out pretty plainly by an outside party and Kremy is quick to confirm it. Like this is something he's aware of and has to begrudgingly accept but he doesn't seem particularly happy about it. Meanwhile Gideon acts like he doesn't have a clue what they're talking about and purposefully misinterprets their words. I don't think he was legitimately confused, he's just extremely stubborn about admitting his faults and taking responsibility for them.

All this to say is that personally I actually can see Kremy be the one to come to terms that he wants to be more serious first and swallow his lying tongue to forcibly remove the words out to articulate that he wants things to change and Gideon is the one digging his heels to keep things the same.

I don't know there's sauce in that that I'm craving for.
