Week 14- Anonymous Communist
This week in class we discussed the Internet organization “Anonymous” which is a group that conducts shenanigans on the Internet for various reasons. These reasons include anything from doing it for a laugh to actually changing a social issue.  In anonymous, there isn’t a person with a position of power. Everybody has an equal say so nobody abuses power. This way, they accomplish what they set out to do as a group effort.
There was another group in history that attempted to divide power equally. They were known as “Communist” but unlike anonymous, they didn’t work out. In Communism, certain people rose to positions of power despite the fact that power was supposed to be divided among the masses. People were able to do this because there wasn’t a sense of anonymity. Because people could be well known, certain people were able to rise up to be a harsh leader. They kept this position of power because they were recognizable. People feared them. In anonymous, however, leaders are not easy to rise up because when one tries to rise up, everyone counters it very quickly.   The people are able to rise up because there is minimum consequence for doing such a thing online, which makes them more inclined to act. The people who were oppressed by a communist leader, however, had a much higher risk of failure that even could have resulted in death. The person in power already had an established name, and was able to get away with punishing the people revolting.   The fact of not knowing who people are makes people more inclined to fight injustice.

Week 13- The /b/rothers Grim
The article “Now Ten Years old, 4chan is the Most Important Site You Never Visit,” discusses how many Internet memes and phenomena’s start on 4chan. 4chan is essentially the heart of the Internet.  However, as these things move onto other, more general population websites, the content tends to get diluted. Things that start on 4chan tend to transition to websites such as reddit, and then progress down the line until they end up on websites such as 9gag and Facebook. At this point however, the content is less intense than it was originally, and many of the people viewing it do not have any idea where it started.
In a sense, what happens with memes are what happened with fairy tales; many fairy tales, specifically those written by the brothers grim, were not for children. Instead, they were filled with dark, violent content. As the story passed through the generations, however, they became much more family oriented. Eventually, some even got made into Disney movies. Although these movies are meant for everyone, if you analyze them closely enough, you can see the dark beginnings, like how the step sisters abuse Cindarella. Many people who view these movies have no idea where they began, much like how many people don’t know where memes begin. Take the lolcatz, for example. They began on 4chan , but icanhazcheeseburger made them popular and everyone accredits the meme to that website.

Week 11- Star Wars, Governments, and Other Things
Collaboration is an essential part of the creative process. Whether it is with media, school projects, or software engineering, having one person in charge of something without anybody to consult him or her never seems to go over well.  A huge example of this in pop culture is the prequel Star Wars Trilogy. George Lucas had complete creative control of the franchise, and therefore, nobody told him that Jar Jar Binks was a bad idea. Who was going to question George Lucas, the creator of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time?  This dawned on me as I read “Open Sourcing Horror The Slenderman, Marble Hornets, and Genre Negotiations.”
The article discussed open sourcing, a form of software collaboration in which many people are allowed to work on something, and how it applies to internet mythos, such as the Slenderman. This also reminds me of the Star Wars expanded Universe, which is a term for Star Wars Media made outside of the movies. Unlike the movies, anybody was allowed to make content for it, and therefore, the legends of Star Wars continued to expand, until Disney made the expanded universe non cannon. Many other franchises are expanded this way. Sometimes the big entertainment corporations hire people to collaborate with them in order to produce more content.  I believe that it is better this way, because fans write many of these stories, and fans are what keep the spirit of a franchise alive.
Collaboration is even effective on a much larger scale. There is a word for somebody that has complete control of a country. This word is “dictator,” and dictators tend to not be good for the well being of a country’s inhabitants.  Countries that are run by collaboration tend to flow more smoothly.
No matter how big or small the concept is, working together will always make things better. I believe that hearing a second opinion will always have better results whenever new ideas are being thought of.

Week 10- Playing Games
The reading “The Labor of Fun,” describes how to some people, video games have become like a second job.  To some people, video games are more of a burden than a tool for enjoyment.   They feel they have an obligation to do certain things in the game, like level up, and buy items. This has especially been prominent in “freemium games,” which are games that are initially free but have the potential to make the user pay hundreds of dollars over time.  These games are especially prone to make people devote a certain amount of time to them, because most of these games only allow a limited amount of actions each day. But sometimes, people devote too much time to these games, and horrible things happen. In 2010, a lady in Jackson, Florida shook her 3-month-old baby to death for interrupting her Farmville session by crying.
Tumblr media
The lady was so engulfed by the Farmville game that she lost touch of reality.  And 3 months prior to that, a South Korean Couple spent so much time nurturing a child in an online game that they forgot to nurture their real life child, causing him to starve to death. Video games were so urgent in the lives of the people in both of these cases, that their real life obligations no longer took priority. It is evident that in modern times, video games are much more serious than one comes to expect. While most people who play video games don’t end up committing murder, a lot of other people waste the time they could have been using to accomplish something else.

Week 9- the Darknet
During class this week, and in the article “Pornographies of Violence? Internet Spectatorship on Body Horror,” the topic of porn was discussed. Rather than porn being a term that connotes sexual experiences on film, it more so is a term that describes something that is excessive, and that is viewed outside of the mainstream’s approval.. Some people like to watch  people being killed, or “death porn.” The reasons why websites like liveleak.com exist is because people get a strange arousal from viewing death and gore, and it is considered excessive because it is too much at times. This is also the reason why television often portrays death. Although some people view it because they want to see the truth, many other people get adrenaline-ridden feelings from it. But for some people, that is not enough, and they need to explore an even sketchier place. On the Internet, there is a section not accessible from a standard browser. It is called the darknet, and it is a hub for criminals and illegal activities. There, people sell drugs and weapons, and offer illegal services, as well as post disturbing videos that far exceeds the stuff found on liveleak. Most people who access this do so from an application that makes their location anonymous. But why do people access this? Some people are simply curious that something like that exist, and use the defense that they aren’t doing anything immoral. Other people, however, get aroused by the thought of looking at such shocking material (and other people that go on in are actually criminals). The fact that they are anonymous and they are witnessing truly disturbing things is arousing to them.

Week 8- America’s Diner
In class this week, an important topic we discussed was affective labor, which is the concept of carrying out subconscious actions meant to evoke some kind of response in other people. Often, this has to do with the image that the person is trying to form of himself/ herself.  Examples of this are evident in many different places, and we can see this with famous people. For example, celebrities that endorse Pepsi will try to not be seen drinking Coca Cola out in public. Athletes will be seen eating healthy and not smoking cigarettes. And some people will even say tings to portray the image of themselves in the public eyes. For example, when Paula Dean blurted out her racial slur, she had her PR team apologize for her.
Immaterial labor is similar to affective labor, but it is more geared towards products. The article by Mark Coté and Jennifer Pybus describes how in the digital age, this has materialized into immaterial labor 2.0.  Immaterial labor 2.0 shows how corporations use the internet to create specific feelings amongst the consumers. For example, Denny’s twitter has very informal tweets. They are trying to evoke feelings of relaxation and happiness inside of their customers to compliment the informal vibe that Denny’s has. They also refer to themselves as “America’s Diner” to evoke feelings of patriotism. When I read the goofy tweets from Denny’s, I picture myself just having a very informal lunch as I crack jokes with my friends.
Immaterial Labor and Affective labor can also show itself when people use social networks to interact with their friends. They are trying to evoke the same feelings of happiness and social interaction that they would if they were to have a conversation in real life.  And people that post emotional statuses are trying to get actual emotional responses out of people. I believe that is why depressing statuses get so many likes.

Week 4- Is Mayonnaise A Friend?
It seems to me that the word "friend" is misused on social media. A friend is somebody whom you know on an intimate level- somebody that you talk to often, hang out with all the time, and somebody who generally has your back. And while your "friends" on social media can be your actual friends, most of them are not.  I seems to me like the correct word should be "connection" instead. Connections that are used for making new friends, as well as keeping in touch with people you need to work with. I think, however, if your connections on Facebook were not referred to as "friends", the website would seem a lot less appealing. Therefore people add all the friends they can, because they think if they have a lot of "friends", their influence will increase.
In the reading, Boyd says Facebook can be used for networking. You can network on Facebook and make friends from talking to people on it. However, many people don't use it that way, and instead use it to only talk to their friends. Boyd says they think it is a substitute for "hanging out", although in reality, it hardly compares to face to face social interaction. Yes, social media is useful for staying in touch with people, and yes it is good for seeing how people who are "potential friends" are, but if you only interact with people on social media, you are going to live a very lonely life.

Week 2- Spectacle 2.0
The Spectacle has always been a “society” where it has been easy to take the ideas of others, and pass them on as your own. The coming of The Spectacle 2.0 has made doing this predominantly easier. For example, I often see Instagram post with girls holding a Starbucks cup (and guys too, but not as often). They almost seem proud to have the caffeinated, overpriced beverage, as if they are taking credit for it. They also like to caption the picture with a long, and often unrelated quote that is from a song, book or movie. These quotes often go unaccredited, because the posters like to use them as a way of self-expression.
I am not free from sin; I tend to always either retweet funny things I see, or just quote them as if I am saying them. In fact just a few minutes ago I reblogged a funny video with a frog in a sale boat, because, whether I like to admit it or not, I wanted to express myself as a funny person. However, at least with Twitter and Tumblr, I have to give the original poster credit. There was a period of time where I only used Facebook back in my younger days, and during these days, every other status I had was a quote from a funny movie or television program.
Is the Spectacle, and the Spectacle 2.0 a bad thing? Not necessarily. Although I believe its making people a tad more unoriginal, I also believe that it gives insights for how people think of themselves. For example, somebody who post funny things will more than likely be a funny person. People who post gangster rap lyrics are people who I typically wouldn’t want to run into in a dark alleyway.

Week 1 - I'm Really Angry That Comic Sans Wasn't a Font Option
I wanted my title to be in comic sans. But it was not an option. This angers me. Anyway I'm Joey. I'm a sophmore at Rutgers. I'm technically undeclared, but I'm going to major in Journalism and Media Studies. Also, I'm in the film certificate program at Mason Gross. I want to work in television production, although I do not have an ideal job in mind yet. Also, I'm really handsome. Like really handsome . As well as charismatic.
