STUDENT MEDIA CONGRESS 2015
These are photos from last monthâs SMC. Actually, this is my second time in this congress and itâs still a great experience. I may not be a Communication student but I really do appreciate media. It exists everywhere and thereâs so much to learn in every aspect of it.
Aside from the new knowledge, itâs really a fun experience. But, I got confused if I will attend the Day 2 of the Congress because the schedule is conflict with the first day of Philippine Model Congress. Anyway, I still managed to attend both congresses.Â
To end this post, I must say that Iâve learned the art of prioritizing and balancing things. Itâs really a tough decision whether to attend SMC or PMC. I know that I chose both but I missed the whole experience because I wasnât able to finish the events.Â
In relation, itâs more of  âsana dalawa ang puso ko.â   Hmm, ganon talaga, mahirap pagsabayin. Just kidding hahaha

Student Media Congress 2015
Last October 16 and 17, students, trainees, and professionals from different schools and institutions around the country have gathered in DLSU to participate in a two-day event consisting of seminars and workshops, spearheaded by invited professionals from the different fields. Student Media Congress, with its theme: Experiencing Media Dynamics, invited 70 known media experts in the industry and offered 69 talks and workshops which included different media categories.
On its first day, four media experts gave their respective talks about their field expertise. The invited speakers were Pia Hontiveros ot CNN, Alexandra Priet-Romualdez of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Dennis Lim of the Digital Media Services at ABS-CBN, Merlee Jayme of DM9, and was Reynaldo âKa Reneâ Sta. Cruz of DZBB. Each of them provided a peek into the industry as they shared their experiences and projects, giving the audience a brief look about what they are to face.
To end the first half of the day, Anna Loraine Centeno, director of the DLSU Student Media office, presented the Student Media Congress summation and gave thanks to the 1,208 delegates from 75 schools, colleges, universities from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Delegates who have chosen competing workshops such as News Writing, Feature Writing, Sports Writing, Editorial/Opinion Writing, Creative Writing, Pagsulat ng Lathalain, Photojournalism, Magazine Layout, and Conceptual Photography will continue on with their seminars. Each workshop has speakers and the announcements of the winners for each event are to be announced and awarded on the closing ceremony of the second day of event.
SMCâs second day brings a multitude of seminars and workshopsâboth interactive and hands-on. Delegates walk around the DLSU campus in search for the assigned rooms and/or auditoriums. Among the non-competing workshops were Television Production with Cathy Garcia-Molina, The Secret Weapon for Breaking News and Reporting with Mike Enriquez, Calligraphy Design with Abbey Sy, Videography with Dan Villegas, and many more.

Syntax Math Challenge 2015
by Janne Ngo
Chemical Engineering students once again emerged as champions in the annual SYNTAX Math Challenge. This year, four CHE froshies garnered distinction in the said event. The CHE block EA, represented by the team of Kenneth Colio, Thamania Gulimao and Cary Chan, bagged the first prize, outperforming the other frosh blocks in the College of Engineering, and Team EB composed of Sephi Liclican (CHE), Nathan Salud (MEM) and Miguel Belen (MEM) followed as the first runner-up. Â Sephi Liclican was also recognized as the top scorer in the elimination round.

First Place: Block EA

Second Place: Block EB
Winning the championship in this annual Engineering Math quiz bee has been a well-kept legacy of CHE students, with prior CHE batches ID 113 and ID 112 also finishing 1st Place in the previous years.
On behalf of the Chemical Engineering Society, we would like to congratulate Kenneth Colio, Cary Chan, Thamania Gulimao (ChEn Junior Officer, Academics Committee) and Sephi Liclican (ChEn Junior Officer, Activities Committee)!

Week 14- Anonymous Communist
This week in class we discussed the Internet organization âAnonymousâ which is a group that conducts shenanigans on the Internet for various reasons. These reasons include anything from doing it for a laugh to actually changing a social issue. Â In anonymous, there isnât a person with a position of power. Everybody has an equal say so nobody abuses power. This way, they accomplish what they set out to do as a group effort. Â Â Â Â Â
There was another group in history that attempted to divide power equally. They were known as âCommunistâ but unlike anonymous, they didnât work out. In Communism, certain people rose to positions of power despite the fact that power was supposed to be divided among the masses. People were able to do this because there wasnât a sense of anonymity. Because people could be well known, certain people were able to rise up to be a harsh leader. They kept this position of power because they were recognizable. People feared them. In anonymous, however, leaders are not easy to rise up because when one tries to rise up, everyone counters it very quickly.  The people are able to rise up because there is minimum consequence for doing such a thing online, which makes them more inclined to act. The people who were oppressed by a communist leader, however, had a much higher risk of failure that even could have resulted in death. The person in power already had an established name, and was able to get away with punishing the people revolting.  The fact of not knowing who people are makes people more inclined to fight injustice.

Week 13- The /b/rothers Grim
The article âNow Ten Years old, 4chan is the Most Important Site You Never Visit,â discusses how many Internet memes and phenomenaâs start on 4chan. 4chan is essentially the heart of the Internet.  However, as these things move onto other, more general population websites, the content tends to get diluted. Things that start on 4chan tend to transition to websites such as reddit, and then progress down the line until they end up on websites such as 9gag and Facebook. At this point however, the content is less intense than it was originally, and many of the people viewing it do not have any idea where it started.
In a sense, what happens with memes are what happened with fairy tales; many fairy tales, specifically those written by the brothers grim, were not for children. Instead, they were filled with dark, violent content. As the story passed through the generations, however, they became much more family oriented. Eventually, some even got made into Disney movies. Although these movies are meant for everyone, if you analyze them closely enough, you can see the dark beginnings, like how the step sisters abuse Cindarella. Many people who view these movies have no idea where they began, much like how many people donât know where memes begin. Take the lolcatz, for example. They began on 4chan , but icanhazcheeseburger made them popular and everyone accredits the meme to that website.Â

Week 2 - 2.0
The society of the spectacle, in my opinion, does not differ from either the real world or the "spectacle 2.0" for it has merely just taken a different mediated form. Mass media and its interpretations of life are only reaching a specific audience, whether it be shoes for women, Calvin Klein ads for cologne or toys for children. The spectacle is merely for profit, objectivity, and a world contrived of symbols and images that society WANTS you to believe and buy so that it will benefit from it.
Demographics are the main concern for what people are trying to reach when it comes to music, movies, news and any media in regards towards reaching a audience. Networked publics consist entirely of young Americans and people in general, and thrive in a pop culture environment where what's new and what's relevant determines the prominence and presence of money in it. Frozen yogurt, Snapchat, bubble tea, aromatherapy and Starbucks are all symbols and objects successful and relevant in both a spectacle 2.0 environment and serves its purpose as proving that the internet, email, and other forms of social media and connectivity has made us into a "viral" culture, one dependent on relevancy and branding that constructs our everyday lives and is reliant on technology and the internet.
