Grounded chap 4
Hi, everyone, yeah it's been a minute, sorry.
Read the whole chapter on AO3 ; Grounded - Chapter 4 - FrustratedPoet1979 - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]
The opening ceremony was every single part as amazing as James had ever hoped it would be, a true spectacle.
James was feeling completely overwhelmed with the emotion of this moment, and couldn’t have hidden his awe even if he wanted to. The emotion was surging in him like an avalanche just waiting to fall down the ravine.
He was standing, waiting to go into the stadium with the rest of team GB. He could hear the crowds cheering as each country was announced. It felt so much like a quidditch match but also so much more significant, the whole world was watching. He could feel the energy of the rest of his team around him, and the others around them. It was a surging pulsing mass of emotion.
Even Cole, whose normally stoic attitude couldn’t be dented by anything, looked to be struggling to keep himself cool. He looked over at James and the two of them shared a moment grinning at each other like lunatics, they didn’t have to say anything but they both just knew they had the same feeling. We are actually freaking here!
Once inside the stadium, these feelings grew even more. The place was immense, with people cheering on every side as they snaked their way to join the other countries. They were one of the last to enter and so many other athletes were cheering and calling out to them as they moved to their spot. It was so overwhelming and difficult to make out in the mass of sound and people.
James could barely keep himself together as they walked slowly around the stadium. The crowd was a black mass of flickering lights. The roar of it all hit James like a thunderclap, pushing his memories back to that other time, that other life. He hadn’t expected it to hit him so hard.
The ever-astute Cole gripped his shoulder and spoke into his ear loud enough so he could hear him. “You okay?” He asked, sounding genuinely concerned. All James could do was nod in response. As he did so he realised it was true, he was okay, this was incredible. Cole gave him a long look in response, and James grinned, Cole grinned back in response, this was such a surreal moment for both of them.
They got to their place in the mass of athletes and James took a breath for what felt like the first time since they’d stepped out into the arena. It was a slow process but eventually, he felt himself calming down. The adrenaline working its way out of his system.
“Hey! Fancy meeting you here?” A familiar voice called out to him from the crowd. He turned and saw Sirius walking over to him with the girl from the rink. She was taller than she looked on the ice, but still half a head shorter than himself, with strong cheekbones and sparkling green eyes. The large puffer jacket that all the Canadians were wearing looked enormous on her tiny frame, but despite that, she still managed to look beautiful in an effortless way. She was looking at James with a hint of a smile on her lips. He didn’t know what to make of her, but he gave her a small nod of his head in greeting that made her smile widen.

A young boy named Bren sits at the feet of his parents and listens to their dreams for his future.
He listens intently as he is a good son who only wants to do well by them.
The family cat purrs deeply in his lap as the boy absently curls his fingers deep into his fur. He turns his head to look at the fire and watches the flames dance.
A wizard in fine robes comes to their humble homes and announces gradnly to the boy that he has great potential. His parents are thrilled by this and happily send him on his way, with a great feel ing of pride. Bren beams at them.
“I will do you proud, I will become a great wizard and serve the empire faithfully.”
A broken man named Bren sits in a dark cell. His mind wandering, never staying on one thing. He watches the light of the lantern as it approaches, flickering fitfully, like flames. Within that dancing light he sees figures, hears screams, and he shuts his eyes against it and curls himself up tighter.
A hand touches his shoulder, it is gentle and warm. He opens his eye a crack and he is in darkness again, but no longer alone. The flickering light has gone to haunt someone else.
Moonlight streaks through the small window and bathes them both in a steady glow. He can see now the stranger is a woman, her long silver hair looks wild around her face, the gentle light casting her in an aura of silver, making her look like the heavens had sent her. But that can’t be right, Bren deserves nothing but this dank pit.
“You are lost, have been for some time.” She says to him in a whisper of a voice, so scratchy it’s obvious that it’s barely been used. “Let me save you as I cannot do for myself.” She brushes a thum against his cheek, wiping away the tear that clung there. All at once Bren is filled with warmth and light. Like bright sunshine it burns away the fog coding his mind, and he sees for the first time in years what has to be done.
A man names Bren no longer, breaks free of the shackles placed upon him by others, and gives himself a new purpose. To undo the mistakes, to put right the wrongs, and save his parents' souls if not his own. For who could save a condemned man like him?

I know there’s a ton going on and I’m only seeing like 3% of it because I’m not on discord and I don’t follow a lot of the community back and forth, but I just wanted to say something about this “if you don’t like a fic, don’t read it!” defense that I’ve seen a whole lot, which seems to be completely missing the point that this is a COMMUNITY safety issue, not about a person’s personal safety reading one fic. Macro, not micro. Systematic, not incidental.
If there’s a fic/trope/genre that groups find truly hurtful (not simply a matter of LIKE, I might remind. Not a taste or preference. An actual feeling of dismissal and hurt), yes, they can just not read it. Sure. But if that same fic or group of fics is being discussed, is being celebrated, is being thrust in their face, it’s something larger than just “I won’t read it.” It’s a set of landmines they have to perpetually navigate. It’s a constant negotiating of your anger and discomfort vs. your enjoyment of the space in which this fic interacts, and the people that interact with it. And ESPECIALLY when those affected speak out and talk about the issue, to be dismissed and insulted and gaslit about jealousy and victimhood? That’s not a single fic issue. It’s not a single author issue. That’s a COMMUNITY ISSUE. The whole COMMUNITY has a safety problem. THAT’S what is being talked about here. Not preferences or kink shaming or correctly placed trigger warnings. See the larger picture when people are pointing it out.
#bee talks fandom#I love James and Lily more than life kkkk#I’ve been in this fandom a looooong time#implosions happen often#they are usually stupid#this is not stupid

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to best convey my own thoughts on the week's events on the Jily Discord.
Firstly, I want to acknowledge the incredible individuals who have taken the time to valiantly and patiently explain why DE!James as a trope makes a majority of minority, Jewish and POC readers feel incredibly uncomfortable and unseen. Authors who write this trope — I hope you have taken to time to actually read what these individuals have already said to you and take the time to process, that despite whatever your intentions are with the fic, you are directly hurting those in your community.
If you know me, you know I’m literally the most non-confrontational person. I don’t like to be involved in any drama, I don’t ever wish to fuel any existing fires. But I know that I draw the line when others voices are not being heard.
As a POC I’ve grown up in a world where racism is intertwined with everything I do - it’s horrible, yes, but it’s a fact. We still live in a world where because you are “different” in some background or way, you are targeted that reason. It’s the look you get when you open your homemade lunch and everyone scrunches your nose in distaste, it’s when people ask “where REALLY are you from”, it’s the act of someone calling you a different name because they “can’t pronounce” yours. It’s all this and a bajillion more tiny cuts that many people don’t see on a daily basis, won’t understand unless they’ve also had these small cuts bogging down on their lives.
Fandom sometimes is the only place that we can escape to and paint our own realities — where characters of color can be acknowledged for who they are, fight injustices, that is end of that. By promoting a narrative where the relationship of a marginalized population (aka muggleborns, a captive, a slave) and an aggressor (aka death eater, master) is romanticized, you are actively fueling the years and years of racial discrimination.
And let me just say that again so I can be so utterly clear: By writing a DE!James fic, whether you know it or not, you are saying a marginalized population needs be saved through means of a toxic, even Stockholm syndrome-esque, relationship.
Please really take the time to have that sink in. Read that again and then again. Tell me now, how is that okay? How presuming is it to believe that by creating a relationship like this, you are not highlighting the horrors of history for many POC, Jewish and minority readers? Even more, the horrors our own ancestors had to endure with no choice.
Look I don’t mean to be judgmental of those who have had the privilege of never having to think about this. If you’ve truly never thought about this, thank you for reading this and I hope you can find it in yourself to learn more about the silent (and not so silent) oppressions that many of us have to deal with. I hope this conversation highlights that yes, we have common interests, but also that our backgrounds are each beautifully different — and we all need to learn from each other.
But I’m not so naive enough to think that many will take this well —- so this bit is for you. I am not asking for you for an apology, nor do I think that my post alone is going to solve this issue. I doubt that (if this is the category you’re placing yourself in) you will actually have the self awareness to do this…. but if there’s just one thing you do, I hope it’s this: take the time out of your day to ask a POC, Jewish reader or someone who identifies as a minority, how you can be better. I will gladly volunteer myself for this because while I know I don’t have all the answers to the world, I know so many other POC, Jewish and minority creators on here are being bombarded with extreme asks. I’d be happy to guide you to other resources but you need to make the first step. Acknowledge that you never thought of the hurt this would bring others and ask what can you do.
No seriously. Ask someone who has been hurt what you can do.
Find that ridiculous? Well, I implore you to think of your best friend. If your best friend came to you one day and had a large cut on her knee, actively bleeding —what would you say? Maybe it’s “omg so-and-so how did this happen?” Or “Are you okay?” But then… isn’t your next question “How can I help?”
That is the same question I’m hoping you will ask, because whether or not you can see it, this scenario with your best friend is how you should be treating everyone else as well. The answers I will have (and the resources I may link you to) are going to be hard and you probably won’t like them. But if after, you wish to continue on whatever path, despite knowing you are actively hurting people and their own history then at least do me the courtesy and never interact with this blog. We all just want to be valued, heard and feel safe in this online community. It starts by having these hard conversations and being willing to admit that you are wrong.

Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have fewer than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line. Then tag some people to take part.
Thanks to @theroomofreq for the tag. This was an interesting one to look back on some of my earliest work. My favourite is Heart shaped box as I like how it sets up the whole story. For the two that I co-wrote I have shared the opening lines of my part. Tagging @petalstofish, @blitheringmcgonagall, @mppmaraudergirl @sweeethinny @littlerose13writes @alrightginger
1. Come away with me
Lily lay staring at the skylight, and watched the patch of sky turn from black to indigo. She just gazed without moving, hardly even blinking as it gradually grew lighter and lighter.
2. Saving James
The Holyhead Harpies’ annual friends and family barbecue was always a fantastic day, especially for the Potters. It was one of the few times James saw his mum and dad relax and enjoy themselves outside of a Weasley gathering.
3. Grounded
James felt the surge of adrenaline as he heard the roar of the crowd intensify over the wind whistling past his ears. This was what he loved about the game. The crowds, the passion, the everything or nothing feeling.
4. Sins of the fathers
Teddy stood on platform 9¾ with his gran looking around anxiously. He could see families saying their goodbyes all around him and getting on the train already. He looked up at the clock and resisted the urge to bounce on the balls of his feet.
5. Mr. March
Lily stared at her office calendar again, wondering once more if she should probably take it down. It wasn’t exactly PC and, even though she had checked that nobody was offended by it, she didn’t know if it was exactly acceptable to have a calendar of shirtless male firemen in a workplace anymore.
6. Where do we go from here?
Ginny was no longer sure how many days had passed since the end of the battle. Her grief for lost friends, for Fred, kept a hold of her and stopped her from thinking about the passing of time beyond sleeping, waking and eating. She was desperately trying to hold herself together drawing strength from her mother’s example.
7. Breathless
When Jamie ran in from the cold outside — her face shining brightly from the joy of running with her friends — she spotted Lily straight away. There weren’t many redheads in Gryffindor and none with quite the same shade of hair as her. It always drew Jamie’s attention, like a flickering candle seen out of the corner of your eye.
8. The fabulous baker brothers
Lily Evans had no problem walking around London. Her flatmates would always tell her to be careful, take the train, the bus, or even an Uber. Like she could afford to take an Uber every day for goodness sake.
9. Promises
Remus walked into the hotel function room feeling completely unprepared for the scene in front of him. For countless times that evening he considered just turning around and going home. It was already quite late, the invitation had said three hours earlier so most people were already well on their way to plastered and making fools of themselves. He grabbed a couple of shots as a server carrying a silver tray made their way past him. He knocked them back one after the other, not caring what they were.
10. Heart shaped box
For Lily Evans, Monday’s were like preparing for combat. Her perfectly applied makeup was her war paint, her carefully selected clothes a suit of armour. Her lesson planner, battle strategies. Her pens, her chosen weapons.
But it wasn’t her students who had her wound up tighter than a clockwork toy, it was her infuriating colleague, her rival, her nemesis.
11. After dark
Lily threw her pen down on the table in frustration.
“This guy is completely innocent. How on Earth can we not find a way to prove it? He’s going to crumble on the stand.”
“He won’t,” James stated convincingly, “because I’ll coach him on every possible scenario.”
12. House hunting
I love it, let’s get it!”
Lily tried her best not to roll her eyes at James’ enthusiastic shout as they parked up outside another house. They had already looked at four that day. Another one of many days looking at disappointing options, and she was beginning to wonder if they would ever find something in their budget that met all her specific requirements that were not at all unreasonable, because if you were going to buy a house it had to be the right house.
13. Midnight marauders
“Gryffindor!”
The word seemed to hang in the air for a prolonged amount of time, such was the complete silence that followed. Sirius didn’t dare look at the Slytherins, or to his new housemates. He was frozen. Stunned. That tiny glimmer of hope he had created and grown on the train ride here had been found by the sorting hat, and pronounced to the school.
14. The devil wears elf shoes (colab with alrightginger)
Once upon a time, James Potter had loved Christmas. As a child, he adored the sparkling lights on the Christmas trees, the smell of cinnamon and spice from the kitchen, the anticipation before the big day. The way perfect strangers would be nice to one another. He couldn’t wait to sit at the enormous dinner table with just his family, eating way too much food. He even loved the way his mum would get squiffy on sherry and start singing along to the Les Mis soundtrack. He loved the laughter. But not anymore.
15. In sickness and in Sparta (colab with alrightginger)
James and Sirius had a reputation. A notorious reputation for throwing the best parties. The type of parties that those lucky enough to attend would talk about for weeks, even months later. Assuming they could remember, of course. Sirius and James would entertain and delight with a mixture of funny stories and games they had invented that everyone had to join in on.
16. Dancing in the dark
Remus was waiting at the international arrivals gate at JFK airport when he felt his phone buzz, he already knew who it would be before he even looked at the screen.
17. Charlie's big secret
The Burrow was its usual bustling hub of Weasley activity as it was every first Sunday of the month. Of course it was not going to be all that long until they were celebrating again for her birthday on the 11th. Harry was outside with the children, supervising a game made up by them (mainly Teddy) that involved kicking a ball as far as they could and then asking Harry to summon it back.
18. Reunion
The Marauder’s bar, Soho, had once upon a time been a grotty dive bar, named one of those all too common pub names, like the Red Lion , or the Prince of Wales , or the King’s Arms.
Whatever it was once named. However bad the smell had been, with the horrendous sticky carpet, and painted wallpaper walls, all of that had been ripped out, replaced by polished wooden floorboards, and clean whitewashed walls.
19. High school hopes
Being the Queen Bee of the school seemed to be every girls dream. The Queen Bee had her pick of the hottest guys, went to all the coolest parties, and sat at every break surrounded by her admirers, or at least that’s what it looked like to any outsider.
The reality was somewhat different when you were inside that special circle. Brigitte was still the queen, but she was also an insecure mess who required constant praise and admiration, or she would likely find a way to make your day, or even year, into a living hell.
20. Summer heat
Lily is thankful when the evening finally hits their little cottage, and the searing sun slowly sinks behind the trees that border their quaint little garden. The sun may be gone but it leaves its heat behind, like the lingering smell of perfume on clothes. Like a thick blanket that covers everything, refusing to lift in the stagnant air.
