Headcanon: What if the Celestial Spirit King was one of the gods who punished Zeref?

SPOILERS FOR UP TO FAIRY TAIL CHAPTER 453,  FAIRY TAIL ZERO AND EPISODE  74 OF FAIRY TAIL 2014 

For the longest time I believed that the Celestial Spirit King was going to be the last person Natsu battles (but only because I’m a Nalu fangirl and wanted the celestial spirit king to deem Lucy worthy of living with the celestial spirits and Natsu would fight to bring her back to Fairy Tail)

However, after hearing the-archangel-of-zeref’s theory of Zeref not being the last villain (click the link if you want to read) that I thought it would be possible for the Celestial Spirit King to be one (if not the last guy) the guild faces. Why? Because it’s possible that the Celestial King was one of the gods, if not THE god who cursed Zeref.

One thing you have to understand about the Celestial Spirit King is this:

His role is never specified. While other characters are introduced to be foils, protagonists or antagonists, the Celestial Spirit King is neither. Out of 451 chapters, the Celestial Spirit King has appeared only 3 times. However, this doesn’t make him a minor character like Jason because the last time the king appeared, it was in a battle against Zeref’s demons and it was hinted that he an unclear background with Mard Geer and Tartarus.  Therefore he’s more important than you think.

So now there’s a huge possibility that the Celestial Spirit King (I’m going to start writing C.S.K. to make it easier on myself) has a correlation with Zeref.

First, Zeref comes from a town named Mildian. 

In Rave Master- this town was a city carved out of time. Though it doesn’t appear to be the same, it’s interesting that Mashima gave the city the same name as the one in Rave Master, especially since the first topics introduced are life, death and it’s connection to magic. 

But let’s assume that Mashima gave this city the name Mildian because the subject of time is important. 

In the bottom we see that Zeref is lecturing the people on his “R system” On his board, we see phrases of the moon. The panel above that one explains that Zeref had done research on life and death and somehow this led to investigate space. 

And of course, to create the Eclipse project he would have had to have done research on space. But he’s not punished for creating “the R system.” It’s not until he’s close to finishing the Eclipse project that the Gods made their move.

The Eclipse Project is a magic item that allows people to travel through when there is a solar or lunar eclipse. This gate also requires dark magic from Zeref and Celestial Spirit Magic. 

Zeref was cursed for “trying to bring back the dead” but why did the Gods wait until he almost finished this theory over ‘the R system?’ Plus the Eclipse Project wasn’t going to change the sequence of life and death; it would change the flow of time (maybe this is why the name Mildian is important). 

And yet Zeref was punished for this theory (remember he hadn’t brought anyone back from the dead so it’s not because he changed the natural process of life) while Princess Hisui, Future Lucy and Future Rogue were NOT cursed with Ankhserum’s wrath for actually USING the Eclipse Project. 

Why does this matter? Because the C.S.K. is not just a God in the Celestial world; he has some effect on life and the flow of time in Earthland.

When the C.S.K. is first introduced, he uses water to summon himself.

He’s not like Aquarius who needs to be summoned in water in order to come through. He absorbs a vast quantity of water to merely appear. In other words, he borrowed some life from earth to get through.

And as we learned when Mavis and Zeref first meet, he released dark magic that not only destroyed the forest but that also absorbed water as well. 

Because of this scene, we know water is considered to be life and the C.S.K. can have control over in it in Earth Land. So in a way, he is a god of life.

In this same episode (it’s hard to tell in the manga) but when the C.S.K. first makes his appearance, time stops and we know this because Loke’s glasses are frozen in place and don’t fall onto the ground until the C.S.K. leaves. Therefore hinting that he has some control over time as well.

While we’re on the subject of Loke, let’s compare these scenes.

Both spirits see their ‘errors’ as a form of sin, and sin by definition is “a rebellion against God.”

The Celestial Spirit King is a god who not only has some control over Earth Land elements but he’s also a man who upholds laws. He is a man who looks at the crime committed rather than the criminal who committed it. Law is law and if it is broken, there is a punishment. And from what we’ve seen with Leo, consequences can be taken too far and that’s probably what’s happened with Mavis and Zeref. The Gods just didn’t know when to stop punishing people. The C.S.K. was going to let Leo die and only changed when he saw how far Lucy’s love for a celestial spirit went. 

But the way Loke is forgiven shows us that despite the C.S.K. making a mistake, he is still prideful and refuses to acknowledge that he was wrong. He blames the law but will make an “exception.” 

The reason I bring this up is because if the Gods are prideful, just like the C.S.K. then they would never admit that they were wrong. At some point during the 400 years, perhaps the Gods realized that by allowing Zeref to live, the world was becoming a more hectic place. But by simply allowing Zeref to die, they would admit that they’ve committed an error. 

Which brings us back to why Princess Hisui, Future Lucy, and Future Rogue were not punished for using the Eclipse project.

It’s hard to pinpoint an exact reason for any of them, but my theory is this. If the Gods had realized that they made a mistake by giving Zeref immortality, but did not want to admit that they did, then having Princess Hisui kill Zeref instead would benefit them greatly. By having Hisui use the Eclipse Project, she would kill Zeref before he discovered the connections of life and magic; the Gods would never have to interfere but their secrets could still be safe. 

What would it mean if the Celestial Spirit King was one of the Gods who punished Zeref? 

If the C.S.K. was one of the Gods who punished Zeref, we would have to look at Ankhserum’s wrath with a new pair of eyes. 

Ankhserum’s wrath- 

What I don’t understand about this curse is why one of the side effects is immortality. For a God who needs to keep the flow of life and death in order, wouldn’t making someone immortal throw this progress off-balance?  

But then I remembered this-

and it reminded me of the celestial spirits

Celestial Spirits don’t die when they’re attacked on Earth. They merely go back to celestial spirit world to rest and regain energy. But even Loke survived three years without having to go back to the celestial spirit world. Perhaps Zeref and Mavis worked the same- only instead of surviving off celestial magic, they unintentionally use the life force they steal from others (kind of the C.S.K. who had to use water to come to Earth Land). This would mean they have more similarities to celestial spirits.

If that’s the case then maybe Zeref and Mavis weren’t immortal but living on celestial time.

From what we’ve seen, the C.S.K. does have some control over Earth land time and he possess the ability to change people’s bodies.

It was Zeref himself who said that he was immortal and that Mavis and himself wouldn’t be able to kill one another.

But as we see, he was proven wrong just a few scenes later.

 Seeing how he seems to be the only one with this curse, it could be that some of his own self-analyzes are wrong; including being immortal.

Celestial Spirits aren’t immoral; Loke has shown us this. But celestial spirits appear to be immortal because they run on a different time flow. 

1 day in the celestial spirit world = 3 months in Earth land time.

4 days = 1 year

??? = 400 years

You would multiple 400 x 4 and figure out that 400 years =  1600 days. Assuming that a celestial year is also 365 days, we divide 1600 days by 365 and get about 4.38. 

If Zeref was running on celestial time, then technically only 4-5 years of his life has passed. For a young man as himself, we’ve seen that not even seven years can put a strong dent in how some people look.

Zeref can still look young - or look like he hasn’t aged at all- if only 4 years of his life have passed.

If the Celestial Spirit King is a God who put Ankhersam’s curse on Mavis, what could this mean for Fairy Heart….

I remember awhile back a lot of people had theories that Lucy would be the next Lumen Histoire. 

If my headcanon is correct, then it is possible.

If Ankhseram’s wrath does contain celestial magic, then it’s possible that Zeref might want to create his own Fairy Heart, using Lucy as his infinite source of magic.

Remember Zeref denies wanting Mavis’s body in his meeting with the Spriggan 12; and we’re reminded that Fairy Heart is magic.

We know Lucy has hidden magic stored within her (after all she was able to bring over nine spirits- five of them being golden keys- into her world when in this arc she would only summon one at a time). 

 Fairy Heart is infinite magic and a world of celestial magic exists in another dimension. I think it would very possible that Zeref would try to use Lucy’s body as a portal to obtain this unlimited source of magic. 

I have other theories for this head canon but I’ll stop right here because this was supposed to be about the Celestial Spirit King and his possible involvement with Zeref and the story. Hopefully we’ll get out answers soon because I’m dying to find out, not just what the Celestial Spirit King really has to do with Zeref, but the other mysteries of Fairy Tail as well.
