FREDO x MIXINO 069 OUT NOW
Tumblr media
In the heart of France, where the city's pulse synchronizes with the beat of the night, stands Fredo. A french Lyon dj fascinated by house and italo music. He recently joined Gare du Nord's family, becoming the third member of this musical project, active between Lyon and Paris. Fredo could play different styles and his passion lead him around a lot of sounds, always in link with the Gare du Nord’s universe. A sonic vandal who serves up some downright dance-floor degeneracy; a bumpy rave treatment for these uncertain times, drawing from techno, hard house, 90s energy and the trippier elements of trance. MIXINO#69 is a must listen for those who seek solace in the rhythm.

DOCUMENTARY | FOUNDING FATHERS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF HIP HOP
State pronti ad ascoltare la leggenda di Grandmaster Flowers e KC The Prince of Soul, Disco Twins, DJ Divine, DJ Lance, Nu Sounds, King Charles, Pete “DJ” Jones, DJ Hollywood, Charisma Funk e molti altri.
‘Founding Fathers’ is a fascinating history of less known djs, emcees and promoters in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, and their roles in hip-hop and NYC sound system culture. While the Bronx is the acknowledged birthplace of hip-hop and home to its greatest and most storied pioneers, ‘Founding Fathers’ presents the largely untold story of folks exploring a side of hip hop culture that is not often exposed. Be prepared to listen to legends like Grandmaster Flowers e KC The Prince of Soul, Disco Twins, DJ Divine, DJ Lance, Nu Sounds, King Charles, Pete “DJ” Jones, DJ Hollywood, Charisma Funk and a bunch of others who were putting it down in the other boroughs during the original school/park jam era. Narrated by Chuck D of Public Enemy, this film is a factual report about unsung heroes, who contributed to the foundational principals of the music known today as Hip Hop. It will transport you to a journey back to the early underground disco days of the streets and parks throughout New York City. Take an hour and a half and enjoy.

PHOTOGRAPHY | LISA LEONE: THE GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP
Photography has always played a large part in music culture, helping to define the aesthetic of artists and genres. Someone who’s been in the midst of this, since the early nineties is Bronx born photographer Lisa Leone. From Nas in the first studio recordings for what would become “Ilmatic”, to Snoop Doog on the set of his first video, to Grandmaster Flash or Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean on a Harlem rooftop, Leone’s photographs are open portals to the sounds, places and, most important, the people who forged and continue to influence the energy that is hip hop movement. Her photography represented a culture in transition, a sort of “pre-fame” photographs of hip-hop, before it drifted toward the mainstream and the global expansion. Amazing stuff, particularly for a viewer today, who is aware of the significance these moments were to hold. Something special shines through every images - we recommend you to see the entire gallery, by visiting Leone’s website here below.

PHOTOGRAPHY / BRUCE GILDEN
Bruce Gilden stands as one of photography’s most important contemporary figures, celebrated for his raw and powerful portrayals of life on the city streets. Known for his confrontational close-ups, few photographers possess a style as striking and recognizable. He forged his reputation on the streets of his home city New York, transcribing the theatre of everyday life in his distinct manner. Shot barely an arm’s length from his subjects, using flash, he observes ordinary life on the streets with profound fascination. His early works are visceral, compelling, pervaded with humor and grit. After achieving success with his depictions of NYC, he continued with various projects in Haiti, Japan, Italy, India, Russia, in the marginalized communities in the English Midlands. Gilden may be five and a half decades into a remarkable career, but he remains dedicated to his craft, continuing to work in the same uncompromising manner as he did when he first picked up a camera, whilst constantly hunting for new streets to explore.

NEW MIX OUT NOW / BOB CORSI x MIXINO #67
Say hello to Bob Corsi. For those not familiar, he’s a Rome based dj, producer, promoter and vinyl maniac. He crossed over three decades of music in the city, agitating the Roman dancefloors. He’s one of the founders of Goodfellas, head honcho of Penny Records as well as music supervisor for cinema and television. With a large spectrum of musical influences, his dj sets range from soul, latin, rhythm & blues to funk, reggae, afrobeats, calypso, cumbia, jazz, cosmic disco and sampladelic relics. A unique vibe for the crowd which you may have experienced at parties like Magnetica, Go Bang, Tropical Maracana and Rootsvibes. Tracklist artists like Compass Point All Stars, African Head Charge, Bunny "Striker" Lee together with Mina and Franco Califano Mad give a good flavour of what to expect here: a surprising forty minutes journey into dub territories and its contaminations.

DOCUMENTARY / JOY DIVISION [2007]
Film magnifico, band unica - buona visione.
On June 4 1976, four young men from post-industrial Manchester, England went to see a Sex Pistols show at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall. Inspried by the gig, they formed what was to become one of the world’s most influential bands, Joy Division. Featuring the unprecedented participation of all the surviving band members (now known as New Order), ‘Joy Division’ examines the band’s story as depicted through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audiotapes. From director Grant Gee, this film has an incredibly magnetic force, with poignant narratives from Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, as well as accounts from Throbbing Gristle musician Genesis P. Orridge, late legendary Factory Records owner Tony Wilson, iconic Factory Records graphic artist Peter Saville, photographer/filmmaker Anton Corbijn, Belgian journalist Annik Honoré and others. ‘Joy Division’ is a fresh visual account of a unique time and place, chronicling a time of great social, political and urban change in England, in the late 70s. It tells the untold story of four common guys, who transcended economic and cultural barriers to produce an enduring musical legacy. Amazing movie, unique band - enjoy.
‘Well I could call out when the going gets tough / The things that we’ve learnt are no longer enough / No language, just sound, that’s all we need know / To synchronise love to the beat of the show.’ - Transmission [1979]

PHOTOGRAPHY - MICHAEL WOLF: TOKYO COMPRESSION
Michael Wolf was born in Germany and grown in the United States. He lived and photographed a long time in Cina, focusing his work on peoples cultural identity. In 'Tokyo Compression' he shows the uncomfortable reality of modern society, capturing short instants of human life within the Tokyo subway. Wolf says: “the photographs represent chiefly the tragedy of the human condition. What you see is not the result of a natural catastrophe. Man is responsible for this himself – a dreadful system for people, and by people”.
