There’s something really important to me about the dynamic between Hijikata and Chizuru when you’re not romancing him.

Like when he went to visit her at her home in Edo to give her a rundown of what’s happening and that they were moving on.

Or on Souma’s route when he pushed him and her to be together.

Now I’m not 100% sure this one really happened or it was something I created in my head, or saw in a fanfic, or it was a video of one of the games on YouTube. It was set after the events of Chizuru dressing up and going undercover and she was walking with him.

Somehow the conversation got to a point where they were talking about finding Chizuru a husband and making sure he was ACTUALLY a good one to her. PLEASE tell me I’m not going crazy and that this actually happened!

Anyway I just think it’s adorable.

If anyone's been wondering what I've been up to lately, I've just been busy dealing with life and projects on the side. Time creeps up on you, and before you know the summer is already halfway-through. I could swear I had things in mind I wanted to do....

I've been so tired lately, both physically and mentally, while dealing with things both on- and offline, that I can't really bring myself to focus on the things I want to focus on for as long I wish I could. I'm also not very good at posting small talk posts out of the blue, so I tend to go quiet if I have nothing interesting to share. //sob

Translation & Subbing: on temporary hiatus because I'm busy with other things (1 subbing project WIP)

Heisuke hen tweets are bookmarked, but again, I need time and energy to get through them.

Art: working on a couple of long term projects, including the Hakuouki zine. I'm not committing to anything else for now.

I've since also acquired all the Heisuke hen merch that I ordered (random bromides were a little weird-- not enough Hijikatas for my taste), so I'll make that post about selling them at some point as well.

I also got a late birthday present for myself. ( @rabidrekijo, this is (partially) your doing - Thank you). He's missing his base and got a few scratches in hidden places, but otherwise, he's in great condition.

Ah, yes. This. I've been having premonitions for awhile now.

(Premonitions as in pattern recognition I swear I'm in touch with reality)

I want to voice my support for you, Yomi, but I also want to take this chance to voice some concerns I've had for awhile. Widemushroom has made me uncomfy for awhile now. I've really just been waiting for something like this to happen. I know the standard protocol in that situation is to block, but I've had enough (for 17 lifetimes) with abusive, manipulative, and generally toxic (I hate that term) people to know that you don't leave people you care about with people you yourself avoid. I hate gossip and speaking badly about people without a constructive purpose or concrete evidence, but I've also been in situations where refusing to point out red flags has left me abandoned when friends of mine who don't see them eventually choose the problematic (hate that term too) person over me. There are people who say that if that can happen then they weren't good friends, but that's not true. There were a whole lot of amazing, kind, and intelligent people in Jonestown.

I absolutely don't want a fandom culture full of judgement and negativity, but it's also true that this post comes as a HUGE relief to me. Negativity isn't usually known as a source of joy, but uneasiness is inevitable in an environment where you can't tell whether or not anyone else is even aware of a threat you've perceived. Is there an elephant in the room or is it more like a little ant only I've noticed?

This is the part of the post where I would propose a solution to this problem I've described if I had one. I do not. I'm also autistic and I do NOT have the script for this stuff. I don't think I'm advocating for more shit talking because that sounds horrible, but I'm at least commending hiraethum for calling this out and Yomi for opening up about what's going on. I can understand how in bigger fandoms it's probably best to block and mute and not call anyone out, but we're a small community and we're all so familiar with each other that that doesn't really work. I really like all of you, and I don't want to lose anyone because someone who doesn't understand why can tell I've blocked someone else or am just generally giving them the cold shoulder. We're all so highly visible to each other, for better or worse. Because of that, I feel like we're going to end up in more situations as a fandom where we have to confront issues rather than just being free to block and ignore. Again, I'm completely lacking any idea of what that looks like. If there's someone who gets it and can send me a nice objective list of rules I'd love that so so much.

But yeah, I'm really sorry that you've had to go through this, Yomi. I am really glad you already included the thumbs up guy because I was already seeing him in my head. That really is the only response here. God, if people only wrote things that people in general would find interesting I'd have absolutely nothing to read.

If you ever want to rant or anything (I know I'd need to,) my DMs are open. I've unfortunately dealt with a lot of similar situations, so hopefully if you do, I can respond in a way that isn't completely ignorant.

right so like, I lost my original account (as custarii, as some may know of it) due to some poor decision choices in the internet (long story that ended up in hacking and whatnot, seriously be careful of stuff you download online, and that served as a reminder to not do it again), and SO--

I also run-by as @/baronpistachio on ao3, read some interesting works I'd taken in as an interesting character essay/digest, to only find out that there's actually stuff going on (srlsy I'm too sleep deprived and caffeine-addled to have noticed it)

One of my favourite scenes in all of Hakuoki is when Kondou trains Chizuru to fight.

Chizuru isn't some master swordsman - that just isn't her role in the story. Instead, she has tenacity, willpower, and a desire to protect people.

You can get this scene by choosing to tell Kondou "I want to watch over everyone while you're gone." In context, she only means temporarily. Subtextually, particularly if you leave Toshi's route near the end, it brings to mind his death in every route and creates the idea that Chizuru is his successor in the attitude of being a spirited defender of others. He expands on her basic swordsmanship training, but teaches her mental strength in the process that is required both in and out of battle.

Chizuru also thinks to herself that she feels at home with the Shinsengumi now thanks to this experience, which contributes to this warm feeling of Kondou being a paternal figure to her and passing on his wisdom and in some ways his role to her before his untimely demise.
