STEALING GIFS IS BAD AND YOU SHOULDN’T DO IT.

that shouldn’t need saying, but apparently it does. this is absolutely rife within tog fandom and people are getting braver and braver with it. and i’m tired. i know other tog gifmakers are tired too. 

i’m sick of hearing the “some people don’t know that reposting is bad” excuse. they do know. they know. stealing is bad. everybody knows that stealing is bad. it doesn’t matter what you’re stealing, the point is that it’s BAD and you shouldn’t do it. 

so much hard work goes into making gifs and putting gifsets together, and there is no excuse for taking all of that hard work and reposting it, when the simpler and easier option is to reblog from the creator and give them the exposure that they deserve for their hard work. 

once we’ve had our work stolen, we then have to decide whether to approach the thief and ask them politely to take the stolen post down (and run the risk of being blocked so that next time, we can’t see our work being stolen), or to go through the painstaking process of asking tumblr to remove the stolen content.

we shouldn’t have to do this. 

i don’t want to start naming names or “calling people out” but i do feel like people need to be aware that we are having our work stolen, and sometimes the thieves even have the audacity to claim gifs as their own. a ton of tog gifmakers have had their work stolen, and reposted with the caption “my creation”. surely people can see that this is wrong? surely you can understand why we’re upset?

if you see a gifset that you like, please please please just reblog it. don’t save a gif and repost it unless you have the original creator’s consent. always credit the original creator. have some respect for the hard work that goes into creating content for YOU. 

the “i didn’t know that reposting was bad” excuse doesn’t wash with me any more. you did know. you do know. stealing is bad. don’t do it.

please stop stealing our content

since it has come to my attention that people are stealing the shiet that my lovely mutuals have created, i would just like to remind everyone that:

1. people create gifs for FREE

gif-creators spend COUNTLESS hours (if not days) on perfecting their creations, and by STEALING them (and yes i do mean stealing, not just reposting) you are disregarding all the time and effort they put into their gifset. 

2. we don’t put watermarks on our gifs because we trust you

most of us (gif-creators) don’t put watermarks on our creations because it’s just so chunky and ugly but if people continue to steal our shiets, istg we will start putting watermarks on to prevent people from doing so. and even then y’all thirsty-for-gifs thots will steal them.

3. it’s not that hard to reblog, and reposting IS stealing

this bulletpoint speaks for itself. just reblog mate, it’s not gonna kill you. and it’s so much easier than saving then re-uploading.

4. it is within a gif-creator’s right to report the content-stealers

according to tumblr’s terms of service, “you retain ownership you have of any intellectual property you post to tumblr” (point raised by the lovely @verafarmiga). so yes, if you see any of your own content that has been stolen, please report the content-stealers. and if it is your mutual’s content that has been stolen, INFORM THEM! they’ll appreciate it. 

5. dear content-stealers, you can create your own gifs

believe it or not, it is actually not that hard to gif. i used to be a lil shiet too and rely on other people’s gifs until i decided that i had enough and cleaned myself up. if you’re a beginner gif-creator, i suggest that you check out @yeahps. they have a lot of useful tutorials on giffing, and it’s actually not that hard. or you can even ask me how to gif! i would love to help out. stop stealing, and start creating.

6. we, as gif-creators, should help each other out and not let this go unnoticed

i am so sick and tired of people stealing other people’s shiet. please, please, PLEASE signal boost this so we can do something about it.

also tip:

for y’all paranoid gifmakers out there who would like to prevent people from stealing your shiet by right-clicking and saving your images, here’s a way to disable the right-click. (idea inspired by @verafarmiga. check out her desktop theme: you get 70 years of bad luck if you steal / repost her gifs.)

Call out reposters or inform the rightful OPs of this kind of behaviour in your fandoms if you come across it, and please support content creators!

🚨As a creator, having someone steal your work really kills your motivation. You don’t want to write, you don’t want to draw, you don’t want to gif...because what’s the point if someone is just going to repost what you’ve done and take the credit. I can’t stress this enough REBLOG SOMETHING IF YOU APPRECIATE IT! LIKE IT!! COMMENT ON IT!!! JUST DON’T STEAL IT!!!!! Also newsflash...adding a filter, cropping the image, adding a few new sentences or any other mild alternation does not somehow suddenly make it yours🚨

If you’re seeing this, why not spread some positivity today? 😄 Reach out to the artists, editors and fanfic writers you love to tell them how much you enjoy what they do! Encourage the content creators in your fandom, you could be the difference between them continuing or not. I promise it’ll mean so much to them!

Sorry dA’s crossposting system is a hot mess so I had to delete this and repost it to try and fix it. ugh why is that integration coded so badly ANYWAY so I did some art for the 2019 NaruSaku Zine (aka Vol. 2) This was one of the two in-zine works I did. I’d say sorry for the watermarks, but I’m not. If you want to see it without the watermark, it was in the zine (and mayyyybe I’ll add a smaller watermark one on my patreon if I feel like being nice)
