I don't consider Gray to be a comfort character, but he is a very comforting character.

He's arguably the most normal person in all of Fairy Tail's cast, he doesn't have a vice like Natsu and Erza with their overpowered nature, and whilst he is sexualised like Lucy, he's never objectified for it (outside of Juvia). He's dependable and his fights always feel incredibly grounded, and when there's a battle of ideals, he stands up and he proves that he's in the right.

He's a trauma survivor but that he's still unequivocally a good person and a strong one, too. (Unlike some other franchises who would treat a character similar to him as not so much).

The only person who diminishes him is Juvia, but that isn't his fault in anyway.

He's a nice, normal person and the fandom genuinely sleeps on how essential he is to the cast.

Without him providing that sense of normalcy, the quirkiness of the dragon slayers and Erza would get really tiring, really quickly. I would absolutely argue that he is one of Mashima's best characters, in spite of how he was handled towards the end.

He's up there with Elie from Rave Master in my mind, and I love him.

To prevent any possible confusion; I don’t think I ever mentioned that in a lot of my stories Gray has a hard time saying “I love you”. Now, when she finally accepted the fate of her (non) relationship with Gray; The white haired Ice made had seemingly appeared at her side by magic, the two of them were very much alike after all...

“Juvia is fine now that you are here Lyon-sama, would you like to keep her company for the rest of the evening? Maybe even tomorrow as well?” the blue haired female was throughly embarrassed and incredibly nervous at what she was implying, but love always seemed to make her bold.

As he opens his mouth to respond a loud but muffled shout sounds over head; “GRAAAAY!” Juvia’s face was reddening at the realization she must have left the window open when she was spying earlier. “Did that woman just say-?” his inquiry is interrupted by Juvia quickly grabbing onto his arm. “Lyon-Sama there is a love hotel just up the street from here, would you care to accompany Juvia there?”.

“Good God, would I ever!” Lyon exclaims, ecstatic at the prospect of his wildest dreams coming true. Quickly sweeping the water mage off her feet, shouting “Show me the way!”.

With a point of the finger the two race off into the night and the rain woman smiles as she thinks<i> “Juvia could definitely get used to this” as she clings to the man carrying her down the street.

”I still expect an Invite to the wedding!” calls a familiar voice from an alley they pass. Juvia recognizes it immediately, and she can’t help but laugh as she calls back to the woman “Definitely!”.
