ok, i was asked to elaborate and i will ABSOLUTELY do so. warning for spoilers for all 3 books, though!!
So just the baseline parallels between them are that in book one, they were both crushing hard on Shadow Star and that they both have an obsession with extraordinaries. in heat wave, though, rebecca's character is developed a lot more. so now we know that Rebecca's dad was an extraordinary that was killed by Simon Burke because he wouldn't cooperate with Simon's plans. So because of this, Rebecca dedicates her life and career to getting back at Simon. You know who else has a parent that was an extraordinary killed by Simon for his own selfish reasons and then decides to get revenge? Nick. They have almost the exact same backstory, motivations, and enemies, yet they STILL hate each other. I think this is either because they're so similar to one another that being together brings out the worst in both of them, OR Rebecca is just an asshole who likes bullying teenagers. with her it could go either way tbh.
Anyway, they're constantly seen rejecting the idea that the two of them are similar in any way, and I really believe that's because the other forces them to see the parts of themself that they don't like, all while refusing that that part of them exists in the first place. They're so interesting to me and very underrated imo
it is absolutely unacceptable that the parallels between nick and rebecca firestone aren't talked about more because they are in my head CONSTANTLY. HELP
