I am an avid yard sale shopper and sometimes you can actually get a deal if you know what to look for. Camping gear is no exception, but before you jump into buying that tent, here are some hints to solve some problems as well.
Before buying that tent, always check it out. If it is not setup, ask if you can set it up. Once up, check the seam of the tent. Also make sure the poles are not broken or repaired with the camper's friend (duct tape). Then, climb in and take a look at the clothes. Are there small pinholes that can be seen through the fabric? Is the tent floor safe and without tears?
Once all these questions were answered and you felt good about your purchase, your work was not done. The next step in this process is to set up your tent at home. Make sure you keep it in the shade and sweep it out inside the tent.
After that is done, mix a mixture of cold water and detergent soap designed for tents. Do not use household cleaners that contain perfume. These simple perfumes will attract insects and craters to your tent, which is something you do not want. In addition, household detergents will eliminate waterproofing, whatever you want.
After you have a detergent soap and water solution, apply it to your tent with a non-abrasive sponge. Clean the inside and the outside thoroughly. Then, rinse with cold water and allow to dry in the shade.
Next, address any seams that may be loose with the seam sealer. This seal is a liquid like glue applied to the seam. If you are applying for iridescent and / or floor sealer, be sure to apply only on the bright side of the tent.
If you have to install a seam sealer, let it dry before proceeding to the next step. Once the seal is dry, the next step is to waterproof the tent. This should be done every year and more often if the tent is heavily used. To do this, simply spray on any waterproofing product sold at outside gear stores. Allow to dry before packing.
The steps above are for a tent that is perfect but what if you buy a tent that has mildew problems? Well the answer is simple and starts with a good cleaning. If mildew persists, add 1 cup of salt and lemon juice to 1 gallon of water. Rub this solution on the tent until mildew is removed. Once this is done, allow it to dry completely before applying a coat of the waterproofing product.
