Highschool Musical 3 Rant.
I finally watched Highschool Musical 3, and... it was a boring, disappointing finale to my favourite DCOM trilogy.
I am a theatre kid, but I was never raised on the Highschool Musical Trilogy. I only discovered it about a year ago when “I Want It All” came up in my spotify recommended. I loved it, so much so that I roped my friend into doing a binge of all three. Unfortunately we got bored by the third one and decided to not finish it. I absolutely loved the first two movies and have rewatched them frequently since then. I also actively listen to the soundtracks just for fun. I asked my other friend, who has seen all of them, if I was really missing out on not watching the third one, and they told me I wasn’t, and that the only good song was I Want It All. So up until recently, I was content with not watching it. However, on my most recent binge of the first two movies, I felt like something was missing. I couldn’t ignore the fact that there was more story that I was missing, so I sat down with the same friend I watched the first two movies with and somewhat low expectations for the next few hours of my life. And I was blown out of the water with how bored I was.
The plot of the movie was… passable. It held a lot of very realistic struggles for kids graduating high school and how relationships might be strained by long distance and diverging paths, but how it did this plot was unfortunately boring to me. I don’t remember half of the new characters, and so many of the returning characters were sidelined for Troy and Gabriella's struggles that I couldn’t care less.
Generally, I think the biggest downfall for this movie was just the amount of songs it tried to pack in. Highschool Musical 3 isn’t that much longer than the two previous movies, clocking in at around 2 hours, whereas the first and second ones were 1h38m and 1h51m respectively, but it felt like it went on forever. The sheer quantity of songs it had compared to the other two was jarring when I checked it in retrospect. Highschool Musical 1 had 9 songs, which took up a total of 25m47s of the runtime, or 26.3% of the movie. Highschool Musical 2 had 11 songs which took up a total of 37m55s of the runtime or 32.2% of the movie. Highschool Musical 3 had 13 songs that took up 54m36s of the runtime, or 45.5% of the movie. That is almost half the runtime and it certainly showed. It felt like I was just thrown from song to song with no reprieve or plot between them.
And the songs were just downright boring. I can genuinely only remember two out of the THIRTEEN songs in this movie, and those two are I Want It All and A Night to Remember. These songs stood out to me because they really leaned into the musical of it all. They weren’t afraid to go all out and be big with their costuming, choreography and set design. I genuinely think the sets in A Night to Remember were my favourite sets of the entire trilogy. But two absolute bangers cannot make up for the rest of the songs being boring and mediocre. It felt like the songwriters just had nothing to write about anymore and were trying so hard to just finish this last movie. I especially felt like “Scream” and “The Boys are Back” were the most blatant songs that suffered from this. Neither of which are horrible songs, just unmemorable. Scream felt like they were trying to make another Bet On It, but this time Troy is in a school! Woah so different! And The Boys are Back was just confusing from start to finish, and didn’t really do much in my opinion to show us anything worthwhile about Troy and Chad's relationship. While this argument could definitely be made about many other songs in the trilogy, I felt it stood out here as the song didn’t make up for it by being catchy or interesting.
Almost all the other songs in this movie are Troy and Gabriella singing slow and boring ballads about each other and how in love they are or how emotional they are. Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy their previous songs where they do this, but these songs felt like they dragged and there were so many of them. I cannot remember a single one and they all just sounded the same to me. The songs were so mediocre that I can barely think of anything to say about them. I have the song list pulled up right now and I could not tell you what half of these songs sound like or what happens in them. I can enjoy a good low energy romantic ballad, but these were some of the most mind numbing songs I have heard out of this trilogy.
By the end of the movie, I was just begging for it to be over. I was tired, my friend was tired, and we just wanted it to end. And this is honestly an unfortunate thing for me. I wanted to like this movie, I really did. I went into this movie with a little glowing ball of hope in my chest that I would like the movie, but unfortunately I didn’t. And what hurt the most was the final song.
I am an incredibly sentimental person. I always have been. So when I saw that the final song was called Highschool Musical, I had assumed that I would get teared up, or emotional, or feel anything. But all I felt was empty. These characters who I care about are up there singing to me that I should “hold onto that Highschool Musical” and all I felt was.. Nothing. This disappointed me. I genuinely think that this finale could have held some emotional weight to me if I wasn’t so done with it. If the movie hadn’t been as long or if the songs hadn’t been as boring or annoying as they were.
I don’t want to end this rant on a low note, so I will mention one plot point that genuinely made me feel something. I loved it when both Ryan and Kelsi got scholarships. Kelsi and Ryan were the people I wanted to have the scholarship to Julliard the most (Kelsi more than Ryan because Ryan is rich and didn’t need it.) I was hoping, and begging, that Troy wouldn’t get it. Not because I thought he didn't deserve it but mostly because I didn’t think he would make the best use out of it. While he may love theatre, his final goal is definitely not the fine arts. But Kelsi and Ryan were both so passionate and talented in what they did, I was hoping that one of them would get it. When they announced that Kelsi got the scholarship to Julliard, I turned to my friend and we genuinely squealed and high fived. When they announced again that they were accepting two people for the scholarship I believed that they would give Troy the second one, but when they said Ryan's name, I genuinely leapt out of my seat (along with my friend) and we jumped for joy. I thought that this was a fantastic end to both of their characters, even if they were sidelined for the majority of the series.
I love this trilogy. I don’t care that I didn’t like this movie. I genuinely love these movies. If you don’t agree with what my opinions are about the amount of songs, I would love to hear your thoughts. I would love to be convinced to love this movie. But as of now, I’m disappointed.
If you read all of this, thank you.
