I actually feel rly inspired that it took you 30 years to get where you are?? Like... You kept going for thirty years!!!! That's awesome!!! Need to get me some of that determination!
Yeah but don’t forget the most important part: I like to draw.
It’s not as if cosmic forces told me no. If you like something, you don’t really need to muster a lot of determination because that’s always what you’d rather be doing.
I think the problem for most people is they’re afraid they won’t like drawing if they can’t make something good. And they look everywhere except at themselves for the definition of “good.” It’s a mix of unreasonable expectations combined with a fear of failure. And I think something happens to most people, maybe around age 10, where those two ideas start to take hold, and anything you might have liked about art as a child gets strangled. By whatever gatekeeping we’ve got—sexism, racism, classism, ableism.
Because I don’t know very many kids who don’t love to draw. And they don’t care what it looks like.
I absolutely understand that it’s all very scary, but it breaks my heart how scary it really is because it means we fuck up our kids so bad that they feel they can’t, as grown-ass adults, draw a lopsided orange cow if they want to.
So my determination was never “I’m going to be good even if it takes 30 years.”
If anything, it’s, “Your cow is good too.”

oh hey new guide thinggg~ some basics on how to practice! there’s SO much I could add to this, so it’s just the basics :O
short (kind of): there’s more to practice than doing something repeatedly, it’s also learning new things, problem solving, and honest critique. Each of those is its own skill…also be nice to yourself!

Mr. Greenblatt, I assume you must have seen the official Chowder music video for Lil Nas X's Panini by now, which is a super cool reference to your show. I wanted to ask, what's the most important thing when it comes to pitching a show concept, aside from the usual advice of "Give a concise version of your idea up front"?
Yes, to the dozens and dozens of folks asking if I’ve seen it. Thank you for caring! I do appreciate it.
I would say the most important thing is know if the show you’re pitching is relevant to who you’re pitching it to. Contact their development person and find out what their brand is, what kind of shows they’re either looking for or not looking for. That way you don’t waste anyone’s time. I think also, you need to have made something first or have worked on another show. They tend to want to work with folks that they have an idea of what their sensibility is. No network is going to trust you with a show if they don’t know you and what you’re capable of.

(making a new post so it will actually show up in the tags)
So manialoll and I were listening to this song and we thought it sounded like Cute King from adventure time was singing it, so I made a gif.

2019-08-19: Conquest of Cuteness [53/283]
Everything Burrito 2.0, with help from the Cute King.
This is from my quest to draw a daily piece of pixel art for every episode of Adventure Time. I like the idea that Cute King stayed friends with Finn and Jake, and helped Jake to create a second version of the Everything Burrito to replace the one he buried.
I’m experimenting with style again. This time I limited myself to the NES colour palette (although technically the NES can only display thirteen colours at once and I definitely used more than that).
