Mythology Moodboards, Facts, and Fun
4 posts
I post moodboards and mythology facts and perhaps some fun stuff. I will be doing Gods and Goddesses, both major and minor, Monsters/Creatures, Heroes, and various myths. Request anything you want to get me to do it sooner! Let me know if I get anything wrong, I do my best to research but myths vary widely. My main source will be theoi.com. Ask to tag (I'll do my best). I will be doing mostly greek mythology, but am open to all pantheons and cultures. I will try to be respectful of any cultures represented on my blog and please let me know if I do anything wrong. Bigots of any kind DNI (racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, nbphobic, queerphobic, antisemetic, etc). Main is lilbabygoose.

Zeus’ birth, childhood, and the Titanomachy
Rhea and Cronos had 6 children together: Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon, Hera, and lastly Zeus. These are some of the Olympic gods. Cronos, fearing being overthrown as he overthrew his own father, swallowed the first 5 children at birth.
Rhea, Zeus’ mother, helped him escape the fate of his older siblings by presenting Cronus, Zeus’ Father, with a large rock called the Omphalos, wrapped in cloth, which he readily swallowed in place of his youngest son. He was raised secretly on Mount Dikte in Crete where he was nursed by the goat Amaltheia and was guarded by warrior Curetes who drowned out the sound of his crying with loud battle dances.
When Zeus was grown, either Zeus or Metis (recruited by Zeus) fed Cronus a drink which made him vomit Zeus’ 5 siblings in the opposite order of which they were born. First came Hera, then Poseidon, Demeter, Hades, and lastly Hestia. This started the Titanomachy, a war between these Olympic Gods and the Titans.
With the help of his siblings, Zeus first released the children of Uranus and Gaia from Tartarus: the cyclopes and the hundred-handed ones (Hecatoncheires). The cyclopes forged Zeus’ lightning bolts while the hundred-handed ones slung boulders at the Titans in battle. The majority of Titans allied with Cronus, with multiple notable exceptions including Rhea, the Titaness Themis and in some myths her son Prometheus (in others he is the son of the oceanid Clymene).
When Zeus and the other gods won, they imprisoned those who allied with Cronus in Tartarus with the hundred-handed ones as their guards. The titan Atlas, said to be their leader, was instead ordered to hold up the sky. After the war Zeus and his brothers Poseidon and Hades divided the world into domains and decided who would rule over each domain. Zeus was given the sky and heavens, Poseidon the seas, Hades the underworld, while the land would remain neutral ground.
[Image Description: A moodboard with picture in order- A fresco of Zeus punching a Titan, a fresco of Rhea giving Cronos the Omphalos, A statue of Atlas holding up a round Earth, a vase painting of Atlas holding up the sky, a statue of Amaltheia the goat with baby Zeus and a baby Faun, a fresco of 6 men holding shields (the Curetes), a large rock with a textured pattern- the Omphalos, a vase painting of Rhea giving Cronos the Omphalos, and finally the Cyclopes forging Zeus’ lightning bolts. End ID]
